Book excerpt: The effect of loading rate on the fracture toughness of Types 304 and 316 stainless-steel plate and Type 308 weld before and after thermal aging was characterized using both fracture mechanics and Charpy specimens. Aging at 566°C for 10 000 h reduced static Jc initiation toughness values for both wrought and weld metals by 10 to 20%, and tearing moduli were reduced by 20 to 30%. Under semi-dynamic and dynamic loading conditions, the fracture resistance was not decreased below the static response for either unaged or aged materials. The present results also demonstrated that the large degradation in Charpy V-notch impact energy after aging was not representative of the impact resistance for stainless-steel components containing cracks or crack-life defects. Fractographic examinations revealed that the large loss in Charpy energy was associated with aging-induced microstructural changes that substantially decreased the energy required to initiate a crack from a blunt notch. At very slow strain rates, creep crack growth was found to cause a significant degradation in fracture toughness.

Book excerpt: A review of past studies shows that tests on specimens notched after welding can give overestimates of the fracture toughness that occurs at the tips of flaws present during welding. This situation results from locally intensified straining and ageing embrittlement (LISAE), which has been shown to trigger low stress brittle fractures in both notched and welded wide plate tension tests, and welded structures in service. Although the relative susceptibilities of steels to strain ageing embrittlement are sometimes assessed by testing bulk strained and aged samples, the results of such tests may be optimistic. A summary is given of work to develop a fracture toughness test method for LISAE. The new test will give increased confidence and accuracy in fracture assessments, be of use in selecting tough materials, and aid the development of materials that are resistant to LISAE.

Materials investigated are a commercial 4340 steel, a modified 4330 steel from a gun tube forging having three different heat treatments and two different heats of 250 grade maraging steel. Test specimens utilized are essentially ASTM 'compact tension' type specimens of one inch thickness. Tests were conducted on an open loop, hydraulic, high loading rate tensile testing machine. Results are presented in the form of graphs of fracture toughness versus temperature for the maximum and minimum loading rates ('dynamic' and 'static'). Fracture toughness versus loading rate at -60F and yield strength versus elastic strain rate at room temperature, -60F and -100F for one heat of maraging steel are also reported. (Author).

The results of smooth and notch tensile tests indicated that significant strain aging effects occurred in most high-strength steels in the 300 F to 800 F temperature range and this behavior was analogous to "blue brittleness" in mild steels. Constant load, stress rupture tests were conducted on the steels to determine the possible relationship between strain-aging embrittlement and delayed failure. Only the 300 M steel tested at 400 F exhibited an appreciable degree of delayed failure. This embrittlement, was extremely sensitive to test environment and was elimiriated when tests were conducted in argon. Although strain aging was not a sufficient condition to initiate delayed failure, it appeared to increase the severity of the environmental effects in the particular range where sufficient interstitial mobility existed.

The tests were aimed at characterizing the effects of DSA on the mechanical and fracture behaviors of these steels as well as investigating the synergistic effects of DSA, and radiation defects.

Book excerpt: The effect of interstitial impurities on the upper shelf fracture characteristics of A533B Class 1 steel was examined using single specimen unloading compliance J-integral tests. Three-point bend tests were performed on fatigue precracked side-grooved Charpy-size specimens using a specially designed compression jig that minimized misalignments usually encountered in direct compression tests. Experimental results obtained as a function of the test temperature and strain rate revealed the effect of dynamic strain aging (DSA) as a drop in the critical crack initiation fracture toughness, Jq. As predicted from DSA models, the minimum in Jq shifted to higher temperatures at higher test speeds (strain rates). The kinetics of the toughness minima agreed with the diffusion of carbon or nitrogen, or both in steels. The effect of neutron irradiation was noted to result in a shift of the J-integral minimum to higher temperatures, resulting in an apparent increase in toughness at lower temperatures following neutron radiation exposure. The usual radiation embrittlement was noted at higher temperatures where DSA was absent.
