It is now common to see in elementary school, high school, and university classrooms, not to mention boardrooms and factory floors, a mixture of ethnicities, races, genders, and religious affiliations. But these changes in academic and economic opportunities have not directly translated into an elimination of group disparities in academic performance, career opportunities, and levels of advancement. Standard explanations for these disparities, which are vehemently debated in the scientific community and popular press, range from the view that women and minorities are genetically endowed with inferior abilities to the view that members of these demographic groups are products of environments that frustrate the development of the skills needed for success. Although these explanations differ along a continuum of nature vs. nurture, they share in common a presumption that a large chunk of our population lacks the potential to achieve academic and career success. In contrast to intractable factors like biology or upbringing, the research summarized in this book suggests that factors in one's immediate situation play a critical yet underappreciated role in temporarily suppressing the intellectual performance of women and minorities, creating an illusion of group differences in ability. Research conducted over the course of the last fifteen years suggests the mere existence of cultural stereotypes that assert the intellectual inferiority of these groups creates a threatening intellectual environment for stigmatized individuals - a climate where anything they say or do is interpreted through the lens of low expectations. This stereotype threat can ultimately interfere with intellectual functioning and academic engagement, setting the stage for later differences in educational attainment, career choice, and job advancement.

Book excerpt: Stereotype threat is a phenomenon that members of a group may experience when they feel that they may either conform to, or affirm, a negative stereotype. This study explores whether the presence of stereotype threat regarding women's poor math performance will affect women's actual performance. The experimental group took a math test after reading instructions that included a short report about how women's math performance is typically poorer than males. The control group took the same test after having read instructions with no such report. Participants included 20 female and 27 male students enrolled in a Psychology 101 course at the University at Buffalo. The findings did not strongly support the hypothesis; the ANOVA results on the gender by test version interaction were not statistically significant at the .05 level (F = 1.963, p = .168). The effect size for this comparison was minimal (r 2 = .064).

Book excerpt: The SAGE Handbook of Gender and Psychology is a unique, state-of-the-art synthesis of the known work, combined with current research trends, in the broad field of gender and psychology. In the past 35 years academic publications on the subject have increased tenfold, and this level of activity as well the diversity of research looks set to increase in the coming years too. The time is ideal for a systematic review of the field. Contributions come from academics around the world and many different disciplines, and as a result multiple perspectives and a diversity of methodologies are presented to understand gender and its implications for behaviour. Chapters cover a wide variety of topics, theoretical approaches, contexts, and social issues; they also critically examine the key issues and current debates. Both advanced students and scholars will find extensive range and depth in the topics covered across the Handbook′s 29 chapters. Published as a single volume, the handbook is aimed at individuals as well as the library market. The SAGE Handbook of Gender and Psychology will have mass appeal across the field of psychology, including social psychology and gender and psychology, as well a number of other subject groups such as gender studies, sociology, organizational behaviour and political science.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this investigation was to explore the effects of stereotype threat on women's construction of gender and mathematical identities, and to examine how these various cognitive negotiations may affect their mathematical reasoning on challenging definite integral applications. This was a qualitative study that primarily utilized the episodic narrative interview method. A sample of 20 Calculus II students were given a calculus assessment and a survey regarding the importance of gender and mathematics to their identities. Results of the surveys were used to identify a purposeful sample of four participants to be interviewed. Analysis of the interview transcripts revealed four themes that offer some insight into women's experiences at the intersection of gender, mathematics, and stereotype threat. The findings include evidence that both gender identification and domain identification (the strength with which one identifies with mathematics) influence the effects of stereotype threat. More specifically, women, whose gender is more central to their identity and who care the most about their identities as mathematicians appear to be more vulnerable to the effects of stereotype threat. Findings also support earlier claims that gendered discourse in mathematics harms women's construction of mathematical identities.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Stereotype threat is a psychological predicament that arises when a person fears that an individual underperformance will support the veracity of a negative social group characterization. Research suggests that stereotype threat has important implications for the personal self as well as the collective self, although no study has systematically investigated the role of self-representation as antecedents to stereotype threat. The purpose of the current project was to meet that objective by teasing apart stereotype threat into these components. Study 1 investigated individual differences in chronic collective and personal threats in a situation where explicit performance expectations were removed. Women low in both a chronic personal threat and a chronic collective threat performed better on a difficult math test than women high in both of these chronic threats experienced together or separately. However, chronic collective threat and chronic personal threat were not effectively isolated. To address this limitation, Study 2 replicated Study 1, using an experimental methodology. Study 2 demonstrated that the collective threat and personal threat components of stereotype could indeed be isolated. Women who experienced a collective threat performed better than women who experienced a personal threat with or without a collective threat and women who experienced no threat. Moreover, there was a tendency for women who experienced both threats to perform worse than women who experienced a personal threat and women not threatened suggesting that stereotype threat may be the consequence of the simultaneous experience of a personal threat and a collective threat, that is, a dual threat. Study 3 attempted to provide converging evidence of the dual threat conceptualization of stereotype threat. Women were presented with a task intended to buffer against a personal threat to alleviate the consequences of stereotype threat, and thus replicate Study 2 by showing that collective threat enhances performance. There were no differences among women who received personal threat buffering instructions and those who did not, although, ancillary measures suggest that the intended phenomenology was not achieved. The implications of these findings to the theoretical underpinnings of stereotype threat are discussed.

Book excerpt: Previous research on social facilitation suggested that womens mathematics stereotype threat might be alleviated by components of the test itself (Bond, 1982). To test this hypothesis, in Experiment 1, we primed the stereotype about womens math performance, and then gave men and women a difficult math test. In one condition, the format of the math test was intended to lead participants to believe that their performance was good, and in the other condition, the format of the math test was intended to lead participants to believe their performance was poor. Stereotype threatened women who believed they performed poorly on the test actually performed no worse than stereotype threatened women who thought they performed well. In Experiment 2, we primed the stereotype about womens poor math performance, and then gave the men and women a math test. In one condition, the majority of the math items were relatively easy, with some difficult items embedded. In a second condition, the majority of the math items were difficult, including items that matched those used in the first condition. We found that stereotype threatened women performed better on the matched items embedded in an easy test, than did stereotype threatened women completing the same items embedded in a difficult test. Theoretical and practical implications of the results are discussed.

Book excerpt: This Handbook is a comprehensive and scholarly overview of the latest research on prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination. The Second Edition provides a full update of its highly successful predecessor and features new material on key issues such as political activism, economic polarization, minority stress, same-sex marriage laws, dehumanization, and mental health stigma, in addition to a timely update on how victims respond to discrimination, and additional coverage of gender and race. All chapters are written by eminent researchers who explore topics by presenting an overview of current research and, where appropriate, developing new theory, models, or scales. The volume is clearly structured, with a broad section on cognitive, affective, and neurological processes, and there is inclusion of studies of prejudice based on race, sex, age, sexual orientation, and weight. A concluding section explores the issues involved in reducing prejudice. The Handbook is an essential resource for students, instructors, and researchers in social and personality psychology, and an invaluable reference for academics and professionals in sociology, communication studies, gerontology, nursing, medicine, as well as government and policymakers and social service agencies.
