Book excerpt: This thesis is the first in a series that is attempting to discover the mechanism by which the fracture toughness J sub 1C, of HY-series steel decreases with increasing prestrain at room temperature. This decrease J sub 1C is a function of yield strength and plane strain fracture strain. However, this reduction in J sub 1C is shown to be caused by a reduction in the plane strain fracture strain. Fractographic examinations have verified this reduction in the fracture strain and also have shown that regions of very low ductility exist due to alloy segregation that is present in bands. The mechanism for the degradation in the toughness is believed to be such that stress relieving following prestraining would restore the toughness. (Author).

In this study the effect of prestrain on the J-resistance (J-R) curve of subthickness specimens of HY-100 steel was investigated. Prior to testing, the specimen blanks were subjected to four levels of tensile strain up to 10% prestrain. J-resistance curves were determined for unstrained material using multiple-specimen and single-specimen techniques and for the prestrain material using the single-specimen technique. In all cases a half-thickness, full-width, three-point bend specimen geometry was used. Irregularities in the J-resistance curves were correlated with distinct features on the fracture surfaces. In particular, discontinuities in the J-R curve were correlated with the location of ridges along the crack front. The J-R curves obtained after considering the effect of these discontinuities showed a definite influence of the prestraining: the fracture toughness JIc and tearing modulus T decrease with increasing levels of prestrain, with T being more sensitive to the prestrain level than JIc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of monotonic and cyclic prestrain on fracture toughness properties of 4340 steel, 4335 steel, and 316 stainless steel were investigated. Monotonic prestrain lowered the toughness levels of the JR-curves and J-T diagrams for these three steels, relative to the virgin material. While cyclic prestrain increased the JR and J-T toughness of 4340 and 4335 steels, it decreased that of 316 stainless steel. The effects of monotonic and cyclic prestrain on JR and J-T curves can be rationalized by material strength. Furthermore, the influence of cyclic prestrain was attributed to the cyclic softening or cyclic hardening characteristics of the virgin material. The transition behavior of the 4340 steel was also altered by monotonic and cyclic prestrain. Moreover, material strength appears to provide a rationale to account for the effects of prestrain history on the transition behavior.

Dokouipil's approach for evaluating the JIc value is extended further and the effect of prestrain on rolled mild steel with significant inclusions is studied using this modified approach. Although this method does not give an accurate value of JIc, it is quite effective for a comparative study. While the fracture toughness of annealed and 7% prestrained materials are about the same, the fracture toughness of 3% prestrained material is significantly lower.

Book excerpt: Experimental investigations demonstrate a significant effect of pre-strain on fracture toughness and stable crack growth resistance of a low carbon structural steel. Fracture toughness, Ji for the onset of stable ductile crack growth is decreased to one half with a 9% pre-strain due to cold rolling. The characteristic distance model for ductile crack initiation was applied to analyze parameters affecting the degradation of fracture resistance. The model predicts that value of Ji is given as a linear function of yield strength and ductility of the material. In order to confirm the theoretical prediction, notched round bar tensile tests were performed and ductility under a high triaxial stress state was measured. Critical plastic strain for micro-void coalescence is significantly decreased with increasing pre-strain. Degradation in Ji due to pre-strain can be well explained by the characteristic distance model.

Book excerpt: The effect of loading rates, ranging from 10 to 100,000 ksi square root of (in/sec), and temperatures, ranging from room temperature to -100F, on the plane strain fracture toughness of several high strength alloy steels has been determined. Materials investigated are a commercial 4340 steel, a modified 4330 steel from a gun tube forging having three different heat treatments and two different heats of 250 grade maraging steel. Test specimens utilized are essentially ASTM 'compact tension' type specimens of one inch thickness. Tests were conducted on an open loop, hydraulic, high loading rate tensile testing machine. Results are presented in the form of graphs of fracture toughness versus temperature for the maximum and minimum loading rates ('dynamic' and 'static'). Fracture toughness versus loading rate at -60F and yield strength versus elastic strain rate at room temperature, -60F and -100F for one heat of maraging steel are also reported. (Author).

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 29 (thesis year 1984) a total of 12,637 theses titles from 23 Canadian and 202 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 29 reports theses submitted in 1984, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
