Book excerpt: Students often claim they can study for exams and complete homework assignments effectively while listening to music. However, scores on national achievement tests indicate otherwise. Empirical studies of the effects of lyrical music on reading comprehension are limited and mixed in their findings. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate the effects of lyrical music on the performance of a reading comprehension task in junior high school students. Theories such as personal construct theory and social identity theory formed the basis for the study; concepts such as attention and distraction, self-discipline and self-regulation, and the role of music in adolescent identity development and formation were considered. Three-hundred-thirty-four 7 th and 8th graders completed the reading comprehension subtest of the Gates-MacGinitie Reading Tests, Fourth Edition, under nonmusic conditions and with accompanying music composed of Billboard Magazine's Top Hit Singles. Following the music portion of the test, the students completed a survey to assess their preference for or against listening to music as they study. An Analysis of Variance procedure determined that the reading performance declined significantly when listening to music. A point-biserial correlation illustrated a more pronounced detrimental effect on comprehension for students exhibiting a stronger preference for listening to music while studying. Results are important for furthering student, parent, and educator understanding of the internal and external influences on study habits with the goal of designing, implementing, and evaluating support systems and strategies uniquely tailored to the developmental needs and personal preferences of adolescents.

Book excerpt: "This study examined the effects of preferred popular music, non-preferred popular music, and classical music on college students' reading comprehension abilities. It addressed current shortcomings in the literature by presenting music to participants before rather than during testing and also by attempting to better equalize levels of arousal and mood that might be differentially affected by the various music types. After listening to each of the three music playlists, 33 undergraduate students at Butler University rated their enjoyment of the music, completed a music rating scale, self-reported their mood and arousal, and answered six GRE Reading Comprehension questions. Results showed that participants felt significantly more invigorated and less depressed after their preferred music compared to either non-preferred popular or classical music. While participants enjoyed their preferred music significantly more than the other two music types, my hypothesis that preferred popular music would exert a greater positive influence on reading comprehension than non-preferred popular music (which would, in turn, result in better reading comprehension than classical music) was not supported. Reading comprehension scores across each of the three conditions were almost identical. Thus, the current study provides no evidence that various types of music have differentiated effects on reading comprehension. Instead, results suggest that personal song selections can be utilized to improve individuals' energy levels and mood to a greater extent than either non-preferred popular music or upbeat classical music"--Leaf 3.

Students may score lower on reading comprehension tests when in a music listening condition as compared to studying in silence. This goes against the popular theory of a positive "Mozart Effect" on performance outcomes. Therefore, the purpose of the current study was to examine the effects of different listening conditions on reading comprehension in college students. The current study utilized data from college students to offer insight into the effects of music. Results show that listening to vocal music while doing a reading comprehension task may be especially distracting to students. This study may help to identify effective study habits for students.

Book excerpt: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of listening to music while reading on reading comprehension performance. The participants of this study were made up of 129 eighth grade students. The study was modeled by the randomized posttest-only control group design. A Music Appreciation Test and A Reading Comprehension Test, originally developed by the researcher, were used to determine the students' music preferences and reading comprehension performance, respectively. The results showed that the reading comprehension performance of the students who read the passage with their non-favored non-verbal music, non-favored verbal music, and favored verbal music were significantly poorer than those students who did not listen music while reading the same passage. Importantly, the current results also demonstrated that the reading comprehension performance of the students who listened to their favored instrumental music while reading did not considerably differ from the reading comprehension performance of those who did not listen to music.

Book excerpt: The study investigated the effects of background music on reading comprehension skills of college students. Seventy-one participants read a health related article in one of three conditions: silence, music with lyrics, and music without lyrics. After reading the article, participants completed a demographic questionnaire. Participants in the music conditions completed an additional music questionnaire. To test reading comprehension, participants were asked to answer five multiple choice and five true/false questions pertaining to the reading. It was hypothesized that participants in the silence condition would perform better than participants in the music condition. Results indicated that there were no significant differences among groups.
