Book excerpt: The effect of microstructure on the susceptibility of a high purity Al-6.8% Zn-2.3% Mg alloy to stress-corrosion cracking in an aqueous salt solution (3.5 wt % NaCl) was studied. The results of testing a series of specimens having controlled microstructures and the same yield strength of 40,000 psi indicate that the susceptibility to stress-corrosion is controlled by the type, size, and spacing of the matrix precipitate through the effect of these precipitates on the deformation process. Although the width of the precipitate free zone appears to have no effect on susceptibility, the grain boundary precipitate seems to influence susceptibility in certain cases. Supporting evidence for these observations was obtained by light and electron microscopic examinations of deformed specimens and by fractographic studies. A model is proposed which explains many experimental observations. (Author).

Book excerpt: Matrix and grain boundary features were systematically varied, using appropriate heat treatment, to evaluate their significance in changing the mechanical and stress corrosion properties of 7075 aluminum alloy. Maximum strength is associated with a Guinier-Preston zone matrix. The precipitate-free-zone adjacent to high angle grain boundaries was found to have only a slight effect on yield and tensile strength and a greater influence on hardness. Stress corrosion susceptibility was studied in a chloride ion environment over a 0.7 - 3.5 pH range. Differences in pH-dependent susceptibility associated exclusively with grain boundary structure for material of highest strength were observed. Grain boundary precipitate spacing (inversely related to precipitate density) was found to be of primary importance to susceptibility. The relative importance of crack initiation to the over-all stress corrosion process was also found to be dependent on grain boundary microstructure. These results indicate that improved properties for Al-Mg-Zn type alloys can be attained by a desirable combination of matrix and grain boundary structure. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of magnesium alloys is increasing in a range of applications, and their popularity is growing wherever lightweight materials are needed. This book provides a comprehensive account of the corrosion of magnesium alloys. It covers not only the corrosion performances and mechanisms of Mg alloys in conventional environments, such as sodium chloride solutions, but also looks at their corrosion behaviours in special media, like engine coolants and simulated body fluids. Part one covers fundamentals such as the corrosion electrochemistry, activity and passivity of magnesium and its alloys. Part two then considers the metallurgical effect in relation to the corrosion of magnesium alloys, including the role of micro-structure and earth-rare elements, the corrosion behaviour of magnesium-based bulk metallic glasses, and the corrosion of innovative magnesium alloys. Part three goes on to describe environmental influences on the corrosion of magnesium alloys, such as atmospheric corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, creep and fatigue behaviour, and galvanic corrosion. Finally, part four is concerned with various means of protecting magnesium alloys against corrosion through the use of aluminium electrodeposition, conversion and electrophoretic coatings, and anodisation. With its distinguished editor and team of contributors, this book is an invaluable resource for metallurgists, engineers and designers working with magnesium and its alloys, as well as professionals in the aerospace and automotive industries.

Book excerpt: Studies were undertaken to test a concept of controlling stress-corrosion crack propagation in Al-Zn-Mg alloys through the use of minor alloying additions of elements known to retard hydrogen ion recombination such as Cd, As, Zr and Cr. Results indicated that the concept was invalid since the minor alloying additions themselves exerted a more profound influence on the grain boundary microstructure. Specifically, the microstructural features of grain boundary particle size and interparticle spacing were found to correlate with stress corrosion susceptibility. Auger electron spectroscope studies also revealed a correlation between the concentration of Zn and Mg within the precipitate-free zone and the susceptibility to cracking. Book excerpt: This report deals with the stress-corrosion cracking of aluminum alloys, and it represents an effort by DMIC to expand on the information contained in DMIC Memorandum 202, 'Stress-Corrosion Cracking of Aluminum Alloys', dated February 15, 1965. DMIC Report 228 begins by presenting a comprehensive definition of stress-corrosion cracking. This is followed by sections dealing with (1) the historical development and growth in awareness of the problem, (2) the mechanisms involved, and (3) the theory of stress-corrosion cracking. A section on experimental techniques is presented. These techniques include test methods used to determine the susceptibility of alloys to stress-corrosion cracking, as well as more refined methods of studying the fundamental mechanisms of the problem. Different evaluation methods, applicable to obtaining the different objectives of stress-corrosion testing, are also presented. All of the foregoing serve as background to the sections on stress-corrosion-cracking behavior of aluminum alloys and preventive measures. (Author).

Book excerpt: The stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of high purity Al-Zn-Mg alloys has been studied in terms of the effects on SCC susceptibility of: bulk chemistry, bulk microstructure, oxide film chemistry, and oxide film morphology. For alloys having equivalent solute content (wt. % Zn + wt. % Mg), higher bulk concentrations of magnesium lead to slightly increased susceptibility in acetic-acid-brine solution. Interrupted quenching failed to produce a microstructure exhibiting reduced SCC susceptibility. Preliminary results indicate that an oxide stripping procedure, that removes the magnesium-rich oxide film formed during heat treating, and replaces it with an amorphous alumina film, decreases SCC susceptibility. Porosity in the original castings caused data to be scattered, so new porosity-free materials have been acquired and the oxide film studies will be repeated. (Author).

Book excerpt: "The influence of friction stir processing (FSP), a microstructural modification tool, on the corrosion behavior of Al-Mg, Al-Mg-Sc, Mg-Al-Zn and Mg-Y-RE alloys has been studied. An attempt has been made to establish correlation between processing parameters and the subsequent microstructural evolution especially matrix grain size on the corrosion and stress corrosion properties of the alloys. A relationship between grain size and corrosion rate for Mg-Y-RE alloys was envisaged and power law type behavior was proposed. Ultrafine fine grained (UFG) microstructure showed one order magnitude lower corrosion rate. Grain refinement achieved through different FSP parameters showed lower corrosion currents for Al-Mg alloy as compared to the base alloy. The significant increment in linear polarization resistance of UFG Al-Mg-Sc alloy has been attributed to modification in chemistry and grain refinement. The slow strain rate testing (SSRT) results indicated no stress corrosion susceptibility for FSP Al-Mg alloy. A critical grain size for Al-Mg alloys has been proposed to show optimum general corrosion resistance with no stress corrosion cracking (SCC) susceptibility. AZ31 microstructures showed significant loss of ductility during SSRT in corrosive medium indicating high SCC susceptibilities. The higher SCC resistance of over aged Mg-Y-RE microstructure as compared to under aged and peak aged was attributed to the alteration in microchemistry and precipitate morphology in the matrix"--Abstract, leaf iv.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industrial interest in wrought heat-treatable aluminium-lithium (Al–Li) based alloys dates back to around 1919 in Germany. However the exploitation of these alloys has historically been limited by their mechanical property anisotropy and concerns over their localized corrosion resistance and temperature stability. Recently, in the last ten years, alloy and process development has resulted in alloy compositions and thermomechanical treatments that potentially can overcome these issues. To put these developments in perspective we have reviewed the corrosion characteristics of first, second and third generation alloys with an emphasis on localized corrosion (intergranular and exfoliation) and stress corrosion cracking (SCC). Intergranular corrosion susceptibility of Al–Li–Cu and Al–Li–Cu–Mg alloys increases with copper content, and the depth of attack increases with ageing, i.e. UAPA~30 mm) further analysis of corrosion test results is required.

Tests were conducted by alternate immersion in 3 1/2% NaCl on two lots from two different sources. The silver bearing alloys displayed an increased susceptibility to pitting corrosion and a predominantly transgranular mode of cracking. No significant improvement in stress corrosion behavior was noted with silver addition as measured by time to cracking. (Author).
