Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Book excerpt: The results of an experimental and analytical study of the effects of initial imperfections on the buckling response of thin unstiffened graphite-epoxy cylindrical shells with and without a cutout, and with three different shell-wall laminates, are presented. Results that identify the individual and combined effects of traditional initial geometric shell-wall imperfections, and nontraditional shell-wall thickness variations, shell-end geometric imperfections, and variations in loads applied to the ends of the shells on the shell buckling and nonlinear responses, are included. The shells have been analyzed with a robust nonlinear finite-element analysis code for shells that accurately accounts for these effects on the buckling and nonlinear responses of the shells. The analysis results generally correlate well with the experimental results. The nonlinear analysis results are also compared with the results from a traditional linear bifurcation buckling analysis that is commonly used for shell design. The results suggest that the nonlinear analysis procedure can be used for determining accurate, high-fidelity, design knockdown factors for shell buckling and collapse. A discussion of how this high-fidelity nonlinear analysis procedure can be used to form the basis for a shell analysis and design approach that addresses some of the critical shell-buckling design criteria and design considerations for composite shell structures is included.

Book excerpt: Some recent advances in thin shell buckling theory which tend to explain the discrepancy between experiment and theory are reviewed. The results of a digital computer study to determine the effect of three discrete axisymmetric imperfections on the buckling load of two specific circular cylindrical shells are presented and discussed. The shells were 40 inches long with wall thicknesses of 0.02 inch and radii of five and ten inches. Initial imperfection amplitudes considered were 0.005, 0.01 and 0.02 inch. (Autho).

Book excerpt: The effect of initial geometric imperfections on the buckling and postbuckling behavior of composite cylindrical shells subjected to uniform axial compression is studied in this report. The solution is obtained by employing von Karman-Donnell nonlinear strain-displacement relations and the principle of stationary potential energy. Numerical results are given for various fiber orientations in the three-layer shell consisting of either glass-epoxy or boron-epoxy composites, with different initial imperfections. Results indicate that the boron-epoxy composite shells are less imperfection sensitive than the glass-epoxy composite shells. Isotropic shells are found to be more imperfection sensitive than composite shells. It is noticed that the increase or decrease in the classical buckling load with change in fiber orientation is generally accompanied by a decrease or increase in imperfection sensitivity of the shell.

There are the domes, water and cooling towers, the contain ments in civil engineering, the pressure vessels and pipes in mechanical and nuclear engineering, storage tanks and platform components in marine and offshore engineering, the car bodies in the automobile industry, planes, rockets and space structures in aeronautical engineering, to mention only a few examples of the broad spectrum of application. In addition there is the large applied mechanics group involved in all the computational and experimental work in this area. Thin shells are in a way optimal structures. They play the role of·the "primadonnas" among all kinds of structures. Their performance can be extraordinary, but they can also be very sensitive. The susceptibility to buckling is a typical example. David Bushnell says in his recent review paper entitled "Buckling of Shells - Pitfall for DeSigners": "To the layman buckling is a mysterious, perhaps even awe inspiring phenomenon that transforms objects originally imbued with symmetrical beauty into junk".

Book excerpt: The vibrations of a cylindrical shell with an axisymmetric initial imperfection and axial preload are studied. Small asymmetric harmonic vibrations are superposed on the basic static axisymmetric equilibrium and the frequency of these vibrations is evaluated. The analysis is based on the nonlinear equations of shallow shell theory, and follows closely an earlier stability investigation by Koiter. The study is restricted to initial imperfections similar to an axisymmetric buckling mode of a perfect cylindrical shell and represents a first approximation only. Such imperfections exhibit a strong influence on the frequency of the vibrations. The possible implications of this effect are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth treatment of the study of the stability of engineering structures. Contributions from internationally recognized leaders in the field ensure a wide coverage of engineering disciplines in which structural stability is of importance, in particular the analytical and numerical modelling of structural stability applied to aeronautical, civil, marine and offshore structures. The results from a number of comprehensive experimental test programs are also presented, thus enhancing our understanding of stability phenomena as well as validating the analytical and computational solution schemes presented. A variety of structural materials are investigated with special emphasis on carbon-fibre composites, which are being increasingly utilized in weight-critical structures. Instabilities at the meso- and micro-scales are also discussed. This book will be particularly relevant to professional engineers, graduate students and researchers interested in structural stability./a

Book excerpt: The results of an experimental and numerical study of the effects of initial imperfections on the buckling response and failure of unstiffened thin-walled compression-loaded graphite-epoxy cylindrical shells are presented. The shells considered in the study have six different orthotropic or quasi-isotropic shell-wall laminates and two different shell-radius-to-thickness ratios. The numerical results include the effects of geometric shell-wall mid-surface imperfections, shell-wall thickness variations, local shell-wall ply-gaps associated with the fabrication process, shell-end geometric imperfections, nonuniform end loads, and the effects of elastic boundary conditions. Selected cylinder parameter uncertainties were also considered. Results that illustrate the effects of imperfections and uncertainties on the nonlinear response characteristics, buckling loads and failure the shells are presented. In addition, a common failure analysis is used to predict material failures in the shells.Hilburger, Mark W. and Starnes, James H., Jr.Langley Research CenterBUCKLING; DEFECTS; COMPOSITE MATERIALS; FAILURE ANALYSIS; CYLINDRICAL SHELLS; ISOTROPY; SHELLS (STRUCTURAL FORMS); BOUNDARY CONDITIONS; LOADS (FORCES)
