Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Book excerpt: The vibrations of a cylindrical shell with an axisymmetric initial imperfection and axial preload are studied. Small asymmetric harmonic vibrations are superposed on the basic static axisymmetric equilibrium and the frequency of these vibrations is evaluated. The analysis is based on the nonlinear equations of shallow shell theory, and follows closely an earlier stability investigation by Koiter. The study is restricted to initial imperfections similar to an axisymmetric buckling mode of a perfect cylindrical shell and represents a first approximation only. Such imperfections exhibit a strong influence on the frequency of the vibrations. The possible implications of this effect are discussed. (Author).

Book excerpt: The purpose of the investigation described in this paper is the study of the effect of very small nonaxisymmetric initial deviations from the exact shape upon the deformations and the critical time of a thin-walled circular cylindrical shell which was manufactured with larger initial deviations of an axisymmetric type. The calculations are carried out in a manner similar to that of a recent paper by the senior author. It is assumed that all the deformations are due to nonlinear steady creep governed by Odqvist's law. In consequence of the nonlinearity of the constitutive equation and the use of three terms in the expressions for the deformations and the stresses the trigonometric calculations become so complicated that they must be carried out by means of the high-speed digital computer. For this purpose use is made of the 'REDUCE' program. It is found that in a particular case the critical time of the shell is reduced to about one-half the original value when one adds to the small axially symmetric component of the initial deviations a nonaxisymmetric component which is ten orders of magnitude smaller. The reduction in critical time is represented by a factor of about 1/15 when the amplitudes of the axisymmetric and nonaxisymmetric initial deviations are equal. (Author).

This symposium, one of several on various topics sponsored annually by the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Me chanics (IUTAM), was organized by a Scientific Committee consisting of B. Budiansky (Chairman), A. H. Chilver, W. T. Koiter, and A. S. Vol' mir. Participation was by invitation of the Scientific Committee, and specific lecturers were invited to speak in the areas of experimental research, buckling and post-buckling calculations, post-buckling mode interaction, plasticity and creep effects, dynamic buckling, stochastic problems, and design. A total of 29 lectures were delivered, including a general opening lecture by Professor Koiter, and there were 93 reg istered participants from 16 different countries. Financial support for the symposium was provided by IUTAM, in the form of partial travel support for a number of participants, and also by the National Science Foundation, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the Air Force Office of Scientific Re search, for additional travel support and administrative expenses. Meeting facilities and services were efficiently provided by the Science Center of Harvard University, and administrative support was gen erously provided by the Division of Engineering and Applied Physics of Harvard University. The scientific chairman enjoyed the invaluable assistance of his colleagues Professors J. W. Hutchinson and J. L.

Book excerpt: Some recent advances in thin shell buckling theory which tend to explain the discrepancy between experiment and theory are reviewed. The results of a digital computer study to determine the effect of three discrete axisymmetric imperfections on the buckling load of two specific circular cylindrical shells are presented and discussed. The shells were 40 inches long with wall thicknesses of 0.02 inch and radii of five and ten inches. Initial imperfection amplitudes considered were 0.005, 0.01 and 0.02 inch. (Autho).

Book excerpt: The present theoretical investigation studies the effect of small multilobed initial deviations from the exact shape upon the deformations and the critical time of a thin-walled circular cylindrical shell which was manufactured with initial axisymmetric deformations. To facilitate the analytical work, the actual solid wall of the shell is imagined to be replaced by an equivalent sandwich wall. The general equilibrium equations derived for shallow shells are expressed in terms of the stresses and deviations corresponding to the equivalent sandwich model. The radial displacement as well as the meridional, circumferential and membrane shear stresses are expressed by finite Fourier series for each face of the sandwich model. A closed form solution is found for the multilobed deformation rates and for the critical time as well. A numerical integration of the deformation rates shows, for a given cylinder, that the multilobed creep buckling deformations grow much faster than the axisymmetric. (Modified author abstract).

Book excerpt: The effect of initial geometric imperfections on the buckling and postbuckling behavior of composite cylindrical shells subjected to uniform axial compression is studied in this report. The solution is obtained by employing von Karman-Donnell nonlinear strain-displacement relations and the principle of stationary potential energy. Numerical results are given for various fiber orientations in the three-layer shell consisting of either glass-epoxy or boron-epoxy composites, with different initial imperfections. Results indicate that the boron-epoxy composite shells are less imperfection sensitive than the glass-epoxy composite shells. Isotropic shells are found to be more imperfection sensitive than composite shells. It is noticed that the increase or decrease in the classical buckling load with change in fiber orientation is generally accompanied by a decrease or increase in imperfection sensitivity of the shell.

Book excerpt: Koiter's well-known buckling analysis of cylindrical shells with periodic axisymmetric imperfections yields a solution which is valid for imperfection of different wavelengths and amplitudes. Numerical calculations were carried out to evaluate several of these cases. Of particular interest are imperfections of the wavelength which are larger than the one considered in Koiter's original analysis. In such cases, the validity of the solution may be extended to imperfection amplitudes of a much larger order of magnitude hitherto considered. The numerical results are plotted and tabulated. A rederivation of Koiter's analysis is added in an appendix together with a brief description of the computational method that was used. (Author).
