Book excerpt: Statement of the Problem: Despite its popularity as a denture-base material, poly-methyl methacrylate exhibits inherently low resistance to impact and fatigue failure. This is reflected in the analyses of the prevalence of denture fracture which suggests that prosthesis failure remains an unsolved problem. Consequently, various approaches to improve the physical and mechanical properties of denture-base polymers have been proposed. These include incorporation of solid metal forms and various types of fibers to provide reinforcement to fracture prone areas. In recent years there has been considerable interest in glass fiber reinforcement of polymeric denture resins. Partial fiber reinforcement using glass fiber has been shown to improve the mechanical properties of removable prostheses. However, adequate impregnation of fibers often requires the use of excessive methyl methacrylate monomer which has a deleterious effect on the mechanical properties of the fiber composite material. Purpose: The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of glass fiber polysulphone composite reinforcement on the flexural characteristics of two commonly used denture-base polymers. Materials and methods: Prefabricated E-glass fiber polysulphone composite rods,?? 3mm in diameter, with a continuous, unidirectional, non-silanized fiber concentration of?? 55 vol %, were employed as strengtheners. The reinforcement was incorporated axial to the neutral axis in standardized cylindrical heat polymerizing conventional and high impact resin test specimens 6mm in diameter and 28mm in length. The two reinforced pattern groups (n = 10) were compared with unreinforced resin control groups. A three point loading test was performed in air after storage of the specimens in water at 37ʻC for a period of 8 weeks. The following values were measured : flexural modulus and flexural strength. The obtained data were subjected to relevant statistical analysis. Results: The flexural modulus of the glass fiber polysulphone reinforcement was 14,106 MPa and the flexural strength 546.6 MPa. The flexural modulus of conventional denture-base resin was 1746 MPa, reinforcement increased it to 2328 MPa, and the flexural strength increased from 164 MPa to 209 MPa. The flexural modulus of high impact polymer was 1684 MPa and reinforcement increased it to 2067 MPa. The flexural strength was increased from 171 MPa to 242 MPa with reinforcement. Abstract: Fiber reinforced composites (FRCs) are increasingly used in dentistry with their tooth-matching mechanical, physical and aesthetic properties. The most commonly used FRC products consist of E- or S-glass fibers and methacrylate-based resin matrices. The commonly used methacrylate monomer bis-phenol A glycidyl methacrylate (bis-GMA) has a very high viscosity and possibly leads to a low degree of conversion (DC). In this PhD study, the much less viscous urethane dimethacrylate (UEDMA) was chosen as a replacement for bis-GMA, diluted by hydroxypropyl methacrylate (HPMA) to build up the resin system. This thesis comprises four studies. In study 1, three study groups of 70.6wt%, 49.0wt% and 27.4wt% UEDMA mixed with HPMA in the resin, all reinforced with unidirectional E-glass fibers (42.0vol%), were light-cured for 40 s. The control group had a resin blend of 70.6wt% bis-GMA and 27.4wt% methyl methacrylate (MMA). The prepared specimens were stored dry for 24 h or in deionized water at 37 ℃ for 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. Water sorption up to 40 d and Vickers hardness together with flexural properties after each storage period were investigated. The results suggested that water storage at 37 ℃ induced certain degradation to the mechanical properties of FRC. The group with the highest UEDMA content (70.6wt%) exhibited the lowest 40 d water sorption, the highest hardness and the highest flexural strength and modulus after most storage periods among the UEDMA-containing experimental groups, while the control group had an even better performance in most aspects tested. From study 2 to study 4, the UEDMA content was raised to 70.6wt%, 80.6wt% and 90.6wt%. The three resins, without fiber reinforcement, were tested for the DC after 40 s light-curing and monomer leaching in a 75% ethanol: water solution. Specimens prepared of these three resins reinforced with unidirectional E-glass fibers were tested for 40 d water sorption and mechanical properties (Vickers hardness, flexural properties) after 24 h dry storage, 1 and 3 month deionized-water storage at 37 ℃ and thermal cycling between 5 ℃ and 55 ℃ for 6,000 times. The control group was the same as in study 1. The experimental resins showed higher DC compared to the control resin, while higher UEDMA content was accompanied with lower DC. The resin with highest UEDMA content (90.6wt% UEDMA + 7.4wt% HPMA) exhibited the lowest monomer leaching. The UEDMA-based experimental groups exhibited higher 40 d water sorption than the bis-GMA-based control group. While the group with lowest UEDMA content (70.6wt% UEDMA + 27.4wt% HPMA) showed lowest water sorption among the experimental groups. The bis-GMA-MMA-based FRC specimens showed a superior performance in most tested mechanical properties than the UEDMA-HPMA-based FRCs, and with a higher UEDMA content the mechanical properties were more promising for dental use. Water storage at 37 ℃ might induce some decrease in the mechanical properties, while thermal cycling influenced the mechanical properties in a more complicated way. There is a high potential that a new FRC with adequate chemical and mechanical properties could be developed. Biocompatibility should, however, be carefully arranged in the near future. Book excerpt: Objectives: A new technology has been introduced into the field of dental resin composites that professes to enhance light-curing efficiency. Rapid amplified photopolymerization (RAP) initiator technology has not yet been fully compared with resin composites with conventional initiators such as camphorquinone (CQ). The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast the effects of this novel technology (RAP) on properties of two light-cured resin composites. Flowable (EFQ) and microfilled (ESQ) experimental composites were fabricated and supplied from Tokuyama Dental with (w/RAP) and without RAP (w/o RAP). The flexural strength (MPa) and flexural modulus (MPa) were obtained using a three-point bending apparatus (Sintech Renew 1123, Instron Engineering Corp., Canton, MA). Polymerization stress curves were created using a tensometer (American Dental Association Health Foundation, NIST, Gaithersburg, MD) which were then used to calculate the maximum stress rate. Finally, the degree of conversion was measured using infrared spectroscopy (Jassco FT-IR spectrometer, Model: 4100, Jasco Corporation, Tokyo, Japan). When evaluating the flexural strength, the peak stress for EFQ w/RAP was significantly higher than EFQ w/o RAP (p = 0.0001). This was statistically not significant for the ESQ group, even though ESQ w/RAP did have a higher peak stress then ESQ w/o RAP (p = 0.28). The interaction between resin type and RAP was not significant when evaluating the flexural modulus (p = 0.21). Formulations with RAP had a significantly higher flexural modulus then w/o RAP (p = 0.0001). Experimental resins with RAP had significantly higher maximum stress rates than those w/o RAP when evaluating polymerization stress (p = 0.0001). Finally, groups w/ RAP appeared to have a higher degree of conversion than groups without (p = 0.0057). This study showed that the experimental composites with RAP had greater mechanical properties than those without. Unfortunately, the increase in polymerization stress causes concern clinically due to the chance of leakage at the restoration/tooth interface. One of the main potential disadvantages of this new RAP technology is an increase in the polymerization stress. Deciding if this amount of polymerization stress is clinically acceptable is yet to be accomplished.

Book excerpt: Under compression, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites fail by fiber microbuckling. The compressive strength of CFRP is known to be dependent upon the properties of the matrix and the fiber/matrix interfacial bond. Two-dimensional analytical models can not properly model interfacial stress distributions to address this relationship. An approximate three-dimensional micromechanics model for compressive behavior has therefore been developed and applied to carbon fiber/polysulfone and carbon fiber/polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) composites to predict the composite component responsible for initiating compressive failure, and the dependence of theoretical compressive strength and fracture energy upon interfacial bond strength. Results indicate that interfacial debonding or matrix shear yielding will occur well before fiber fracture and will thus be the initiator of fiber microbuckling instability, underscoring the importance of high interfacial bond strength and environmental resistance for the development of CFRP composite for structural orthopaedic implant applications. Design concepts for maximizing CFRP implant compressive strength and fracture energy are proposed.
