Book excerpt: The purpose of this pretest-posttest control group study was to test the Social Cognitive Theory by comparing the effects of class type, coeducational or single-gender, on physical fitness test performance and attitudes, controlling for previous fitness levels, among sixth-grade male and female physical education students at a Northwest Georgia Middle School. A total of 277 students participated in the newly state-mandated FitnessGram physical fitness test as part of their regular physical education class. The groups then participated in standard physical education lessons for four weeks. Then, in each of the two sixth-grade physical education periods, students were divided among the teachers according to gender, resulting in a female-only group, a male-only group, and a typical coeducational group. Students again participated in the FitnessGram with their newly formed groups. Afterwards, students were given the Physical Fitness Attitudinal Scale to determine their attitudes about physical education and fitness. The data collected were then analyzed by ANCOVA and MANOVA to determine the effect of gender-grouped classes on physical fitness test performance and student attitudes. The data revealed statistically significant differences between participant groups' performances on some but not all parts of the FitnessGram physical fitness assessment. The data did not show a statistically significant difference between student attitudes toward physical fitness with and without single-gender grouping on the Physical Fitness Attitudinal Scale.

A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Book excerpt: Research studies have suggested that students who participate in daily physical activity and who are more physically fit may have improved academic achievement scores. However, pressures on school districts to improve students' academic achievement in core course areas such as math, science, and English have put less emphasis on courses such as physical education. School districts around the country have eliminated and/or have lessened the amount of physical activity students receive during the school day. This study examined the impact of time of physical education and difference in 9th-grade students' math achievement scores in their Algebra course and outcomes on the June 2019 New York State Algebra I Regents Examination. The causal-comparative quantitative study analyzed the mean scores between students who took physical education before or after receiving math instruction in their Algebra course. Further, the interaction effect of students' gender and economic status based on time of physical education was also investigated. The results of the study found that students who participate in physical education before they received instruction in Algebra had statistically significantly higher mean scores in both the course and end of year-standardized test than those students who participated in physical education after receiving math instruction. There were also findings that suggest that gender and economic status are variables in academic achievement based on the time of physical education. This research study provides implications that administrators may consider when structuring the schedule in their districts and ultimately aligning physical education and or physical activity prior to instruction targeted for improvement.

Social-emotional learning programs have been found to have a positive impact on children’s social-emotional health. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of physical education with an embedded social-emotional component on elementary-aged students’ self-management skills and social awareness. Procedures: Two 4th grade elementary classes were used in this experiment. One class, the experimental group, had social-emotional components embedded into six of their physical education classes while the other class, the control group, did not. It was hypothesized that the experimental class receiving a social-emotional component during six physical education classes will increase their social-emotional health more than the control class who will not be receiving a social-emotional component. Each group will improve from preassessment to post-assessment; however, the experimental group’s improvement will be greater. Methods: This experiment used a survey from Panorama Education to collect data on the student’s perceptions of their self-management and social awareness skills. Both the experimental and control group were given a pre-assessment survey before the first class and a post-assessment survey after the last lesson. Results: There was a statistically significant (p=0.04) difference when comparing the experimental and the control group’s post-assessments and their ANOVA interaction (p = 0.01). The experimental group’s post-assessment for social awareness increased more than the control group’s post-assessment. However, there was no effect on self-management. Conclusions and/or recommendations: These findings support the growing research on the importance of SEL programs in schools. Educators can use this information to improve their educational programs.
