Book excerpt: The vibrations of a cylindrical shell with an axisymmetric initial imperfection and axial preload are studied. Small asymmetric harmonic vibrations are superposed on the basic static axisymmetric equilibrium and the frequency of these vibrations is evaluated. The analysis is based on the nonlinear equations of shallow shell theory, and follows closely an earlier stability investigation by Koiter. The study is restricted to initial imperfections similar to an axisymmetric buckling mode of a perfect cylindrical shell and represents a first approximation only. Such imperfections exhibit a strong influence on the frequency of the vibrations. The possible implications of this effect are discussed. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable attention has been devoted in recent years to the use of shell equations for the prediction of the dynamic behavior of thin cylindrical shells as an element in a missile or spacecraft. The complexity involved in the use of the shell equations must be tolerated for problems that require modes having several circumferential waves (e.g., prediction of panel flutter or response to acoustic loading). Moreover the minimum natural frequency usually corresponds to a mode having two or more circumferential waves. For prediction of overall vehicle behavior, however, one is primarily interested in axisymmetric (n = o) and beam-type (n = 1) modes; in these instances the problem can be considerably simplified by considering the cylinder as a bar for n = 0 modes or a compact beam for n = 1 modes. The present paper examines the accuracy of these engineering approximations as compared with exact solutions from Flugge's shell equations and discusses the error in terms of frequency, mode shape, modal forces, and generalized mass. Consideration is given to the effect of shell bending stiffness and the influence of boundary conditions on these parameters. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary aim of this book is to give the reader an insight into the mechanics of vibrations of cylindrical shells, rather than to present him with a method for straightforward eigendata calculations. The contents are laid out phenomenologically. The first chapter conveys an elementary idea on the elastic strain in a thin shell, arising from the so-called membrane theory, the limitations of this theory are assessed with a clear physical interpretation of its drawbacks. The main emphasis of the book lies in the second chapter, where the reader will find a rigorous interpretation of the fundamental aspects of the so-called bending theory of shells. The major part of this chapter is devoted to thin-shell deformation theories. The solution of the exact equations of dynamic equilibrium that can be derived by the underlying linear theory of mathematical elasticity is discussed in the third chapter. The fourth chapter is an extension of the original Slovak version of this book. New research data in the field of vibrations of shell-like structures are presented mainly for layered shells. A simple mathematical approach is used throughout the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Book excerpt: A pair of stiffened cylinders was subjected to external hydrostatic pressure to establish the adequacy of a design procedure for eliminating the effect of end conditions on strength. The cylinders were machined from a thick tube and were identical to those described in TMB Report 1326 except for the size and spacing of the frames and the thickness of the shell at the ends. The cylinders failed by axisymmetric shell yielding in the second full-length bay at identical collapse pressures. Test results indicated that, with these end conditions, the collapse pressure could be increased by 4 percent over that for a similar model in which the first bay length was two thirds of the length of the others, and failure could be shifted away from the ends of the cylinder.
