Book excerpt: Results indicated that the intervention was effective in improving homework completion rates for 100% of study participants. A PND analysis revealed the intervention to be Highly Effective in improving rates of homework completion for 57.14% of the participants (4), and Moderately Effective for the remaining 42.86% of participants (3). All students showed improvements in rates of homework completion, with gains maintained at a four-week follow-up. A PAND analysis of homework completion data revealed a large effect size (Phi=.90, 95%CI), with 95.08% of data non-overlapping with baseline rates. Parent ratings of problematic homework behaviors as reported on the Homework Problems Checklist (HPC) reflected a decrease in problematic homework behaviors from baseline to intervention completion, with improvements maintained at follow-up. Responses to treatment satisfaction questionnaires indicated that participants reported a very high level of satisfaction with all aspects of the program. These results suggest that by offering an interactive and collaborative school-based intervention that directly involves parents, positive behavior change can be accomplished that extends into both the home and school settings.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this multiple case study was to understand parent-teacher communication and its role in motivating students in elementary school. The work was guided by the following central research question and two sub-questions: CRQ) How do parent-teacher relationships motivate students? SQ1) How does a met or not met basic need dictate the motivational outcomes of students? SQ2) How do elementary school students perceive the role of parents and teachers in their motivation to learn? A qualitative research design was used to gather individual experiences and participants’ perspectives. The multiple case study design allowed many participants to share varying perspectives on the issue and collected in-depth descriptions from a cohesive group of participants. The study participants consisted of teachers, parents, and first through sixth grade students. Teacher and parent participants were selected using purposeful sampling via Facebook. Teacher participants completed an interview, student participants completed an interview as well as a word association task, and parent participants completed an interview and participated in a focus group. Content analysis was used to assemble the data, categorizing by highlighting and color-coding information collected, then the data was triangulated across all three participant groups. Findings revealed the need for teachers to implement the use of a number of communication methods with families; the need for a mix of communication, positive and negative along with academic, behavioral, and socio-emotional updates, to be relayed to families on a frequent basis; and the importance of parental follow up from parent-teacher communication. This study showed that employing these strategies in parent-teacher communication will maximize student motivation and improve parental involvement.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to see if there was a positive impact on student achievement when specific parent communication with the school exists. There were low API scores and a lack of meaningful connections between parents, students, and teachers. The research question was, How does customized parent-teacher communication about student learning impact student achievement? Customized communication is a blending of Epstein’s (1995) Type 2 communicating and Type 4 learning at home. To improve student achievement via improving parent-teacher communication, customized communication took the form of a weekly newsletter. The study took place at one high school located in Southern California. Spanish 1 and 2 classes and their parents were part of the study. Before intervention, a chapter test served as a pretest to provide class test averages and revealed similarity among the control and experimental classes. Parents were surveyed to gather the type of desired communication they wanted in a newsletter. Intervention was given in the form of weekly newsletters to two experimental classes using customized communication about student learning. Finally, a chapter test served as a post-test to reveal any changes in class test score averages as a result of customized communication. A quantitative methodology was used. Data were collected and analyzed through student pretest averages, a parent survey, and student post-test averages. Through personal communication, parents expressed positive perceptions of the intervention. However, a t-Test to compare pre and post test averages, revealed that the null hypothesis must be rejected. There was no significant change in test averages as a result of the intervention. This study could be expanded with more time to see if more customized-communication would impact student achievement. It is a study that opens the door to continue communication that parents value.
