Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematics anxiety has kept students from excelling in mathematics. Several methods of instilling confidence have been instituted within the clasroom by countless teachers. However, sturctures of cooperative learning have been described as the best way for students to overcome their mathematics anxiety. The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate how cooperative learning activities within the classroom could dissipate mathematics anxiety. A survey was given to 57 students, assessing their levels of mathematics anxiety. From the initial survey, the data have shown that the majority of students agree they have mathematics anxiety. They are most anxious when waiting to hear a score on a mathematics test or when doing problems that involve fractions. Currently, 39 of the 57 students are undergoing new classroom structures that involve various effective methods of cooperative learning. Some students will not take part in these cooperative learning stuctures, because they will be considered the control group. After six weeks of these cooperative learning structures, the students will receive the same survey which will determine their level of mathematics anxiety. It is predicted that the students who undergo cooperative learning structures in the classroom will have less mathematics anxiety than the control group based on the answers from a post survey.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to determine if sixth-grade students' problem solving skills were improved by means of their experience with a computer-based logical puzzle game designed to increase reasoning skills, and, in turn, problem solving ability. Students worked on this game either in cooperative learning pairs or alone. Baseline and post-experimental problem-solving ability was measured through the administration of a Problem Solving Test; Form A was utilized as a pretest for this purpose, Form B was used as a post-test. Comparisons of problem-solving ability based upon post-test scores (Form B) were made among four groups of students (N = 106): Group 1: Students (n = 26) who worked on the computer-based puzzle game in cooperative learning pairs Group 2: Students (n = 27) who worked on the computer-based puzzle game as individuals Group 3: Students (n = 24) who worked on a computer-based social studies simulation in cooperative learning pairs Group 4: Students (n = 29) who worked on a computer-based social studies simulation as individuals. A t-test comparison of post-test data between all students who worked on the puzzle game and all students who did not work on the puzzle game showed no significant difference between the two groups' problem solving abilities. However, an analysis of variance comparing the means of all four groups showed that the students in Group 1 performed significantly better (F=3.783, p

This book was released on 2013 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this study was twofold. First, the research aimed to determine if academic achievement would be improved by working in groups versus working individually. To accomplish this goal, the researcher compared three chapter exam scores between the traditional and cooperative classes. Secondly, the study was also designed to collect the students' attitudes toward mathematics in general and cooperative learning in specific. Quantitative data was collected through grade scores and a likert scale survey. Student achievement was analyzed by comparing changes in the mean tests scores and their respective 95% confidence intervals between the traditional and cooperative groups. Students' attitudes toward math were captured through a 4-point scale Likert survey. Qualitative data was based on an open-ended survey regarding students' attitudes regarding cooperative learning. Quantitative data did not reveal any difference between the traditional and cooperative classes. Qualitative data showed that students prefer to work in groups rather than individually.
