Book excerpt: This book puts forward the concept of the Diameter-Transformed Fluidized Bed (DTFB): a fluidized bed characterized by the coexistence of multiple flow regimes and reaction zones, achieved by transforming the bed into several sections of different diameters. It reviews fundamental aspects, including computational fluid dynamics simulations and industrial practices in connection with DTFB. In particular, it highlights an example concerning the development of maximizing iso-paraffins (MIP) reactors for regulating complex, fluid catalytic cracking reactions in petroleum refineries. The book is a must-have for understanding how academic and industrial researchers are now collaborating in order to develop novel catalytic processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the late 1970s there has been an explosion of industrial and academic interest in circulating fluidized beds. In part, the attention has arisen due to the environmental advantages associated with CFB (circulating . fluidized bed) combustion systems, the incorporation of riser reactors employing cir culating fluidized bed technology in petroleum refineries for fluid catalytic cracking and, to a lesser extent, the successes of CFB technology for calcina tion reactions and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. In part, it was also the case that too much attention had been devoted to bubbling fluidized beds and it was time to move on to more complex and more advantageous regime,S of operation. Since 1980 a number of CFB processes have been commercialized. There have been five successful International Circulating Fluidized Bed Confer ences beginning in 1985, the most recent taking place in Beijing in May 1996. In addition, we have witnessed a host of other papers on CFB funda mentals and applications in journals and other archival publications. There have also been several review papers and books on specific CFB topics. However, there has been no comprehensive book reviewing the field and attempting to provide an overview of both fundamentals and applications. The purpose of this book is to fill this vacuum.

Book excerpt: Useful as a reference for engineers in industry and as an advanced level text for graduate engineering students, Multiphase Flow and Fluidization takes the reader beyond the theoretical to demonstrate how multiphase flow equations can be used to provide applied, practical, predictive solutions to industrial fluidization problems. Written to help advance progress in the emerging science of multiphase flow, this book begins with the development of the conservation laws and moves on through kinetic theory, clarifying many physical concepts (such as particulate viscosity and solids pressure) and introducing the new dependent variable--the volume fraction of the dispersed phase. Exercises at the end of each chapterare provided for further study and lead into applications not covered in the text itself. Treats fluidization as a branch of transport phenomena Demonstrates how to do transient, multidimensional simulation of multiphase processes The first book to apply kinetic theory to flow of particulates Is the only book to discuss numerical stability of multiphase equations and whether or not such equations are well-posed Explains the origin of bubbles and the concept of critical granular flow Presents clearly written exercises at the end of each chapter to facilitate understanding and further study

Book excerpt: The development of a continuous method for determining changes in particle size and particle size distribution in fluid-bed systems has been studied experimentally. Differential pressure measurements were employed to study the effects of solid particle size on the behavior of gas-fluidized beds. The relevant bed properties are briefly described and a review given of previous work on the study of fluidized-bed quality. It is shown that, within certain limitations, measurements of bed quality can be used to indicate changes in particle size. Gas-bubble velocities, while increasing in proportion to the square root of bubble diameter, are also shown to be dependent on particle size, increasing as the particle size decreases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Circulating Fluidized Beds (CFB's) offer many advantages over traditional pulverized coal burners in the power generation industry. They operate at lower temperatures, have better environmental emissions and better fuel flexibility. The motion of solids inside a CFB has been studied extensively over the previous twenty years. However the motion of gas is less well understood. There has previously only been indirect measurements of gas velocities and fluctuations. The gas phase is important as the motion of the particles is controlled by the gas. Accurate simulations of CFB's are not possible without accurate information on the gas phase. Instrumentation was developed for use in measuring gas phase fluctuations inside a scale model CFB. Results were unexpected in that gas fluctuations were substantially larger than expected. The fluctuation level without particle flow was around 0.15m/s. This was expected to stay constant or decrease with the introduction of particles. However with particle introduction the fluctuation level increased to 0.7m/s, an increase of over 400%. This is more than likely due to the clustering of particles which produces large scale structures with the resulting vortex shedding. A smaller riser was built which allowed the introduction of single individual clusters into the unit. The effect of single clusters on the surrounding gas flow was studied and modeled. These results indicate a mechanism by which, previously unknown, large scale fluctuations are generated inside a CFB.

The text contains various studies, facts, and discussions on fluidized beds. The book begins by going through the rise and fall of circulating systems, specifically fluid dynamics. The chapter continues with a wider discussion of hydrodynamics, which includes its scales, particles, and different math formulas. In the several chapters that follow, a thorough study of fluidized beds and its subtopics are presented, which include particle behavior, combustion, heat transfer process, reactors, gas mixing, parameters, measurements, and characteristics. The variations of fluidized beds, including the multisolid, dual-column, and turbulent, are also given. The book serves as a very useful reference for undergraduates and postgraduates of physics, chemistry, and other related fields.

Book excerpt: The general purpose of the experimental investigations described here has to study the hydrodynamic properties of gas-liquid fluidized beds. Gas -liquid fluidization of or three-phase fluidization is a chemical engineering operation where all the three phases are brought into contact with each other. This contact is brought about by passing the gas and liquid trough the bed of solids. The solids are said to be in a fluidized state when they are suspended in the continuous phase.Hydrodynamic properties such as gas hold-up, liquid hold-up and bed porosity have been studied. These properties depend upon certain independent variables such as gas flow rates, liquid flow rate, particle size, static bed heights, gas density, liquid density, solid density, liquid surface tension, liquid viscosity, gas viscosity and particle shape. During the course of this experimental investigation only four of these parameters have been varied, viz, gas flow rates, liquid flow rates, static bed height and particle size. The result of these experimental investigations is discussed and correlations have also been developed for the hydrodynamics properties studied.

Since the motion of "bubbles" is an important influence on fluidized bed heat transfer, a better understanding of their behavior is necessary for improving the design of fluidized bed boilers. Using a two-dimensional bed, silica sand particles were fluidized with air at room conditions. The bubbling bed was videotaped, and both qualitative and quantitative information were gathered. Bubble characteristics such as size, rise velocity and frequency were studied while particle size and superficial gas velocity were varied. Results were compared with some existing theories and other similar research. The effect of internal surfaces at several heights in the bed was also studied. General bubble behavior agreed well with descriptions from previous research, and the expected spherical-cap bubble shape was observed. Both bubble size and rise velocity increased with particle size and with fluid velocity. Bubble frequency increased with fluid velocity, but decreased with increasing particle size and height in the bed. These results agree with previous work done using optical probes to measure bubble characteristics. Comparisons of data with empirical models showed general agreement. The presence of internal surfaces had the effect of reducing the bubble size, rise velocity, and frequency, and also of reducing the influence of changing particle size and superficial velocity on the bed behavior.

Book excerpt: An in-depth experimental study of the fluid dynamics of turbulent fluidized beds with particles of Geldart’s Group B was carried out. For this purpose, fluidization behavior was investigated in different fluidized bed plants having diameters in the range of 0.05 m to 1 m. Pressure fluctuation analysis has been used as an identification tool for the turbulent fluidized bed regime. Different fluidization conditions have been investigated by variation of the fluidized bed properties, the bed material properties, and the gas properties. Based on the measured data, a correlation predicting the transition velocity from bubbling to turbulent fluidization is introduced. To investigate the local flow structure, capacitance probe measurements have been carried out. Using this measurement technique, local solids concentrations and properties of rising bubbles have been determined and analyzed. Finally, an empiric fluid dynamic model was developed using the local measurement data. It is mainly based on capacitance probe measurements and shows high accuracy in comparison to pressure data.

Book excerpt: A fluidization model was developed by adopting the transport equations of the gas and solid phases and the constitutive relations for the solid phase derived by Ding [1]. Finite difference method was used for the numerical solution of the set of partial differential equations governing the gas solid two-phase flow. The develop model has the capability of treating a variety of boundary and initial conditions. The model was applied for the simulation of bubbling fluidization with a rectangular obstacle over a central jet and uniform gas distribution system a in a two-dimensional bed. The model was also applied for the computation of circulating fluidized (CFB) and to observe the effect of particle inelasticity on the hydrodynamics of CFB.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research involves a numerical study of the hydrodynamics of gas fluidized beds. We use the continuum model, treating both gas and particles as interpenetrating continua. The motion of gas and particles is strongly coupled by the interactions between them. For simplicity, we only consider drag forces. We use MacCormack's numerical method to solve the hyperbolic like equations and successive error vector propagation method or a marching tridiagonal method to solve the elliptic equation for pressure, depending on the situation considered (i.e. boundary conditions and geometry). In order to understand the basic phenomena, we consider the propagation of a finite disturbance of sine wave shape in one dimension. The disturbance grows in amplitude and forms a voidage shock. Next, the two dimensional case is analyzed, starting from the uniform fluidization condition. A jet is introduced at the bottom and the formation of a bubble and its motion is observed. Additionally, we introduce a bubble inside the bed and observe its effect on bed hydrodynamics. We then calculate the rise velocity of the bubble and find that it compares well with empirical correlations. We also consider the two dimensional case with a rectangular obstacle. The initial condition is calculated using D'Arcy's law. We observe the particle packing on the top and the local expansion phenomenon under the obstacle as well as the interaction of a rising bubble. The numerical results for this case agree qualitatively with experimental observations reported by others.

Book excerpt: Fluidization refers to a process by which a fluid like state is imparted to granular solid particles by the passing of a fluid upwards through the bed of particles. A semi fluidized bed is characterized by a fluidized bed and a packed bed in a series within a single contacting vessel. Gas-liquid-solid semi fluidization is defined as an operation in which a bed of solid particles is suspended in gas and/or liquid upward flowing media due to the net gravitational force on the particles and the motion of the particles is restricted by a top restraint. Such an operation generates intimate contact between the gas, liquid and solid particles in these systems and provides substantial advantages for applications in physical, Chemical and biochemical processing involving gas, liquid and solid phases. The experiments were conducted using liquid as the continuous phase and gas as the discontinuous phase. In this work air, water and dolomite (2.31mm, and 1.7mm) are used as the gas, liquid and solid phases respectively. The experiments were carried out in a 100 mm ID of 2m height vertical Plexiglas column. Knowledge of minimum liquid semi fluidization velocity is essential for the successful operation of gas-liquid-solid semi fluidized beds. Bed pressure measurements have been made to predict the values of the minimum liquid semi fluidization velocity. In the present work, hydrodynamic characteristics viz., the pressure drop, bed expansion of a co-current gas-liquid-solid semi fluidized bed has been studied. These have done in order to develop a good understanding of each of the flow regime in gas-liquid and liquid-solid semi fluidization. The effect of static bed height, particle size, liquid velocity and gas velocity on hydrodynamics parameters like minimum semi fluidization velocity, pressure drop, expansion ratio have been investigated. Experimental study based on statistical design has been made to investigate the expansion ratio of semi fluidized bed. The experimental val.
