Book excerpt: The effect of austenitizing conditions on the anisotropic embrittlement of electroslag remelted (ESR) 4340 steel were studied. Increasing austenitzing of temperature from 1550 F to 1750 F had little or no effect on the strength and toughness of ESR melted 4340 steel. Decreasing the quench rate from 1000 F per minute to 500 F per minute had no effect on the strength and toughness. Decreasing the quench rate from 500 F per minute to 100 F per minute had a significant effect on Charpy V-notch toughness. Lower Charpy V-notch toughness associated with the quench rate of 100 F per minute was due to the presence of bainite in the microstructure. The presence of bainite had a small effect on a slow blend fracture toughness. Plate anisotropy was very small in the plane of the plate (longitudinal versus transverse). Properties normal to the plane of the plate were affected drastically. Charpy V-notch toughness was decreased as much as 56% over the values obtained in the longitudinal direction. Reduction in area of the mild notch tensile specimen was decreased as much as 64% in the through-thickness direction when compared to the longitudinal direction. Inclusion clusters were primarily alumina with some calcium present. In all the tests conducted, there was no evidence for anisotropic embrittlement of this material (i.e., intergranular fracture).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ESR 4340 steel forgings tempered to a hardness of HRC 55 exhibit a severe loss of tensile ductility in the short transverse direction which is strain-rate and humidity dependent. The anisotropy is also reflected in blunt-notch Charpy impact energy, but is absent in the sharp-crack fracture toughness. Brittle behavior is associated with regions of smooth intergranular fracture which are aligned with microstructural banding. Scanning Auger microprobe analysis indicates some intergranular segregation of phosphorus and sulfur in these regions. The anisotropic embrittlement is attributed to an interaction of nonequilibrium segregation on solidification with local equilibrium segregation at grain boundaries during austenitizing. This produces defective regions of enhanced intergranular impurity segregation which are oriented during forging. The regions are prone to brittle fracture under impact conditions and abnormal sensitivity to environmental attack during low strain-rate deformation. A relatively sparse distribution of these defects (100 per cu. in.) accounts for the discrepancy between smooth bar and blunt-notch tests versus sharp-crack tests. Isotropic properties are restored by homogenization treatment. For application of these steels at extreme hardness levels, homogenization treatment is essential. (Author).

Book excerpt: This report addresses a mechanical property characterization of a split argon-oxygen decarburized (AOD) heat of 4340 steel which was further processed by vacuum arc remelting (VAR) and electroslag remelting (ESR) into 12.7 cm (5 inch) square forgings. Properties examined were hardness, tensile, Charpy V-notch impact, and fracture toughness as a function of tempering temperature over the range of 163 C (325 F) to 649 C (1200 F) for both the longitudinal and transverse orientations. Microstructural aspects are also addressed.

Paton Electric Welding Institute in Kiev, one of the pre-eminent institutes of the USSR. The Paton Institute, internationally famous for its entrepreneurial efforts in electrical welding processes, is also famous for its application of electrically based processes in melting and remelting of high alloy and high-temperature materials. These include the ESR (electroslag re melting) process, the ESC (electroslag casting) process, skull remelting based on electron-beam processes, plasma arc processes, and electric arc processes. Along with the ESR process for ingot production is the commercial plasma arc remelt process for specialty steels, particularly where high nitrogen contents may be desired, as in austenitic stainless steels. Major industrial centers are now scattered throughout the USSR and are a major factor in high-alloy, high strength, low- and high-temperature materials. The ESR process was developed in response to the Western development of the VAR (vacuum arc remelting) process for producing very highly alloyed materials during the growth period of the jet engine age. The V AR and ESR processes utilize different purification and refinement processes that are extremely critical in very highly, complexly alloyed superalloys and high-speed tool steels. In water-cooled remelt systems, they also achieve relatively rapid (directional) solidification, minimizing segregation and coarse phase separation of undesir able impurity elements or elements that tend to form coarse brittle phases.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rate of growth of stainless steel has outpaced that of other metals and alloys, and by 2010 may surpass aluminum as the second most widely used metal after carbon steel. The 2007 world production of stainless steel was approximately 30,000,000 tons and has nearly doubled in the last ten years. This growth is occurring at the same time that the production of stainless steel continues to become more consolidated. One result of this is a more widespread need to understand stainless steel with fewer resources to provide that information. The concurrent technical evolution in stainless steel and increasing volatility of raw material prices has made it more important for the engineers and designers who use stainless steel to make sound technical judgments about which stainless steels to use and how to use them.
