Book excerpt: Many studies have been done on the shear bond strength of brackets adhered to acid-etched enamel and so far, there is no study on shear bond strength of brackets adhere to laser-etched enamel in Iraq. So, this study is an attempt to compare the shear bond strength of brackets adhered to laser-etched enamel with that of brackets adhered to acid-etched enamel. The application of laser irradiation to etch dental enamel for direct bonding of orthodontic appliance has been studied. CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) laser are capable of producing surface irregularities in human enamel which resemble those resulting from etching of enamel with ortho-phosphoric acid. Whether laser conditioning improves the retention of composite resins to the same degree as conventional acid-etching techniques has been the subject of several investigations.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Light cured composite resin can be time consuming for bonding orthodontic brackets. A new Blue light diode laser may reduce curing times for composite resins. Hypothesis: The laser will achieve similar bond strengths in half the time and at greater distances as the LED. Methods: 90 extracted premolars will be bonded and cured using Laser and LED curing units at varying times, another 120 extracted premolars will be bonded and cured at varying distances. An Instron machine will be used to test shear bond strength. Results: The laser was not able to achieve similar bond strengths as the LED curing light in half of the curing time. At 5 seconds, the laser had 35% lower bond strengths but was still in the clinically acceptable range. The laser achieved similar bond strengths when the curing tip was at greater distances as when it was close to the bracket-adhesive-tooth interface.
