Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to explore how social support is related to the overall well-being of college students. Literature suggests social support buffers a negative effect of distress on academic performance. This study attempts to provide practical information for a program called Student Opportunities, Advocacy, and Resources (SOAR) at Abilene Christian University (ACU), which assists students and connects them to resources available to support their path to success. A multiple linear regression was conducted to examine the association between anxiety, depression, social support, and academic performance using a sample of 93 students enrolled in this program in Fall of 2016. Some findings were not congruent with the literature. Although social support had a significant moderating effect, it did not necessarily buffer the negative influence of depression on academic performance. Surprisingly, among the group who reported having low social support, depression had a positive relationship with academic performance. After eliminating an insignificant moderating effect of social support on the relationship between anxiety and academic performance, the total effect of anxiety on academic performance was not significant. The findings show gender was the strongest predictor; females performed higher than males. Past academic performance had a positive effect on current academic performance. The implication of the findings is not to disregard mental health issues; rather, it is possible that these students are more difficult to reach due to less visible symptoms and/or succeeding academically. Knowing that this population could be silently suffering makes it imperative for college campuses to implement programs such as SOAR that reaches out to students who may not seek support or show signs that they are experiencing difficulties due to various stressors during this developmental transition. Considering limitations of this study, further investigation is needed to validate these findings.

These new life changes can give rise to factors that contribute to signs of anxiety and depression. A report of data from 2016 to 2017 revealed that the top five reported issues among over 150,000 surveyed college students were anxiety (62.2%), depression (49.7%), stress (45.5%), family (30.1%), and academic performance (26.8%) (Newhart et al., 2019). Of these issues, research has looked into identifying the causal factors of mental health strains on students. I took a different approach, and I aimed to correlate levels of depression and anxiety with specific class standing in college. The survey attempted to determine whether depression and anxiety increase or decrease throughout the four years of an undergraduate program, as well as analyzed potential differences between men, women, and transfer students. This survey also examined the effect that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on depression and anxiety in college students. I conducted this survey with the expectation that depression and anxiety decrease when progressing through college, with the highest levels of these disorders occurring among first-year participants. In addition, females and transfer students will report higher levels of depression and anxiety. Lastly, I expected students to report a significant change in symptoms of depression and anxiety after the COVID-19 pandemic began. Based on the results, I identified potential causal factors and methods of treatment determined by previous research in an attempt to bring awareness to these two mental health disorders. Due to the transition to college that first year students experience compared to the stress that comes with preparing for a professional career at one’s fourth year, it is important to note the prevalence of these two disorders across class years.

Book excerpt: Increasing numbers of community college students self-identify as having mental health issues, which negatively impact their academic performance. This study explored the relationship between mental health conditions and academic performance; the relationship between mental health conditions and physical and emotional well-being; and the impact of mental health interventions. The research setting was a large, urban, public community college in the San Francisco Bay Area with an annual enrollment of 19,000 students. Data from the ACHA-NCHA II survey, conducted in 2013, 2016, and 2018, were examined with a total of 2,562 full-time and part-time students. Chi-Square Test of Independence, ordinal logistic regression, and logistic regression were used to analyze the data. The results indicated that there is a statistically significant relationship between anxiety, depression, and stress and academic performance and on student well-being and overall health as well. Additionally, there is a statistically significant relationship between students' well-being, academic performance, mental health conditions, and counseling participation in the college's mental health center. The results were reviewed for differences between students' ethnicity, gender, and age. This study revealed that, while students of color experience mental health conditions at similar rates as White students, they are less likely to seek treatment. Moreover, students of color are more likely to experience basic need insecurity, healthcare disparities, institutionalized racism, and the stigma associated with struggling with impaired mental health. Recommendations include implementing a mental health equity framework, increased outreach efforts to reduce stigma, and creating an inclusive and supportive campus climate for students of color.

Student mental health problems are strong negative predictors of academic outcomes (Khubchandani et al., 2016). The main goal of this prospective study is to test the effects of depression on student academic success and adjustment.The representative sample of 492 undergraduate students (60% females) from various study programmes completed Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (SACQ, Baker & Siryk, 1999) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II, Beck, Steer & Brown, 2011) and are followed during three academic years. Academic achievement was measured by cumulative grade point average (GPA), number of academic credit points (ECTS) and student efficacy status after 3 years (finishing undergraduate study on time, repeating a year, dropped-out).The results showed that 23% of all the freshmen have increased level of depressive symptoms (26% of students who stayed at home and 17% of those who changed residence). The level of depressive symptoms was not correlated with GPA, but it was negatively correlated with the number of ECTS achieved at the 3rd year, indicating poor efficiency of depressed students. The students who dropped-out from college do not differ from those who stayed in their initial level of depression, but they have increased level of depressive symptoms on the second year. A significantly higher percentage of students with a high level of depression dropped out from college or repeated a year, comparing to those with a low level of depressive symptoms. The students with more depressive symptoms also had worse academic, emotional and social adjustment at the beginning and during their study. We can conclude that students with a higher level of depressive symptoms are more prone to poor academic efficiency and higher drop-out, as well as low adjustment to college. It is important to early detect students with increased level of depressive symptoms and help them cope and facilitate their succesful study.

Results: Researchers found that students who reported having a high GPA correlated with feeling less anxious. Students' anxiety regarding their GPA has no relationship; however, students' satisfaction regarding their GPA had a relationship to the students' overall academic satisfaction. Discussion and Implications: The findings reported indicated students had more anxiety when it came to how satisfied they were with their GPA. Social workers need to find creative and effective ways to support students that can contribute to their success.

Book excerpt: The post-secondary educational environment is full of demands both academically and outside of the direct college setting and as a result, stress is a prevailing concern for college students. Chronic, high levels of stress have been linked to a number of negative health outcomes, such as anxiety and depression, and academic outcomes, such as lower academic achievement. Using a diverse sample of undergraduate and masters students [n=84; mean (SD) age = 22.89 (5.99) years] from an urban, public college, the current study measured students experiences of stress (Perceived Stress Scale) and the adaptive and maladaptive strategies they utilized to cope with stress, including mindfulness (Mindful Attention Awareness Scale), physical activity (International Physical Activity Questionnaire Short Form), and substance use (Rutgers Collegiate Substance Abuse Screening Test). This study then assessed whether these experiences differed for students who were achieving highly (as measured by semester-end GPA) and whether stress predicted anxiety (Beck Anxiety Inventory) and depression (Beck Depression Inventory-II). Participants completed three surveys at the beginning, middle, and end of the academic semester. Participants experienced chronic, high levels of stress and a substantial minority experienced moderate to severe levels of anxiety and depression. Experiences of stress did not differ as a function of academic achievement. Few students expressed problem substance use and most engaged in moderate to high levels of physical activity. There is preliminary evidence to suggest that changes in stress and mindfulness were predictive of changes in anxiety and depression. These results suggest that promoting mindfulness and physical activity as interventions in college settings may be beneficial to buffer the effects of stress on anxiety and depression. Future studies delineating the sources of stress and their relation to coping strategies may help to better identify those most likely to benefit from these strategies. Furthermore, HEALTH, WELLBEING, & ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT viii assessing concurrent coping strategies specifically associated with academics would help to further clarify the role of mindfulness and physical activity as adaptive coping mechanisms. An individual’s perceptions of social support can be influenced by friends, family, and significant others. Another possible influence in the perception of social support and resilience is race/ethnicity. Social support especially has been viewed differently based on culture. The purpose of this study was to examine the links between resilience, social support, academic success, mental health, and race/ethnicity. The results showed that resilience significantly predicted both stress and depression but failed to predict anxiety. Also, resilience was a mediator in the relationship between depression and academic performance. This study was limited in the scope of participants both in number and location. Future research should focus on further examination of resilience and its connection to academic success, as well as interventions to improve it.

In particular for young adult students, anxiety and depression symptoms could interfere in their academic performance. In this chapter, we reviewed approaches to the study of anxiety and depression symptoms related with the academic performance in adolescent and graduate students. Results from available published studies in academic journals are reviewed to discuss the importance to detect information about academic performance, which leads to discover in many cases the very commonly subdiagnosed psychiatric disorders in adolescents, that is, anxiety and depression. With the reviewed evidence of how anxiety and depression in young adult students may alter their main activity in life (studying and academic performance), we discussed data in order to show a way in which professionals involved in schools could support students and stablish a routine of intervention in any case.

Unfortunately, only 10% of college students who indicated they would benefit from mental health services stated that they received care. Tiered, social emotional programming may be an upstream approach to address this public health crisis. A preventive mental health course offered at a large, four-year, public university teaches students skills related to mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, and cognitive restructuring which may reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, while equipping students with skills to respond to future stressors more effectively. Study participants included undergraduate students (35.4% = White, 2.2% = Black, 0.4% = American Indian, 47.8% = Asian, 8.4% = Latinx; 24.3% = Male, 74.8% = Female). Participants were 18-39 years old (M = 18). Student symptoms of anxiety and depression were measured utilizing indices obtained from the Brief-Symptom Inventory (BSI-18) while student attitudes about stress were measured using the Stress Mindset Measure (SMM). Multiple linear regression models with sequential predictor entry were used to determine the unique effect of student pre-intervention internalizing symptom levels on change in psychopathology after controlling for the interaction effects among student demographic factors. Results suggest higher pre-intervention levels of anxiety moderately predicted decreases in anxiety levels, while higher pre-intervention levels of depression moderately predicted decreases in depression levels among this general college student population. Stress mindset significantly interacted with pre-intervention levels of anxiety on depression symptom change. The following study extends the literature on social-emotional learning programming into the higher education context and by responding to this alarming public health crisis from a solution-focused prospective.

This study furthers the knowledge of depression in college students and its association with academic performance by examining the influences of race/ethnicity, financial problems, and substance use on the association. Correlation and regression analysis were performed on data from the cross-sectional National College Health Assessment (NCHA) collected on the UNC Charlotte campus. The results suggest a non-linear relationship between depressive symptoms and cumulative grade point average: students with the second lowest level of depressive symptoms have the highest odds of having a C, D, or F cumulative grade average. Year in school, race/ethnicity, cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, other drugs, and debt level emerged as confounders of the association between depressive symptoms and academic performance. These results indicate that depressive symptoms alone do not explain lower grades and that college students could benefit from education on the academic effects of depression, substance abuse, and debt. Students who are mildly depressed may be most at risk for the detrimental effects of depression. Therefore, required depression screening programs also could be beneficial to college students.
