Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Our Girls The problems Which are discussed in these pages are among the most important With Which the educationist, in theory and in prae tice, is called to deal. While it is universally acknowledged that the education of women should be as perfect as possible and should therefore be shaped in accordance With actual needs and based on the most improved meth ods, it is not so clear just how this education is to be imparted in such a way as to bring out in their full value and beauty the special en dowments of woman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Girls in the United States In order to fit myself for this work, I devoted some time to a course of reading in American educational literature. This is abundant, and while travelling in America, I was able, through the kindness of the various school and college authorities, to form a somewhat wide collection of books and pamphlets dealing with the various aspects of the question; a bibliography of these and other works read is given below. I have thus been able, to some extent, to understand the aims of Amuioan educators, and check the observations I made in the schools themselves. I have also quoted from reports and other writings of Americans in order to put their views before English readers. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Renaissance of Girls Education in England: A Record of Fifty Years Progress To all whom it may interest I dedicate this brief summary of the events which have wrought a peace ful revolution among us during the last fifty years. Among the many changes of the half-century, the great transformation in the education of women surely deserves a record. The workers have been many, the help given of various kinds, yet no event is isolated, for all are links in one chain of progress. Fifty years ago a few far-sighted men and women gave the impetus; we who harvest where they sowed may like to be reminded, in this season of retrospects, of the great debt we owe them. What has touched the lives of so many women is the concern of all, and though I shall be proud indeed if my book prove welcome to teachers, I should wish most of all to address myself to that Old and long-tried friend of literature, the general reader. If he, or she, can be persuaded to spend an hour or two, learning the past and present of the education of our girls, my purpose will have been accomplished. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address to Parents on the Education of Girls The subject I have chosen upon which to offer a few remarks is one the importance of which all will admit; but before entering on it, I wish to express the feeling of humility with which I undertake the task. -yet, . However incompetent one may feel to discuss so important a subject, I regard it as a duty to employ such means as maybe within my reach to awaken interest in the minds of parents. I endeavor merelv to indi cate the road, heping that others will pursue it further. Nothing can ex oecd the solicitude of most parents for the health'and enjoyment of their children; I wish to suggest that moral and intellectual progress must be sought after with equal avidity, or the happiness of the child will be ship wrecked. There is scarcely a habit, a mode of thought, or a peculiar taste that we possess, that cannot be traced to early influence, and early example. A look, a careless word, an inadvertent action, may be the lever of future deeds in some observing Deeply penetrated, then, with a sense of the impor tance of this matter, and anxious to arouse a corresponding interest in the minds of parents, I submit my views for their. Consideration, hoping only that my remarks may lead to a few fireside discussions, a few earnest thoughts. Books, enough and to Spare, have been written on education, but until we become desirous of acquiring knowledge on any particular subject, we do not seek the means. To kindle this desire in some hitherto indifferent, to solicit the sym pathy and co-operation of others already convinced of*its importance, is my only ambition, and I claim indulgence for an honest though imperfect effort made in behalf of what I believe is felt to be a universal want. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sex in Education: Or a Fair Chance for the Girls Neither is there any such thing as inferior ity or superiority in this matter. Man is not superior to woman, nor woman to man. The relation of the sexes is one of equality, not Of better and worse, or of higher and lower. By this it is not intended to say that the sexes are the same. They are different, widely dif ferent from each other, and so different that each can do, in certain directions, what the other cannot; and in other directions, where both can do the same things, one sex, as a rule, can do them better than the other; and in still other matters they seem to be so nearly al-ke, that they can interchange labor without perceptible difference. All this is so well known, that it would be useless to refer to it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education of Girls and Women in Great Britain IN tracing the history of any movement, the rate of development at different periods varies strikingly. There may be no growth for a long time occasionally the tide of progress may appear even to flow back; the spirit of a great reform dies out, and the customs and traditions which have grown up around that reform become a dead weight to hamper progress. Then faint signs of life are to be seen by those who are on the watch, half hearted protests against traditions, here and there revolts quickly quelled, and some discontent. These are promises of future life and vigour. Suddenly the scene is changed, or rather, it appears to be sudden to the casual observer; it is but the ending of a series of events to those who have watched carefully. We have an outburst of Utopian schemes, many brave beginnings, and many failures. All seems chaos for the time being; currents cross and re-cross the eternal struggle between the conservative element and the progressive element in humanity is intensified. Gradually out of disorder comes order and rest. But the world is not as it was: the trend of progress is altered; new forces have probably come into Operation.
