Book excerpt: "Over the next 150 years, members of the Association stood ready to advance the cause of education. This advancement was neither steady nor easy. The Association endured many crises, some financial and some organizational. Pushed at times by charismatic leaders and driven at other times by the winds of cultural change, the Association was, and still is, an organization of individuals." "The history of ISTA is divided into three eras. The first period deals with the defining of the Association and chronicles its quest for universal public education, and its efforts to establish professional standards and secure benefits for teachers. Although this group of educators was a loosely knit association of individuals, they were able to accomplish much."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching is an essential skill in becoming a faculty member in any institution of higher education. Yet how is that skill actually acquired by graduate students? Teaching as if Learning Matters collects first-person narratives from graduate students and new PhDs that explore how the skills required to teach at a college level are developed. It examines the key issues that graduate students face as they learn to teach effectively when in fact they are still learning and being taught. Featuring contributions from over thirty graduate students from a variety of disciplines at Indiana University, Teaching as if Learning Matters allows these students to explore this topic from their own unique perspectives. They reflect on the importance of teaching to them personally and professionally, telling of both successes and struggles as they learn and embrace teaching for the first time in higher education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The humorous stories, challenges, and wisdom from a long career in education are shared on these pages. The Education of a Teacher is a close-up look into the motives and actions of teachers, coaches, administrators, students, and parents. Steckler gives a detailed account of the successes and failures of the current system. We have all had teachers who made a positive impact on us. We are eternally grateful for the ones that were most effective. Their creativity, methods, personalities, and dedication are chronicled here. The many changes in discipline, funding, testing, and technology have fundamentally reorganized the educational landscape. The consequences of these changes are explained and appraised. This is a story of how our education has shaped our lives and helped determine our futures. The burden of high-stakes testing, new legislation, and budget shortfalls are examined in straightforward terms. Choosing a career in education is justified from a variety of perspectives. Education is the ultimate occupation in public service. It is hoped that students will be inspired by this book to pursue a career in teaching and existing teachers will gain insight into why they are so valuable to society.

Book excerpt: This report, based on both historical data and on a survey of new 1988-1989 hires in Indiana, examines the sources of teacher supply and the paths into teaching taken by newly hired teachers, and the ways these paths have changed over time. Surprisingly, experienced teachers today account for a larger proportion of new hires than inexperienced teachers; experienced teachers have grown as a proportion of new hires from 15 to 30 percent. Since the number of new hires has sharply decreased since the mid-1970s and most of these new hires are older, the average age of the teaching force has increased, suggesting that an effort must be made to attract young people to teaching to offset the supply reduction that will occur in 10 to 15 years as older teachers retire. The survey data examined here present a picture of a fluid, responsive, and dynamic teacher labor market. The findings suggest that a greater degree of cooperation between school districts and businesses might be a cost-effective way to recruit. Low-cost certification programs and scholarships might serve to attract career switchers. However, there seems to be little states can do to prevent breaks in service for teachers who leave and later return to teaching.
