Download or read book At the Sign of the Cat and Racket written by Honoré de Balzac and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from At the Sign of the Cat and Racket: La Maison Du Chat-Qui-Pelote Racket' itself, quite examples of putting the best foot foremost. Le Ba] de Sceaux, ' with its satire on contempt for trade, is in some ways more like Balzac's young friend and pupil Charles de Bernard than like himself; andi believe it attracted English notice pretty early. At least I seem, when quite a boy, and long before I read the Comea'z'e Humaine, to have seen an English version or paraphrase of it. 'la Bourse though agreeable, is a little slight and La Vendetta might have been written on so well known a donnee by many persons besides Balzac. It happens, moreover, to contrast most un fortunately with the terrible and exquisite perfection of Merimee's 'mateo Falcone.' I should rank 'madame Firmiani' a good deal higher than any of these three, though it too is a little slight, and though it is not in Balzac's most characteristic or important manner. Rather, perhaps, does it remind us of the Physiologies' and the other social 'skits' and sketches which he was writing for the Caricature and other papers at the time. Still, the various descriptions of the heroine have a point and sparkle which are almost peculiar to the not quite mature work of men of genius and the actual story has a light ness which, perhaps, would have disappeared if Balzac had handled it at greater length. The tale follows an old ex-Carmelite nun who is hiding from Robespierre with abject fear of what tomorrow may bring. Oozing with mystery and suspense, Balzac's allegorical prose is at its very finest here. The French author who, along with Flaubert, is widely regarded to be one of the founding fathers of realism in European fiction. Honoré de Balzac (1799-1850) was a French novelist and playwright, most famous for his collection of novels and plays, collectively called 'The Human Comedy'. His detailed observation of humanity and realistic depiction of society makes him one of the earliest representatives of realism in Europe. He was a master-creator of complex characters that often found themselves in ambiguous moral dilemmas.

Book excerpt: In this bestselling book that inspired the hit movie by the same name, starring Frank Sinatra, an apparent suicide forces a PI to reconsider his most famous case Joe Leland returned from World War II with a chest full of medals, but his greatest honor came after he traded his pilot’s wings for a detective’s shield. Catching the Leikman killer made Joe a local hero, but the shine quickly wore off, and it wasn’t long before he left the police force to start his own private agency. Years after his greatest triumph, Joe has a modest income and a quiet life—both of which may soon fall apart. When Colin MacIver dies at the local racetrack, the coroner rules that he took his own life, but his widow knows better. Because MacIver’s life insurance policy doesn’t cover suicide, his wife is left broke, desperate, and afraid for her safety. She hires Leland to find out who could have killed her gentle, unassuming husband—a simple question that will turn this humble city inside out.
