Book excerpt: She can see his memories, but he has more to hide than just his past… In a land divided by rebellion, Aini MacGregor manages her father’s magical candy lab and keeps everyone at arm’s length so she won’t see their memories—an entirely illegal ability that could land her in jail. But when a dangerously handsome apprentice named Thane arrives, she realizes it’s harder than she expected to stay out of trouble. But life goes from sweet to sour when the most nefarious clan in Scotland abducts her father. Thane Campbell has more secrets than truths in his tortured life. Sometimes, he forgets which is which. Spying on the candy lab for the clan chief, his father, Thane must develop a plan for using the MacGregors’ inventions to wreck havoc on the king’s court or his clan will kill him. He’s had plenty of chances to prove his loyalty, they say. If he isn’t careful, his growing feelings for the MacGregor lass will bring his death sentence on like a storm over the moors. With Mr. MacGregor in the clan’s grip, Aini and Thane dive into the dark side of their alternate Scotland and there is no way for everyone to come out alive. Book Synopsis The Brahan Seer by : Alex Sutherland
Download or read book The Brahan Seer written by Alex Sutherland and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brahan Seer is a legendary figure known throughout Scotland and the Scottish Diaspora and indeed anywhere there is an interest in looking into the future. This book traces the legend of the Seer between the sixteenth and twenty-first centuries. It considers the seer figure in relation to aspects of Scottish Highland culture and society that shaped its development during this period. These include the practice and prosecution of witchcraft, the reporting and scientific investigation of instances of second sight, and the perennial belief in and use of prophecy as a means of predicting events. In so doing the book provides a set of historicised contexts for understanding the genesis of the legend and how it changed over time through a synthesis of historical events, oral tradition, folklore and literary Romanticism. It makes a contribution to the debates not only about witchcraft, second sight and prophecy but also about the relationship between 'popular' and 'elite' culture in Scotland. By taking the Brahan Seer as a case study it argues that 'popular' culture is not antithetical to 'elite' culture but rather in constant (and complex) interaction with it.

Download or read book The Seer written by Ali Smith and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2006 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neil and Iona are a materialistic young Edinburgh couple whose relationship seems to be confined to arguing with each other about whether they should eat focaccia or ciabatta and working on 'case studies of the new Scotland'. Enter Kirsty, who may or may not be Iona's sister, who shatters their stultifying domestic routine by inventing tales by Finlay Finn McFinn, a spurious Highland seer. The Seer is, in part, a social satire, a sly poke at the 'new' Scotland and Smith is as playful as ever.
