Book Synopsis Biodiversity and Environmental Change by : Emma Burns
Download or read book Biodiversity and Environmental Change written by Emma Burns and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2014-02-06 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Long-term ecological data are critical for informing long-term trends in biodiversity and trends in environmental change. The Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) is a major initiative of the Australian Government and one of its key areas of investment is to provide funding for a network of long-term ecological research plots around Australia (LTERN). This book highlights some of the temporal changes in the environment and/or in biodiversity that have occurred in different ecosystems, ranging from tropical rainforests, wet eucalypt forests and alpine regions through to rangelands and deserts. Many important trends and changes are documented and they often provide new insights that were previously poorly understood or unknown. These data are precisely the kinds of data so desperately needed to better quantify the temporal trajectories in the environment and biodiversity in Australia.
Book Synopsis You Can’t Make It Rain by : Margaret Kowald
Download or read book You Can’t Make It Rain written by Margaret Kowald and published by Boolarong Press. This book was released on 2015-06-06 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The North Australian Pastoral Company is one of Australia’s largest and oldest private cattle companies. It began in the 1877 rush to take up land in the Northern Territory. A vast area of the Barkly Tableland was leased by a partnership of five men: Queenslanders William Collins, William Forrest and Sir Thomas McIlwraith, and Englishmen Sir William Ingram and John Warner. Today, the family-based company which evolved from the partnership still holds the greater part of that original land as Alexandria Station – the biggest cattle station in the Northern Territory. Descendent of three original partners still hold shares in the NAP company. The title – You Can’t Make it Rain – derives form a poignant comment of Phillip Forrest, managing director and chairman of NAP, shortly before he resignation in 1936. Forrest wrote. ‘I have done my best over a long trying period, but I cannot make it rain.’ The comment is a telling reminder of the over-riding importance of water for pastoralists, and of the often grim struggle for survival in that industry. You Can’t Make It Rain is the story of one notable survivor.

Book Synopsis Livestock Handling and Transport by : Temple Grandin
Download or read book Livestock Handling and Transport written by Temple Grandin and published by Cab International. This book was released on 2007 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together the latest research data and practical information on animal handling, restraint methods and the design of facilities and transport. Published 14 years after the first edition, the third edition is fully updated with the latest research findings. An extensively revised introductory chapter covers the increasing awareness of animal welfare around the world and outlines the effective auditing programmes of large, corporate meat buyers. Three new authors have chapters on sheep transport, biosecurity and low-stress methods for sorting cattle and weaning calves. To provide an additional perspective on livestock management in South America, Asia, India and other regions, two new co-authors have been added to the chapters on cattle transport and the handling of cattle raised in close association with people. The best of the old material - including all the popular handling system layouts and behaviour diagrams - has been kept. All aspects of animal handling are covered, such as handling for veterinary and husbandry procedures, stress physiology, restraint methods, transport, corral and stockyard design, handling at slaughter plants and welfare. The principles of animal behaviour are covered for cattle, sheep, pigs, horses, deer and poultry. The extensive reference lists in each chapter will help preserve important knowledge that may not be available on the Internet. Also, at the end of the book is an index of useful web pages on handling, behaviour and transport. This book is an invaluable resource for students and professionals in animal behaviour, applied psychology and animal and veterinary sciences, and livestock producers, regulatory bodies and animal welfare groups.

Book Synopsis Australian Agriculture by : Ted Henzell
Download or read book Australian Agriculture written by Ted Henzell and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2007-05-09 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture in Australia has had a lively history. The first European settlers in 1788 brought agricultural technologies with them from their homelands, influencing early practices in Australia. Wool production dominated the 19th century, while dairying grew rapidly during the first half of the 20th century. Despite having one of the driest landscapes in the world, Australia has been successful in adapting agricultural practices to the land, and these innovations in farming are explained in this well-researched volume. Focusing on the technologies that the farmers and graziers actually used, this book follows the history of each of the major commodities or groups of commodities to the end of the 20th century: grain crops, sheep and wool, beef and dairy, working bullocks and horses, sugar, cotton, fruit and vegetables, and grapes and wine. Major issues facing the various agricultural enterprises as they enter the 21st century are also discussed. Written in a readable style to suit students of history, social sciences and agriculture, Australian Agriculture will also appeal to professionals in the industry and those with a general interest in Australian sociology and history.
