The present work by Frank Rose addresses the fundamental question concerning the economics of information intermediaries by means of an abstract model. The model focuses on services that concentrate on the search and mediation of information, and identifies the essential influencing factors of the intermediary's environment. The model is then employed to investigate the impact of environmental conditions on the information intermediary on the one hand, and the optimal strategy of the information intermediary as a reaction to environmental conditions on the other hand.

In the economics of personal information, scarcity is no longer the only, and foremost, determinant of value. The most important determinant of value becomes connection. Adapting what Gervais claims to be the first law of an information-flooded cloud-modelled economy, value is not derived from scarcity but rather from the fact that those who value it most will find it. Personal information is the raw material to create connections. Intermediaries collect personal information in exchange for goods or services, regardless of whether they actually need that information to perform their main activity, and use this information to connect other goods and services with the users who value them most, e.g. via personalisation or targeted advertising. Many firms in many different sectors are, or could become, intermediaries of personal information, from Google to supermarkets, from telecom operators to insurance companies. The descriptive analysis of this industry has consequences in terms of business model and regulatory approach. As for the former, it is worth exploring the conditions for which a firm could profitably become an intermediary of personal information and thereby exploit untapped resources for revenue generation. As for the latter, an imperfect understanding of the economics of personal information creates the risk for misaligned norms, and therefore for an uneven competition.

For a better understanding of intermediaries, many works in economic literature have been devoted to the theoretical development of a model of intermediation in various market settings. In particular, the literature on market intermediation has addressed various issues by attempting to answer the following two questions :(1) Why and how do intermediaries exist?(2) What intermediaries contribute to the economy?The key conclusion of the literature is that intermediaries exist in the market because they enhance efficiency by improving on direct exchange. With full information and a costless search, direct search between consumers generally yields an efficient outcome with homogenous products. The direct exchange between consumers may require central coordination in a market with differentiated products, even with full information and a costless search. When buyers and sellers have incomplete information about the other side of the market and the search is costly, intermediaries can improve the efficiency of economic transactions. Intermediaries offer potential efficiencies by offering communication services and centralizing the matching of buyers and sellers. Also, they offer price signals, aggregate demand and supplies, and provide central places of exchange.In other words, intermediaries reduce inherent inefficiencies of the market and enhance net gains from market interactions by offering various transaction models. When doing so, intermediaries are in a better position to make connections than other economic agents (e.g., buyers and sellers), and consequently use their bridging positions in a number of ways. The role of intermediaries differs across markets, and therefore the distinctions among various types of intermediaries are important.Indeed, there are many types of intermediaries around the world. For example, an intermediary acts as a dealer in markets. The intermediary simply buys and resells a product, without adding any service to the transaction. Even with this simple activity, the intermediary may add value for some market participants. Another type of intermediary is called platform operators. The role of platform operators differs from that of dealers since they do not engage in direct sales with buyers and sellers. Instead, the platform operator provides a place where buyers and sellers are able to interact. Often, intermediaries play an important role in alleviating asymmetric problems between sellers and buyers. In some markets, the intermediary enhances efficiency by revealing information about a product's quality.In this paper, we discuss the role of intermediaries in various market contexts by using simple models from the intermediation literature. In particular, in section 2, we discuss the dealer role of an intermediary in a search market. And, in section 3, we review the certifier role of an intermediary in a market with asymmetric information. Finally, in section 4, we conclude.

The first essay studies the effect of asymmetry in platform-technology on competition and collaboration between intermediaries in two-sided markets. I find that collaboration between rivals in the form of direct or indirect inter-network access can lead to Pareto improvements in profits, with or without monetary transfers between them. Such improvements are most likely when the technological asymmetry between rivals is large, or the incumbent has a large installed base. Technology licensing deals are not possible without a pre-existing installed base for the inferior technology platform, but these too become more attractive with larger installed bases and technological asymmetry. The second and third essays focus on issues related to a specific kind of procurement intermediaries, known as Group Purchasing Organizations (GPOs). Hospitals in the United States join GPOs to improve procurement efficiencies and get deeper group discounts contracted for by GPOs. Some members further negotiate directly with the same vendors. The common perception is that hospitals benefit from such directly-established "custom contracts" as they yield prices lower than the GPO-negotiated prices. In the second essay, using a game-theoretic model, I find that allowing custom contracts benefits vendors at the expense of hospitals. I show how, with the provision for custom contracts, GPOs act as demand aggregators for small hospitals, and information intermediaries for the rest. The third essay explores the economic rationale behind compliance-based pricing in GPO contracts. The common perception is that higher purchase volume leads to lower unit price. I show that a vendor's fixed cost of managing an active B2B account and the heterogeneity in product preferences within the hospital can largely drive such compliance-based pricing. Interestingly, I find that it is possible for a hospital to get a lower price even when it buys fewer units, as compared to another hospital which is buying more from the same vendor but not fulfilling its entire demand from that vendor. I also show that, in certain cases, such pricing may not only decrease procurement cost but also increase social surplus"--Leaf iv.
