Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economics of Contracting, Vol. 1: A Treatise for Contractors, Engineers, Superintendents and Foreman Engaged in Engineering Contracting Work Ore than twenty years ago, when the author started out in the engineering contracting field, much had been writ ten ou engineering subjects, but little on contracting. When questions were asked as to different phases of conducting a contract, the reply was, that all of these things must be learned by experience, and it was frequently stated that Contractors are born not made. Those were the days when contracting was considered purely a business, but within the past two decades the execution of con struction contracts has become so specialized that today it must be considered as a profession, requiring organized knowledge. A profession is the result of a study of its principles and his tory, using the experience of others as a basis for the student and beginner. It is with this idea in view that this treatise has been given to the profession. The older contractors may find in it some thoughts and ideas that may be useful, and this book may assist them in realizing that some wastes still exist in their own business, and a few details that have not been mastered. The young man should not expect to become an experienced contractor by a close study of this treatise, but he can learn to do some things, and how to guard against both loss of time and money in eliminating mistakes made by others. Steinberg presents a practical and comprehensive guide to understanding virtually every aspect of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contracts for infrastructure projects. The 25 chapters in Volume 1 are supplemented with real-life examples and court decisions, and offer tactical advice for anyone who must negotiate or understand EPC contracts in connection with the implementation, financing or operation of infrastructure projects. Emphasizing current market practices and strategic options for risk sharing, the book contains a narrative explanation of the underpinning of all of the issues involved in EPC contracting. Exhaustive in scope, it clarifies the fundamental commercial principles and pitfalls of "turnkey" contracting for all types of capital investments ranging from electrical and thermal power generation (including combined heat and power, nuclear, wind, solar, natural gas and coal) to refining, to chemical processing to LNG liquefaction and re-gasification to high speed rail, bridging, tunneling and road building. Providing clear and thorough analyses of the issues and challenges, this volume will be of great value to all those involved in complex construction projects.

A typical regulator is shown in Fig. 1. The use of regulators of this type is open to the objection that frequent attendance is required in order to keep the apparatus in proper working condition. The regulators must be inspected and cleaned at short inter vals, and after each storm must be carefully overhauled, if they are to be depended upon to perform their function. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engineering and Contracting, Vol. 53: Devoted to the Economics of Civil Engineering Design and to Methods and Costs of Construction; Index; January June, 1920 Take definition (a). Is it necessary to include the word art in a modern definition of engineering? What is an art, as here used? The old logicians and philosophers divided knowledge into two classes: (1) Art and (2) Science. But they were by no means agreed as to a definite dividing line between the two.
