We know from history that as far back as Aristotle's time learned men of influence tried to solve the riddle, but failed. The economic evil is one of the problems of political economy. Since political economy is the science that treats of our own doings and there is nothing supernatural in it, the riddle is certainly solvable. I venture to say that any one who will read this pamphlet with an honest desire to learn the facts in the case will become convinced that the solution is now an accomplished fact. There are men who would put under ban any knowledge that might affect the present social order. But there are, and for centuries have been, others who have sought the cause of the evil for the sole purpose of removing it, regardless of consequences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Economy: A Peaceable Solution of the Social Problem "Behind the silver movement there was an undoubted feeling of popular discontent with the established order of things, which is likely to become more desperate through defeat. Indeed, it looks more like the beginning of a great social and economic struggle than the end." - The St. James Gazette. Something, indeed, must be done! That was true before our war with Spain - it is still more true after it. To be sure, we as a people are better off than we were a short time ago; this is conformable to what this writer has long insisted upon, to-wit: that our competitive system must lead to disaster, not by a straight road, however, but by a wave-like path: comparative prosperity, alternating with steadily increasing adversity. Hence the better times we now enjoy will infallibly, in a few years, be followed by harder times than our people have yet endured. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Social Problems: Edited With an Introduction In the long run the basic social problem is that of population. Economically the most fundamental relation is that between man and natural resources. The laws governing that relation must be understood and reckoned with first of all, in theories of social progress or in plans for the lasting improvement of the condi tion of the people. If these natural laws, whatever they may be, are not taken into consideration, every plan and ideal for human betterment runs the risk of impracticability, or else of being brought to naught even after it has seemingly realized its pur pose. The nature of natural resources sets a limit, albeit an elastic one, to man's productivity - a limit which may be at a given time and place so highly elastic or so far in the future that it does not seem a reality, but at another place or time may prove to be a very present fact. No principle of economic science is better established than that sooner or later with in creasing population the law of diminishing returns will assert itself in a way that will demand changes in economic, social, and political policies, if the average material well-being of a people is not to be brought to a standstill or actually to go backward. Moreover, a certain level of material wealth is a pre requisite to even a moderate development of the cultural and spiritual content of life. Failure or unwillingness, therefore, to consider the limitation placed upon the material basis of progress by a strictly limited supply of land, and the increasing difficulty of securing the food, raw materials, and power requisite to the needs of an expanding population, can be attributed only to ingrained preconception and prejudice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems in American Society: Some Social Studies Let the light Shine into every nook and comer, and let every piece be tested; for, if there is anything out of order, it is high time that it be mended, and, if there is anything which has become obsolete, it is high time that it be cast aside for something better. Criticism will lead in creativeness, and after wild vagaries will come the saner mood. Vast improvements in the form and content of human life will result from this free and intense application of thought to all these questions of poverty, crime, education, economics, and religious co-operation. It is only by such discussion that we can hope to reach modes of life, individual and corporate, on a level with our intelligence. And one of the most hopeful indications of the hour is this growing interest in all matters which pertain to the problem of living. The social impulse which seeks to put a truth to divine uses is as necessary as the scientific spirit which seeks to discover that truth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of American Democracy: Political, Economic, Social To the gradual crystallization of educational thought in favor of a general study of the social sciences in secondary institutions, this book owes its origin. The attempt has been made to acquaint the student with the bold outlines of the political, economic, and social development of Amer ican institutions. The task involved presented so much freedom of choice that, naturally, opinion may differ as to the relative importance of the various materials available for this purpose. However, the aim has been to provide the student with typical material for a general introduc tory course in problems of democracy, which not only stresses certain fundamental characteristics of our own civilization, but preserves at the same time a proper bal ance between the political, the economic, and the social factors in American life. Furthermore, the topics selected have been treated as unified problems, each of which is dis cussed from the standpoint of general social development, rather than subdivided into a series of separate, air-tight compartments labeled political, economic, and social. Since this volume presents a combined treatment of these three elements, it is intended primarily to meet the needs of those institutions in which opportunity is lacking for a detailed treatment of the social sciences individually. It follows the same method pursued in the companion books, A merican Economic Life and A merican Social Problems, and draws upon material contained therein. It marks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Strikes and Social Problems The contents of this volume in their original form were, for the most part, given as addresses during the last five years, and were intended to deal in a popular manner with various social problems. The first six treat specially and directly of the conflicts between Labour and Capital, and of the interests of both in conciliation. The next four, though dealing indirectly with the same topics, are designed to show more generally the importance of economic principles in legislation and administration. The last two were suggested by a voyage around Africa, and are intended to illustrate the application of these principles in undeveloped countries. One of the best examples, perhaps, of the necessity of constantly appealing to the most elementary and generally admitted principles is furnished by the continuance under British dominion of slavery in Zanzibar. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of the Unemployed, an Enquiry and an Economic Policy It is hoped that this restatement of the position, by its specific application to the concrete problem of the unem ployed and by the central importance assigned to the idea of Under-consumption, may avoid some of the mis understanding to which earlier statements were liable. By its explanation of Unemployment as a natural and necessary result of a mal-distribution of consuming-power, contained in economic rent and superfluous elements of profit, the argument claims a distinct place in the theory of social progress. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Economic Problems The outlook and sympathies that are expressed or tacitly assumed throughout this work are not so much those personal to the author as they are those of our present day American democratic society, taken at about its center of gravity. When the people generally feel difierently as to the ends to be at tained, a different public policy must be formulated, tho the economic analysis may not need to be changed. Therefore, in some cases, the author has discussed merely the economic as pect, or has referred to the general principles treated in vol ume one, and has purposely refrained from expressing his personal judgment as to the best policy for the moment. The present volume was planned some years ago as a re vision of a part of the author's earlier text, The Principles of Economics The intervening years have, however, been so replete with notable economic and social legislation and have witnessed the growth of a wider public interest in so many economic subjects, that both in range and in treatment this work necessarily grew to be more than a revision. Except in a few chapters, occasional sentences and paragraphs are all of the specific features of the older text that remain. Sug gestive of the rapid changes occurring in the economic field is the fact that a number of statements made in the manuscript a few months or a few weeks ago had to be amended in the proof sheets to accord with recent events. The author's debt for information, inspiration, and assist ance in various phases of the work is a large one. The debt is owing to many, - authors, colleagues, and students. A few of the sources that have been drawn upon will be indicated in a pamphlet following the plan of the Manual of References and Exercises in Economics, already published for use in connection with Volume I; but the limits of space will prevent a complete enumeration. I wish, however, in particular, to acknowledge gratefully the aid and friendly criticisms given in connection with the chapters on money and banking, onlabor problems, and on the principles of insurance, respec tively, by my colleagues, E. W. Kemmerer, D. A. Mccabe, and N Carothers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Social Problem: Life and Work Tms volume is designed to be an informal introduction to the science and art of social progress. It does not profess to furnish any sufficient outline of sociology or politics, but seeks to ask and answer certain preliminary questions which confront thinking men and women who are interested in work of social reform, and wish to reach satisfactory intelligible principles for their guidance in such work. Its primary object is to enforce the recognition of the organic unity of the problem of social progress by showing the interactions of the many concrete questions and movements which divide the attention of social reformers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Toward a Better Understanding of Social Systems This paper attempts to outline a few improvements I feel we must make in the way we think about and attempt to manage our social systems. Social problems, defined broadly, are the problems of people acting in groups. Social problems occur at many different levels-from the interaction of members of a family or the management of a production line, to the behavior of our national economy or the evolution of our values, our culture and our civilization. Although the problems encountered at each level can be very different, the lack of insight and understanding we have had at all levels has been due in general to the same reasons. So although I here have time to discuss only a few of the myriad of possible social questions, much of what is said I think can be applied equally well to the analysis of most of our many other economic and social problems. Book excerpt: Reviews the status of African Americans through research on Africa, the West Indies, and the Colonies, and how those different settings have affected the economic and social capabilities of the African people. It provides a history of cooperation among African Americans, describing its beginnings in the African church and its further progress as seen in the development of the Underground Railroad. Du Bois moves on to discuss the roles of emancipation, the Freedmen's Bureau, and migration. There is considerable detail and statistics about various types of economic cooperation including churches, schools, beneficial and insurance societies, secret societies, cooperative benevolence, banks, and cooperative business.
