Book excerpt: Excerpt from Development and Activities of Roots of Crop Plants: A Study in Crop Ecology Preliminary studies Of root systems of native plants in soils impregnated with alkali point out clearly that the adaptation of plant to habitat is Often largely one of root distribution above or below the layers of greatest salt concentration. With adequate knowledge Of the variability of the root systems of different varieties of crop plants, selection Of those most suitable for cultivation in such areas should be less difficult. Roots are not commonly very well kept in hast ments. Where the basement consists of a single large chamber the air is too dry and also too warm to keep roots hard and crisp. It is necessary in separate the storage room from the room con taining the heating plant. Cement walls make the best partitions hut close heard walls will serve. If other necessary conditions can be secured. Direct contact with outside air is desirable by tiles or window slits. Book Synopsis The Biology of Flowering Plants (Classic Reprint) by : Macgregor Skene
Download or read book The Biology of Flowering Plants (Classic Reprint) written by Macgregor Skene and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-13 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biology of Flowering Plants This book is an attempt to give an account of the way in which the flowering plant lives, especially in relation to its environment. This, it might be said, is the aim of ecology but ecology approaches the plant as a member Of a community, while biology, as it is understood here, is interested rather in the plant as an individual. In its methods biology has, during the last generation, become more and more experimental; it builds on a foundation of physiology. A certain amount of pure physiology must therefore be introduced. The difficulty of giving enough to make the foundation sound, and yet not so much as to obscure the picture, has been fully realised, though perhaps not overcome. The great majority of the drawings in the text are the work of Miss A. M. Davidson; about one-third are original, and these bear her initials, the remainder are copied, sometimes with modifications, from various sources which are acknowledged in the underlines. I am indebted to Professor J. E. Weaver for permission to reproduce Figs. 1, 2, 4, and 5 from his Ecological Relations of Roots. Fig. 50 is taken from Miss E. Kirkwood's Plant and Flower Forms. The photographs are original, and for help in their preparation I am indebted to Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Roots of Ecology by : Frank N. Egerton
Download or read book Roots of Ecology written by Frank N. Egerton and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2012-07-17 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecology is the centerpiece of many of the most important decisions that face humanity. Roots of Ecology documents the deep ancestry of this now enormously important science from the early ideas of Herodotos, Plato, and Pliny, up through those of Linnaeus and Darwin, to those that inspired Ernst Haeckel's mid-nineteenth-century neologism ecology. Based on a long-running series of regularly published columns, this important work gathers a vast literature illustrating the development of ecological and environmental concepts, ideas, and creative thought that has led to our modern view of ecology. Roots of Ecology should be on every ecologist's shelf.

Download or read book Root Ecology written by Hans de Kroon and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-05-21 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the course of evolution, a great variety of root systems have learned to overcome the many physical, biochemical and biological problems brought about by soil. This development has made them a fascinating object of scientific study. This volume gives an overview of how roots have adapted to the soil environment and which roles they play in the soil ecosystem. The text describes the form and function of roots, their temporal and spatial distribution, and their turnover rate in various ecosystems. Subsequently, a physiological background is provided for basic functions, such as carbon acquisition, water and solute movement, and for their responses to three major abiotic stresses, i.e. hard soil structure, drought and flooding. The volume concludes with the interactions of roots with other organisms of the complex soil ecosystem, including symbiosis, competition, and the function of roots as a food source.
