Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: PaV1 (Panulirus argus virus 1) is a lethal contact-transmitted pathogen that infects the Caribbean spiny lobster, Panulirus argus. Juvenile lobsters are highly susceptible to this pathogen, which prior to mortality causes fundamental changes in their ecology. However, P. argus can reduce infection risk by avoiding shelters inhabited by infected lobsters. Based on its role in many other aspects of lobster ecology such as conspecific attraction and mate searching, I hypothesized that olfaction was the most likely mechanism by which lobsters detect PaV1-infected conspecifics. A series of Y-maze experiments were used to test this hypothesis and determine the source of the olfactory cue. Shelter avoidance behavior also has the potential to alter population structuring dynamics, and based on the type of cue, could be affected by local hydrodynamics. To investigate this, shelters and diseased cues were manipulated for wild populations in both high and low flow environments. Results showed that diseased avoidance is driven by olfaction via urine release, and moreover, the olfactory cue alone was equivalent in effectiveness to having a diseased lobster present and visible. When given a choice between sheltering with diseased or non-diseased conspecifics, lobsters rarely sheltered with diseased individuals. In the field, detection of PaV1-infected conspecifics can alter structuring dynamics of natural populations especially under low flow regimes by inducing emigration and redistribution of non-diseased animals relative to diseased conspecifics. In shelter-limited environments, as occurs in many regions of the Caribbean, the unavailability of shelters due to disease avoidance could increase juvenile mortality and potentially impact future adult stocks.

Fishing also impacts and disturbs animals that are not caught, but interact with fishing gears. These indirect effects of fishing often go unnoticed but may be an important component of the overall ecosystem modification for which fisheries are responsible. In this study, we quantified indirect effects within the Caribbean spiny lobsters (Panulirus argus) fishery in the Florida Keys, USA, including mechanisms that resulted in behavioral modification and lobster mortality, and potential population and economic consequences of these indirect effects. The spiny lobster fishery in the Florida Keys has intense recreational sport-diver effort during a 2d mini-season in which 80-90% of legal lobsters are removed from some areas, and an over capitalized commercial trap fishery where>900,000 lobster traps are deployed annually. In field surveys we observed a 27% increase in the density of injured lobsters on patch reef habitats from before to after the 2 d mini-season, but not in other habitat types. In laboratory Y-maze shelter choice experiments, we observed that un-injured lobsters were less likely to shelter with injured lobsters than with un-injured lobsters. Using disturbance experiments conducted in the field we observed that disturbing and injuring lobsters on a coral patch-head caused individuals to emigrate from that patch-head before the mini-season, but had no effect on lobster density on patch heads after the mini-season. When lobsters were tethered in the field, mortality was higher when injured than un-injured. Similarly, lobsters that were exposed to triggerfish predators (Balistes capriscus) in a large seawater arena had a higher probability of mortality after being disturbed and injured. The behavioral response of lobsters exposed to human disturbance and the predation threat presented by triggerfish were compared in the same seawater arena mentioned above. Both human disturba.

Book excerpt: Invasive Indo-Pacific lionfishes (Pterois volitans and P. miles) threaten Caribbean coral reefs, yet there has been little examination of possible economic effects of this invasion. In this thesis I explore interactions between lionfish and Caribbean spiny lobsters (Panulirus argus) in natural reef environments and in Bahamian 'condo' fishing gear. In both settings I found circumstantial evidence for competition for space between the two species but it is unclear who is displacing whom. Deterministic economic modeling revealed a modest cost to lobster fishers who take time to kill lionfish or work more slowly to avoid their venomous spines. However, this cost exacerbated the negative effects of variation in other components of the fishery, such as lobster price, time taken to gather lobsters, and amount harvested at each condo. This study provides the first attempt to quantify some of the economic impacts of invasive lionfish.
