Book excerpt: The Eclogues Virgil - Virgil's great lyrics, rendered by the acclaimed translator of GilgameshThe Eclogues of Virgil gave definitive form to the pastoral mode, and these magically beautiful poems, which were influential in so much subsequent literature, perhaps best exemplify what pastoral can do. "Song replying to song replying to song," touchingly comic, poignantly sad, sublimely joyful, the various music that these shepherds make echoes in scenes of repose and harmony, and of hardship and trouble in work and love.Available in ebook for the first time, this English-only edition of The Eclogues of Virgil includes concise, informative notes and an introduction that describes the fundamental role of this deeply original book in the pastoral tradition.

But it is part Of the delightful interest Of the Edogues, that we seem there to be con tinually surprising the young craftsman, either in his 'prentice work, studying his craft and unblushingly imitating his forerunners, or cast ing furtive shadows of himself and his history on the idyllic grass where Tityrus and Corydon are the ideal counterfeits. Professor Nettleship, in an essay accompanying his reprint Of the Ancient Lives of Virgil (published by the Clarendon Press in worked out compara tively after a most interesting fashion some of the cross-evidences that bear on the poet's life afforded by Suetonius and others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eclogues of Virgil (in English in Hexameter Verse) The study of some portion of Virgil's poems has long been considered a requisite for students pursuing an extended course of education. Martin Luther when a young man at the University made a thorough study of Cicero, Virgil and other classic authors in preparation for his life work. It is not strange that a man of his genius should find delight in the expressive beauty of Virgil's thoughts and Virgil's style. Many boys and girls in the early part of their classical course have been deeply impressed with the vivid representations and the elegance of these lines; and have had feelings similar to those of a boy fourteen years of age who was reading the story of the overthrow of Troy, and who said to his teacher that if he ever became a rich man, he would like to give the money to rebuild that ancient city. I have long thought it would be a good thing to have Virgil's poems translated into English in hexameter verse for the benefit of those persons who are not able to read them in the language in which Virgil wrote them. Thy breeding ewes will eat accustom ed food Nor from a neighbour's ock take any ill. O fortunate old friend Near well-known streams And hallowed fountains canst thou woo cool shade Near boundary hedge, where bees from Hybla, take Their fill of honeyed willow-blossom, thou By their sweet murmurous hum wilt oft be lulled To softest slumber Here beneath high rocks The gatherers of leaves, with cheerful songs Fill the high winds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Virgil in English Verse: Eclogues and AEneid I-Vi A translator of Virgil into English verse finds the road along which he has undertaken to travel strewn with the bleaching bones of unfortunate pilgrims who have preceded him. The adventures and the fate of the greater number have been briefly set forth in an essay published by the late Professor Conington in the Quarterly Review of July 1861, and reprinted in the first volume of his miscellaneous writings. That a translation of the zeneid, to be of any real and permanent value, must be in itself an English poem, is an axiom to which few will take exception. That the English poem in its turn should be a translation, and not merely a paraphrase, is a condition singularly hard to fulfil in the case of an original poet who, like Virgil, presents exceptional obstacles even to prose translators. Owing to the difficulty of satisfying these two apparently simple tests, most Virgilian versifiers have perished in the wilderness. There is nothing to be left void in a firm building; even the cavities ought not to be filled with rubbish, (which is of a perishable kind, destructive to the strength), but with brick or stone, though of less pieces, yet of the same nature, and fitted to the crannies. Even the least portions of them must be of the epic kind: all things must be grave, majestical, and sublime; nothing of a foreign nature, like the trifling naviels, which Ariosto and others have inserted in their poems by which the reader is misled into another sort of pleasure, Opposite to that which is designed in an epic poem. One raises the soul, and hardens it to virtue; the other softens it again, and unbends it into vice. One -conduces to the poet's aim, the completing of his work, which he is driving on, labouring and hastening in every line; the other slackens his pace, diverts him from his way, and locks him up like a knight errant in an en chanted castle, when he should be pursuing his first adventure. Statius, as Bossu has well Ob served, was ambitions of trying his strength with his master Virgil, as Virgil had before tried his with Homer. The Grecian gave the two Romans. Thus a poet had the honor of de termining the greatest point that ever was in debate, betwixt the son-in-law and the favorite of Caesar. Virgil delivered his opinion in words to this effect The change of a popular into an absolute govern ment has generally been of very ill consequence for betwixt the hatred of the people, and injustice of the prince, it of necessity comes to pass that they live in distrust and mutual apprehension. But if the commons knew a just person, whom they in tirely confided in, it would be for the advantage of all parties that such a one should be their sove reign. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Publius Vergilius Maro (70-19 B.C.), known in English as Virgil, was perhaps the single greatest poet of the Roman empire—a friend to the emperor Augustus and the beneficiary of wealthy and powerful patrons. Most famous for his epic of the founding of Rome, the Aeneid, he wrote two other collections of poems: the Georgics and the Bucolics, or Eclogues. The Eclogues were Virgil's first published poems. Ancient sources say that he spent three years composing and revising them at about the age of thirty. Though these poems begin a sequence that continues with the Georgics and culminates in the Aeneid, they are no less elegant in style or less profound in insight than the later, more extensive works. These intricate and highly polished variations on the idea of the pastoral poem, as practiced by earlier Greek poets, mix political, social, historical, artistic, and moral commentary in musical Latin that exerted a profound influence on subsequent Western poetry. Poet Len Krisak's vibrant metric translation captures the music of Virgil's richly textured verse by employing rhyme and other sonic devices. The result is English poetry rather than translated prose. Presenting the English on facing pages with the original Latin, Virgil's Eclogues also features an introduction by scholar Gregson Davis that situates the poems in the time in which they were created.
