Book excerpt: This historical manual for primary school teachers was designed for use alongside textbooks of the 1880s, and provides abundant insight into the classrooms of the era. Written at a time when most teaching in America took place in small schoolhouses, the author - who wrote anonymously - speaks of the sheer demand for standardized guidance among teachers of the time. There was no national system of education in the USA during the 1880s; rather there were local authorities, loosely overseen by superintendents usually based in the larger towns and cities. Many of the schools of the era were poorly organized, their teachers often lacking professional training or standardized education in tutoring. This handbook is designed to remedy several of the classic pitfalls made in the classroom. It provides guidance on the subjects of the time: reading, spelling, arithmetic, English grammar, geography and history and physiology. While the text references the McGuffey's series of textbooks popular at the time, as a standalone resource it is insightful. Some sixty-three tables and illustrations accompany the text, which establishes a comprehensive teaching regimen.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles and Methods of Teaching: A Manual for Normal Schools, Reading Circles, and the Teachers of Elementary, Intermediate, and Higher Schools The individual teacher must have part in the construction of the science in which his art is to have its foundations. Otherwise the new education will simply substitute one tyrant for another. In other words, obedience to principles of philosophy, though it be the best philosophy, is only slavery as long as the teacher who submits to such laws cannot justify these in his own consciousness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teachers Manual of Primary Methods When, a few years ago, the Department of Education was established in the Catholic University, it was felt by those placed in charge of it that the most important work which it should undertake was a revision of primary text-books so as to render them both scientific and Catho lic, and a revision Of primary methods which would render our work fruitful in placing religion in the heart of the curriculum and in giving to it the preponderating influence which it should have in the developing minds and hearts of Catholic children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher's Assistant, or Hints and Methods in School Discipline and Instruction Such as it is, the author commends it to the kindly consideration of teachers, assuring them that his heart is in full sympathy with them in their efforts to discipline and instruct the youth intrusted to their charge. Engaged in a noble work, may they earnestly and constantly seek for higher and better qualifications, so that they may prove honor able and honored members of a profession of no mean importance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher's Manual, Vol. 2: The Teacher's Method, With Copious Word Lists We now pass from general considerations to the Phone tic Method itself. It is assumed that the teacher is already familiar with the Manual, to which constant references will be given. It is now only necessary to give some guidance in the applica tion of the system to the particular work of teaching to read. The following is recommended as a general scheme, and will serve as a useful introduction to a series of detailed lessons, and notes based upon the Child's Key, and intended for use either in connection with it, or as an independent guide to blackboard lessons for young children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods in Teaching: Being the Stockton Methods in Elementary Schools Among the exhibits at the St. Louis and Portland Expositions was one from the Stockton Schools. It was so arranged as to show in the smallest possible compass as complete a picture of the development of the course of study as could be presented in written form. The work in all bound volumes was shown in the following sequence: 1. A typewritten monograph, or method sheet, treating of the subject illustrated in the volume. 2. The course of study in the subject in printed form. 3. The teacher's daily program. 4. Work from the pupils, showing all the written lessons given in the subject from the first lesson in September to the last lesson in June. Under this arrangement the methods followed, the course of study to be carried out, the time value of every subject, the results secured, were shown in every volume. There were ninety-two monographs, or method sheets, illustrating fully the methods followed in the different subjects taught. In all cases these monographs were written by the principals or teachers. These volumes of method sheets, illustrated as they were with the results secured from pupils, met with a generous commendation from the teachers of America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles and Practice of Continuation Teaching: A Manual of Principles and Teaching Methods Specially Adapted to the Requirements of Teachers in Commercial and Continuation Schools IN writing this book I have been conscious of two main purposes - to give inspiration and to give help. I have particularly remem bered the reader for whom the text is primarily intended, and I have accordingly refrained from plunging too deeply into peda gogical theory and speculation, preferring that those who are inter ested should pursue their studies farther afield. At the same time I have endeavoured to offer some definite body of theoretical principles to those whose reading will, of choice or of necessity, be confined to the limits of these pages. Throughout, I have been mindful of things as they are - of the teacher as he is, and of the student as he is. As between What is and what might be I have felt that this book Should primarily consider what is that it should look thingsvsquarely in the face, and, as far as possible, give those who consult it a present help - help straightway directed to their immediate needs and circumstances. At the same time I cannot expect that the very definite expressions of opinion which I have allowed myself upon a very wide range of matters, will escape challenge or controversy: my justification is that I hope thereby to have stimulated in my readers an active, as dis tinguished from a merely passive, interest in educational questions. If I have in measure done this, I feel that to that extent, at least, my efforts will have proved successful.
