Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Bank Discussion Paper No. 356. The World Bank has become the world's largest lender in the health, nutrition, and population (HNP) sectors, requiring the institution to seek ever greater evidence that its work is effective on the ground. This paper reviews the literature on the causes of observed changes in health and fertility levels, on the evaluation of policies, and on programs designed to accelerate these changes. It presents a framework that delineates the relationships between Bank activities in the HNP sectors, the characteristics of a health care system, household behavior, and changes in health outcomes. The paper also describes a strategy for assessing the development effectiveness of the Bank's work in these sectors. The underlying thesis is that changes in health policy and improved outcomes depend on the the demand for health services and on institutional incentives that drive health care system performance.

Book Synopsis Guidelines for Constructing Consumption Aggregates for Welfare Analysis by : Angus Deaton
Download or read book Guidelines for Constructing Consumption Aggregates for Welfare Analysis written by Angus Deaton and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In September 2001, staff from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund met with the objective of strengthening collaboration between the two organizations in projects of civil service reform. This strengthened collaboration will have key benefits in ensuring consistency between the conflicting goals of the two organizations, establishing realistic objectives within the reform process, and maintaining a core set of wage and employment data. The principal conclusion arrived at was that World Bank and IMF staff should be engaging in collaboration earlier in the reform process. To guide the collaboration, six foundations were identified. These include: develop a medium-term fiscal framework; foster national ownership by making reforms politically feasible; focus and streamline conditionality; agree on sequencing and timing of reforms; and strengthen data collection. These principals will be tested for effectiveness in several focus countries.
Book Synopsis Unemployment, Inequality and Poverty in Urban China by : Hiroshi Sato
Download or read book Unemployment, Inequality and Poverty in Urban China written by Hiroshi Sato and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-09-27 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Chinese economy is growing at a very high rate, there are massive social dislocations arising as a result of economic restructuring. Though the scale of the problem is huge, very few studies have examined the changes in income inequality in the late 1990s due to a lack of data on household incomes. Based on extensive original research, this book redresses this imbalance, examining the issue of unemployment and the problems it has brought for the people of China. Investigating the market outcomes in post-reform urban China, the book focuses on the relationships between unemployment, inequality, and poverty. In addition, the authors provide an analysis on the emerging urban labour market and its stratified structure, job mobility, profit sharing, and the role of social capital. Empirical analysis is supported by rich data from nationally representative urban household and rural migrant surveys, providing the latest picture of the widening inequality in Chinese urban society.

Book Synopsis Improving Data on Poverty in the Third World by : Paul Glewwe
Download or read book Improving Data on Poverty in the Third World written by Paul Glewwe and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1990 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper is an account of the World Bank's effort to collect household-level data on poverty in developing countries and what that data says about the effects of government policies on living conditions of the poor. The main objective of the Living Standards Measurement Study (LSMS) surveys is to provide household-level data for evaluating the population's living conditions. This paper gives a history of LSMS and shows general trends that emerged in studies for which LSMS data are available: (a) most of the poor are in rural areas; (b) most of the poor are in households in which the head works in agriculture; and (c) the heads of poor households have low levels of education. Selected results of studies on the persistence of poverty, the effects on the poor, structural adjustment, food stamps and food subsidies, and raising user fees for health care and education are presented.
