Book Synopsis Pedro de Ribadeneyra’s 'Ecclesiastical History of the Schism of the Kingdom of England' by : Spencer J. Weinreich
Download or read book Pedro de Ribadeneyra’s 'Ecclesiastical History of the Schism of the Kingdom of England' written by Spencer J. Weinreich and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 865 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1588, the Spanish Jesuit Pedro de Ribadeneyra published a history of the English Reformation, which he continued to revise until his death in 1611. Spencer J. Weinreich’s translation is the first English edition of the History, one fully alive to its metamorphoses over two decades. Weinreich’s introduction explores the text’s many dimensions—propaganda for the Spanish Armada, anti-Protestant polemic, Jesuit hagiography, consolation amid tribulation—and assesses Ribadeneyra as a historian. The extensive annotations anchor Ribadeneyra’s narrative in the historical record and reconstruct his sources, methods, and revisions. The History, long derided as mere propaganda, emerges as remarkable evidence of the centrality of historiography to the intellectual, theological, and political battles of early modern Europe.

Book Synopsis The Sacred Writings of Hermias Sozomen by : Hermias Sozomen
Download or read book The Sacred Writings of Hermias Sozomen written by Hermias Sozomen and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Sacred Writings Of ..." provides you with the essential works among the Early Christian writings. The volumes cover the beginning of Christianity until before the promulgation of the Nicene Creed at the First Council of Nicaea. This volume is accurately annotated, including * an extensive biography of the author and his life Sozomen's 'Ecclesiastical History' was written in Constantinople, around the years 440 to 443 and was dedicated to Emperor Theodosius II. The work is structured into nine books, roughly arranged along the reigns of Roman Emperors: Book I: from the conversion of Constantine I until the Council of Nicea (312-325) Book II: from the Council of Nicea to Constantine's death (325-337) Book III: from the death of Constantine I to the death of Constans I (337-350) Book IV: from the death of Constans I to the death of Constantius II (350-361) Book V: from the death of Constantius I to the death of Julian the Apostate (361-363) Book VI: from the death of Julian to the death of Valens (363-375) Book VII: from the death of Valens to the death of Theodosius I (375-395) Book VIII: from the death of Theodosius I to the death of Arcadius (375-408). Book IX: from the death of Arcadius to the accession of Valentinian III (408-25). Book IX is incomplete. In his dedication of the work, he states that he intended cover up to the 17th consulate of Theodosius II, that is, to 439. The extant history ends about 425. Scholars disagree on why the end is missing. Albert Guldenpenning supposed that Sozomen himself suppressed the end of his work because in it he mentioned the Empress Aelia Eudocia, who later fell into disgrace through her supposed adultery. However, it appears that Nicephorus, Theophanes, and Theodorus Lector did read the end of Sozomen's work, according to their own histories later. Therefore most scholars believe that the work did actually come down to that year, and that consequently it has reached us only in a damaged condition. (courtesy of wikipedia.com)

Book Synopsis A Brief History of the Roman Empire by : Stephen P. Kershaw
Download or read book A Brief History of the Roman Empire written by Stephen P. Kershaw and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this lively and very readable history of the Roman Empire from its establishment in 27 BC to the barbarian incursions and the fall of Rome in AD 476, Kershaw draws on a range of evidence, from Juvenal's Satires to recent archaeological finds. He examines extraordinary personalities such as Caligula and Nero and seismic events such as the conquest of Britain and the establishment of a 'New Rome' at Constantinople and the split into eastern and western empires. Along the way we encounter gladiators and charioteers, senators and slaves, fascinating women, bizarre sexual practices and grotesque acts of brutality, often seen through eyes of some of the world's greatest writers. He concludes with a brief look at how Rome lives on in the contemporary world, in politics, architecture, art and literature.
