Not illustrated. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VI The Ceremonies Of The Jubilee In the still unpublished diary1 of Francesco Mucanzio, papal master of ceremonies at the close of the sixteenth century, we find that distinguished rubrician in December, 1574, discussing at some length the ritual to be used in the unwalling of the Holy Door at the forthcoming celebration of the Jubilee. He tells us that as the time for the ceremony drew near he went to his Holiness Pope Gregory XIII. and submitted to him a memorandum concerning the preparations to be made, and the things to be then observed. It appears, however, that his colleague in the office of master of ceremonies also went to the Pope with a similar programme, which he declared to be that which had been followed by Julius III. in the year 1550. "It differed very little from mine," says Mucanzio, "except in the versicles and responses. Those which I had set down were taken from an ancient roll (a quodam rotulo antiquo) used in the time of Clement VII., and of these versicles there was probably no accurate copy forthcoming in 1550 on account of the pillage and disasters to which the city had been subjected [he refers presumably to the sack of Rome in 1527]; hence they had been somewhat altered. My opinion was that out of the two sets which we had before us, a third more appropriate than either might have been drawn up, but when the matter was proposed in the Congregation of Cardinals appointed for the revision of ceremonies, they decided that as regards the versicles 1The copy here quoted is contained in MS. Addit. 26811 at the British Museum. and prayers the precedent of Julius III.'s time should be adhered to in every particular. The fact is," adds Mucanzio, " we have nothing prescribed about this matter in the Book of Ceremonies,1 and on this ac...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This resource provides a spiritual journey through the Three Days of the Sacred Paschal Triduum. Each chapter reflects on the Triduum from a unique perspective and includes questions for discussion as an opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the sacred mysteries of the Catholic faith. It illustrates the Triduum as the highest form of worship, ritually enacting human life and its set of relationships with God and each other. Donna Eschenauer clarifies and develops a theology of the Paschal Mystery as revealed through the rites of the Triduum, ultimately offering a foundation from which to understand all Catholic liturgy and to uncover its power to form Christian disciples.

"On this holy day, the liturgy takes us inside the Upper Room." Thus wrote Pope John Paul II in 1979 in his first Holy Thursday letter, a tradition he continued until his passing in 2005. The Upper Room is the essence of his annual letters: coming to a deeper understanding of the theology of the priesthood, instituted that first Holy Thursday almost two millennia ago. Letters to My Brother Priests will help every priest understand the theology behind his ministry. This book will help every seminarian understand the august status he pursues. This book will help every one understand why priests are so essential to every Christian’s faith and vocation within the Church.

Book excerpt: Sheer Grace shows not just the "link between" but the indissolubility of the union of theology, liturgy, and spirituality. It does so by grounding it in a radical tradition of liturgy as transformation, which has its roots in the scriptures and the lived liturgical experience of our biblical and ecclesial ancestors. At the same time the book looks to the present experience of Christians who feel a deep and largely unmet need for that same kind of transforming experience that liturgy can be. The book also looks to the future with hope as a gift of "sheer grace," as something only God can and does give, and not as something we can manufacture by our own efforts at renewal or restoration. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Paschal Triduum is the centerpiece of the Christian year, so it is fitting that a special worship book be created for this sacred time. You now hold such a volume in your hands. World Library Publications announces the publication of Christ Our Light, a complete prayer resource for the Triduum. This is the first book of its kind, created in consultation with liturgists and musicians from across the country. Christ Our Light contains all official liturgies of the great Three Days, as well as prayers for Holy Thursday Night Watch, Morning Watches for Good Friday and Holy Saturday, Stations of the Cross, Tenebrae, Blessing of Easter Foods, and Preparation Rites for the Elect. The Order of Mass and Paschal Vespers for Easter Sunday complete the Triduum liturgies, Praying from a single resource will enable your parishioners to appreciate the unity of the three-day celebration of the Paschal Triduum. Every detail has been considered in the design of Christ Our Light to make it as aesthetically pleasing as possible. Often parish-produced materials are, out of necessity, created quickly by people inexperienced in the formatting of worship aids. Here is a dignified alternative to parish-produced worship folders. Although the readings and prayers for the Triduum rarely change, musical elements vary among parishes and regions. The musical elements of Christ Our Light were chosen carefully to reflect the common Catholic repertoire. A supplement of hymns is found in the back of the book, giving parishes a wide repertoire from which to choose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of Christian history the church has given no place to Holy Saturday in its liturgy or worship. Yet the space dividing Calvary and the Garden may be the best place from which to reflect on the meaning of Christ's death and resurrection. This superb work by the late Alan Lewis develops on a grand scale and in great detail a theology of Holy Saturday. The first comprehensive theology of Holy Saturday ever written, Between Cross and Resurrectionshows that at the center of the biblical story and the church's creed lies a three-day narrative. Lewis explores the meaning of Holy Saturday -- the restless day of burial and waiting -- from the perspectives of narrative (hearing the story), doctrine (thinking the story), and ethics (living the story). Along the way he visits as many spiritual themes as possible in order to demonstrate the range of topics that take on fresh meaning when viewed from the vantage point of Holy Saturday.Between Cross and Resurrection is not only incisive and elegantly written, but it is also a uniquely moving work deeply rooted in Christian experience. While writing this book Lewis experienced his own Holy Saturday in suffering from and finally succumbing to cancer. He considered Between Cross and Resurrection to be the culmination of his life's work.
