Book excerpt: Fresh from detention that lapsed to an unprecedented declaration of martial law in the country, Ampon battles with the antagonism of a sister. She argues it is romanticism to rejoin the politically disobedient. She appears helpless. Ampon rejoins friends inspired by tales of a guerrilla leader but haunted by Japanese cruelties to set up a demo house, recruiting activists to the countryside. Th ey believe the first steps of stripping power from the Philippine ruler begin there. They conduct social surveys to see firsthand the dire conditions, risking lives to battle armed state agents amid myriad weather, rains, typhoons and snakes and making occasional strikes to supporters of the dictator. In a bid to satisfy external forces, notably American politicians and domestic bankrollers, the gung ho dictator, wades in the snap election, with moneybags for vote-buying. But the ballot power of the masses overwhelms, and the impossible happens: the housewife beats him. Her victory rivets attention of the masses, resonating all way to US Congress halls. Yet problems remained. The recalcitrant, politically disobedient, exhausted in the skirmishes, remain committed to the herculean uplift of the people. Ampon, always in the sidelines, tries to help advance the cause, keeping the torch lit for decades now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eastern waterfowlers, who know the black duck best, regard this big dusky bird as the top game bird against which all other ducks are measured. In parts of the Northeast this feeling of affection is so strong that in some circles only the black rates the name of "duck." All other species, even the famed canvasback, are "coots," "fish ducks," or are known by even less complimentary titles. Much of this devotion is justified. Without the black duck, wildfowling in much of the thickly settled East would be an unrewarding pastime. Big as a mallard, as wary as a Canada goose, and as handsome in full plumage as any duck that flies, the black duck fills a place on the American sporting scene that could be filled by no other waterfowl. Here is the dramatic story of the life of the black duck, from the time the broods hatch on the spruce-lined ponds of eastern Canada, through the hazardous flights to the southern wintering areas, to the return of the paired birds to the nesting grounds in spring. It is a story told authoritatively by a Canadian scientist whose adult life has been spent in studying the black duck from the fastnesses of its northern breeding grounds in Labrador and Ungava Bay, to the marshes of Louisiana. In this book are facts on the black and other species of waterfowl that will be new to many students of waterfowl as well as to sportsmen. Here also are recommendations for perpetuating the flights of these magnificent game birds.

Book Synopsis Aboriginal Peoples and Birds in Australia by : Philip A. Clarke
Download or read book Aboriginal Peoples and Birds in Australia written by Philip A. Clarke and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2023-04-03 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia is home to many distinctive species of birds, and Aboriginal peoples have developed close alliances with them over the millennia of their custodianship of this country. Aboriginal Peoples and Birds in Australia: Historical and Cultural Relationships provides a review of the broad physical, historical and cultural relationships that Aboriginal people have had with the Australian avifauna. This book aims to raise awareness of the alternative bodies of ornithological knowledge that reside outside of Western science. It describes the role of birds as totemic ancestors and spirit beings, and explores Aboriginal bird nomenclature, foraging techniques and the use of avian materials to make food, medicine and artefacts. Through a historical perspective, this book examines the gaps between knowledge systems of Indigenous peoples and Western science, to encourage greater collaboration and acknowledgment in the future.
