Book excerpt: In this thesis an attempt has been made to give a picture of the economic development in Bengal from 1704 to 1740 with special reference to the effect and influence of tree East India Company. The year 1704 marks the advent of Murshid Kuli Khan to the helm of affairs in Bengal for all practical purposes. The establishment at the turn of the century, of the influence of the Company in Bengal, which was strengthened by the farwan granted in 1717 by the Moghul Emperor Farrukhsiyar, brought into prominence a conflict of interests between the Company and other forces which were then dominant in the economy of Bengal. The Fort William Consultations which flow from 1704 to 1740 without a break, reinforced by the factory records and letters and despatches which passed between the Directors of the Company in London and their agents in Calcutta help us to build up the story of the impact of the East India Company on Bengal. The thesis divided into seven chapters. Chapter I gives an account of the economy of Bengal at the turn of the century. Chapter II traces the growth of the Company's influence in Bengal and its relations with the Government. Chapter III deals with the position of other European traders in Bengal specially the Ostend Company. Chapter IV seeks to explain the system of currency and show how tile increasing penetration of the Company led to u conflict of interests with the indigenous bankers and traders. Chapter V deals with markets and trade with special reference to saltpetre, silk and cotton goods. Chapter VI describes the general economic conditions, the state of art and industries and the extent of the contact of the East India Company with the people. Chapter VII draws some conclusions.

Book Synopsis Bengal Industries and the British Industrial Revolution (1757-1857) by : Indrajit Ray
Download or read book Bengal Industries and the British Industrial Revolution (1757-1857) written by Indrajit Ray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-08-09 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to enlighten two grey areas of industrial historiography. Although Bengal industries were globally dominant on the eve of the industrial revolution, no detailed literature is available about their later course of development. A series of questions are involved in it. Did those industries decline during the spells of British industrial revolution? If yes, what were their reasons? If not, the general curiosity is: On which merits could those industries survive against the odds of the technological revolution? A thorough discussion on these issues also clears up another area of dispute relating to the occurrence of deindustrialization in Bengal, and the validity of two competing hypotheses on it, viz. i) the mainstream hypothesis of market failures, and ii) the neo-marxian hypothesis of imperialistic state interventions
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of the Seven Years' War by : Trevor Burnard
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of the Seven Years' War written by Trevor Burnard and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 785 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This handbook contains 38 essays that provide up-to-date scholarship on all aspects of the globally important Seven Years' War (1756-1763). The volume carefully examines the three major areas of conflict in the war-Europe, South Asia, and the Americas-treating each theater as distinct from each other but often linked in ways that helped create a new geopolitics from the 1760s onward. Chapters trace the causes of the war in the interior of America; outline the triumphs of Britain and Prussia in fierce fighting across Europe; and explain how the British under the East India Company came to play an important role in South Asian politics and commerce. The handbook pays due attention to military conflict but does much more than this. It investigates social, cultural, and intellectual developments in a crucial period of reorientation during the mid-eighteenth century. The handbook is notably diverse in its authorship, with leading scholars on the Seven Years' War from Europe and South Asia as well as Britain and North America, providing perspectives from many areas outside an Anglo-American frame. It treats the Seven Years' War as a world-transformative event: important not only in its own right-in shaping commerce, politics, science, art, demography, religion, and gender during the conflict-but also central to the evolving history of South Asia, Europe, and the Americas in the second half of the eighteenth century"--

Book Synopsis The East India Company by : Philip Lawson
Download or read book The East India Company written by Philip Lawson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-14 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first short history of the East India Company from its founding in 1600 to its demise in 1857, designed for students and academics. The Company was central to the growth of the British Empire in India, to the development of overseas trade, and to the rise of shareholder capitalism, so this survey will be essential reading for imperial and economic historians and historians of Asia alike. It stresses the neglected early years of the Company, and its intimate relationship with (and impact upon) the domestic British scene.
Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Java's Northeast Coast, c. 1740-1800 by : Hui Kian Kwee
Download or read book The Political Economy of Java's Northeast Coast, c. 1740-1800 written by Hui Kian Kwee and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of the political economy of Java's Northeast Coast from 1743, when the VOC emerged as its ruler, until the end of the eighteenth century. The focus is on the various power-holders - namely coastal Javanese regents, Mataram rulers, Chinese merchants and Company authorities - and how they accommodated the changes brought about with the power shift, what their primary resources were and how they tried to maximize their advantages in the new politico-economic setting. This study also shows how the Company, despite being the ruler, had to compromise with these power-holders and satisfy their needs to optimize its own gains.
Book Synopsis Dutch-Asiatic Trade 1620 – 1740 by : Kristof Glamann
Download or read book Dutch-Asiatic Trade 1620 – 1740 written by Kristof Glamann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present monograph has grown out of a good many years of study of the history of the European trade to the East Indies. The starting-point actually was Danish. Having treated the history of the Danish Asiatic Company during the period 1732-1772 I went abroad in order to familiarize myself with the background to the reorganization of Danish trade about 1732. It was especially the possible connexion with the dissolved Ostend Company and the counter-measures, diplomatic as well as economic, of the Dutch, English, and French companies that interested me. Through these investigations I got acquainted with the various Northwest European company records and soon realized that the Dutch archives offered a rich material, especially as regards quantities and prices. A study on the Dutch Company's trade in Japanese copper, a subject which had previously occupied Scandinavian historians in con nexion with the question of the status of Swedish copper on the European market in the 17th century, amplified my knowledge of the archives in the Hague to such a degree that I dared to tackle the greater object of giving a description of the Company's trade as a whole during its heyday. On various points it proved to be necessary to make comparative in vestigations, especially in the English East India Company's archives in London.

Book Synopsis The East India Company, 1600-1857 by : William A. Pettigrew
Download or read book The East India Company, 1600-1857 written by William A. Pettigrew and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book employs a wide range of perspectives to demonstrate how the East India Company facilitated cross-cultural interactions between the English and various groups in South Asia between 1600 to 1857 and how these interactions transformed important features of both British and South Asian history. Rather than viewing the Company as an organization projecting its authority from London to India, the volume shows how the Company’s history and its broader historical significance can best be understood by appreciating the myriad ways in which these interactions shaped the Company’s story and altered the course of history. Bringing together the latest research and several case studies, the work includes examinations of the formulation of economic theory, the development of corporate strategy, the mechanics of state finance, the mapping of maritime jurisdiction, the government and practice of religions, domesticity, travel, diplomacy, state formation, art, gift-giving, incarceration, and rebellion. Together, the essays will advance the understanding of the peculiarly corporate features of cross-cultural engagement during a crucial early phase of globalization. Insightful and lucid, this volume will be useful to scholars and researchers of modern history, South Asian studies, economic history, and political studies.

Download or read book The Cultures of History in Early Modern India written by Kumkum Chatterjee and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-02-11 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the nature and function of history-writing in India by focusing on early modern traditions of historiography with particular reference to Bengal. Situating distinctive cultures of history vis-à-vis their relevant political and cultural contexts, it highlights the richness, variety and politically sensitive character of a range of oral and textual narratives. Kumkum Chatterjee also makes a significant contribution to the intellectual and cultural history of early modern India by exploring interactions between regional, vernacular cultures on the one hand and the Islamicate, Persianized culture of the Mughal Empire on the other. Strongly grounded in primary sources, The Cultures of History in Early Modern India re-examines the concepts of authority, evidence and method in early modern historiography. It also discusses the debates surrounding the culture of history writing in India.
