The inventory for 1829 gave 196 taxpayers; that for 1835, 231, not including in either case the nonresidents. The taxes for the first year amounted to (state, county, town, for the last year, state, county, town, total, If the increase of population and business was slight, it could be already seen that it trended towards the settlement about the Falls, which awakened feelings of jealousy and rivalry on the part of those living in other parts of the town. An attempt to repair the old meetinghouse and make of it a townhouse was voted down by those from the new vil lage in 1832. Two years later the matter again came up for consideration and was rejected, but in 1836 a vote was taken to that effect. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Records of the Town Two years ago, upon the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the incorporation of the Town, we published our first volume of Dedham Records from the Town Clerk's books of Births, Marriages, and Deaths - 1635 to 1845. The records of the various churches in town contain a large quantity of valuable material not found upon the Town Clerk's records. These church records have been open to the public, but they were scattered throughout the several parishes, were not indexed, and few people have had the time or the patience to attempt to search these books and decipher their contents. In my report to the town, upon the publication of the first volume, I called attention to the records in the several parishes, and their importance to the town, together with the fact that, in many cases, these books were kept in the private houses of their custodians, in great danger of being lost or destroyed, and that steps should be taken to enable the town to have the benefit of the important information which they contain; At the last annual meeting, the town made an appropriation to'ward printing a second volume, which should contain records from the different parishes in town, of public interest, or supplementary to the first volume. It shows how an independent, homogeneous, self-respecting community could manage its own affairs upon the good old New England plan, which has never been surpassed. The town meeting, the town officers, and back of both, the controlling town sentiment constituted a triple power which ruled supreme With all the necessary sanctions of law and safeguards of liberty. Such records, of course, do not belong to the class of literature common ly called popular. They are far removed from the range of fiction or poetry or tradition. But one who makes himself familiar with these annals will find vastly more than mere hard and dry facts. He will read between the lines, and by allowing his imagination to brood over them, he will find here ele ments of civics, economics, education, religion, domestic and social life, and even the touches of romance. In fact, the story of such a town is intensely dramatic, especially in the age of the founders. There are acts, and scenes, and Dramatic personae, and exhibitions of human passion and pride, both tragic and comic. Here are not only examples of selfishness, but of the noblest generosity and sacrifice, of personal magnanimity and courage, of steadfast loyalty and patriotism. These qualities may not appear at first sight as one opens the book.
