Download or read book Morkinskinna written by and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-11 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morkinskinna ("rotten parchment"), the first full-length chronicle of the kings of medieval Norway (1030-1157), forms the basis of the Icelandic chronicle tradition. Based ultimately on an original from ca. 1220, the single defective manuscript was written in Iceland ca. 1275. The present volume, the first translation of Morkinskinna in any language, makes this literary milestone available to a general readership, with introduction and commentary to clarify its position in the history of medieval Icelandic letters. The book is designed to be used by readers with no knowledge of Icelandic. The translation is keyed to, and may be used in conjunction with, the existing diplomatic editions. Notes on the manuscript problems, as well as introductory and appended matter, augment the text. Above all, Kari Ellen Gade's edition of the skaldic stanzas provides a substantial initial step toward a future edition of the Icelandic text: Morkinskinna is the first large-scale repository of skaldic verse. Morkinskinna also includes many semi-independent tales that recount the adventures of individual Icelanders at the Norwegian court. These tales, with their often humorous or ironic inflections, shift the focus of the chronicle from the deeds of the kings to the Icelandic perception of Norwegian royalty.

Book excerpt: John Van der Kiste's book takes in the principal monarchies of Scandinavia going back to the beginning of the 19th century. He uses unpublished sources and photographs to show how they relate to modern European history. The book also considers the political backgrounds to the monarchs' reigns; as well as examining the suspected pro-German leanings of Gustav V, the author describes the dissolution of the union between Norway and Sweden in 1905, which eventually led to the election of Christian IX's grandson as Haakon VII.
Book Synopsis The Norwegian Invasion of England in 1066 by : Kelly DeVries
Download or read book The Norwegian Invasion of England in 1066 written by Kelly DeVries and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 1999 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three weeks before the battle of Hastings, Harold defeated an invading army of Norwegians at the battle of Stamford Bridge, a victory which was to cost him dear. The events surrounding the battle are discussed in detail. This very accessible narrative...tells the story of 'the first two important battles of 1066', Fulford Gate and Stamford Bridge, and of the leaders of the opposing English and Norwegian factions. CHOICE He places the invasion in a broad context. He outlines the Anglo-Scandinavian nature of the English kingdom in the eleventh century, traces the careers of the major leaders, and devotes a chapter each to the English and Norwegian military systems. JOURNAL OF MILITARY HISTORY William the Conqueror's invasion in 1066 was not the only attack on England that year. On September 25, 1066, less than three weeks before William defeated King Harold II Godwinson at the battle of Hastings, that same Harold had been victorious over his other opponent of 1066, King Haraldr HardrĂ¡di of Norway at the battle of Stamford Bridge. It was an impressive victory, driving an invading army of Norwegians from theearldom of Northumbria; but it was to cost Harold dear. In telling the story of this neglected battle, Kelly DeVries traces the rise and fall of a family of English warlords, the Godwins, as well as that of the equally impressiveNorwegian warlord HardrĂ¡di. KELLY DEVRIES is Associate Professor, Department of History, Loyola College in Maryland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE VIKING AGE was an exciting era of conquest and adventure, full of bigger than life men who dared the raging seas in open dragon ships, their round battle shields arrayed in a menacing row signaling the brute strength of the warriors who manned the mighty ships. One of the greatest of these was the WARRIOR KING HARALD FAIRHAIR, FIRST KING OF ALL NORWAY and a superhero of the VIKING AGE. His was definitely a life of conquest and adventure. Not only did he conquer the thirty one petty kingdoms of Norway and the petty kings who had ruled them, but he also conquered the seven women who were each unique and beautiful in their own way. They would give him twenty sons and two daughters. Harald was not inherently romantic, but he did envy the look of love he saw in the eyes of his powerful father, Halvdan the Black, whenever his lovely mother Ragnhild was near. Their influence was key to the remarkable man he would become.Enter ODIN, the ALLFATHER who ruled the mortals under his charge. Would the god actually ask Harald to marry at the age of eleven, despite the stunning red-haired beauty chosen for his mate? But she was only the bait, the bait that would set the young prince on his quest to fulfill the destiny required of him by Odin in the pre-mortal world. Little did this Viking lad know that Asa would be just the first of the wives Odin would choose for him to wed. After countless successful battles and many years as the powerful ruler, Harald began to feel proud of his great accomplishments and neglected to pay homage to the god who had protected and guided the events of his life. Then came the witch. The confident king was helpless under her power and she used him as she pleased. Only after he had sired four sons while hidden in a dark, filthy cave did Odin allow him to be rescued. Some lessons are hard to learn, but those are the kind one never forgets. Fortunately for Harald, he had yet more women to love and more sons to be brought into the world. The noble blood that ran through the veins of these sons would insure the longevity of Harald's royal line. THE SEVEN WIVES OF HARALD FAIRHAIR, FIRST KING OF ALL NORWAY, tells the story of this superhero in a historical novel that realistically depicts the life and time of the VIKING AGE. It was an age when women were strong, but men were stronger. IT IS A STORY OF LOVE AND WAR, BUT MOSTLY LOVE. This is a work of fiction, based on facts as found in the HEIMSKRINGLA, A HISTORY OF THE KINGS OF NORWAY, an ancient text written in the Old Norse language. It was compiled by SNORRE STURLUSON from documents, now lost, that were recorded during the 9th to the 12th century. To shorten the lengthy novel, the historic maps and illustrations were removed for this edition, making it 354 versus 416 pages. The strong font, Copperplate Gothic, has also been replaced by the weak Times New Roman font to please those readers who had difficulty reading the font in the first edition.
