Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tea Industry Tea is so familiar a thing to us that we seldom stop to think of its origin unless we happen to be fortunate enough to visit Darjeeling, Assam, or some other district in India where it is grown and manufactured. We know that the brown liquid which we drink is made from small black leaves, but apart from that we are perhaps like the boy who, when asked where tea came from, replied, 'The shop.' But where does the shopman get his tea? To that question we shall get the answer as we read this book. Like so many of the things which supply our daily needs, tea comes from a plant, and in answering our question we shall start with the plant rather than with the shopman. This means that we must go to a tea garden where the plant is grown and to a factory where the leaves of the plant are made into tea. Ordinarily we think of a garden as a small plot of land beside our house in which we grow flowers and fruit and vegetables. In China, which is looked upon as the original home of tea, the plant has for many many years been grown in gardens somewhat like those to which we are accustomed; and this may be the reason why the word is used for great tracts of land which seem to us to be very unlike gardens in the ordinary sense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tea-Culture as a Probable American IndustryThis company, having by reckless management thrown away one million of dollars, was brought to the verge of bankruptcy. Better counsel and more economical management having prevailed, the success of the enterprise was subsequently established. The teas manufactured from the Assam plant were at first rejected by the London brokers, but more care having been given to the manipulation of the leaf, and to other processes of manufacture, the product brought higher prices than the finest Chinese teas. This gave an impulse to the new industry in Assam, which soon Spread to the Himalaya slopes and to other parts of British India.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Tea Industry in India: A Review of Finance and Labour, and a Guide for Capitalists and Assistants In reviewing my previous little work - Tea in Assam the Editor of the Calcutta daily Statesman was kind enough to characterize it as interesting. In my present endeavour I have remembered this, and have tried again to deserve such commendation. Class works are necessarily somewhat heavy in their reading and knowing this, I have sought to make the subject as entertaining as was possible. This will explain the insertion of the chapters, The Planter on Leave, and The Social Phase of Tea-drinking. There is a great deal that is not cheerful in a tea-planter's life; and I have consequently thought that a proven picture of the goal to which, I suppose, all men look - i.e. Leave of absence would perhaps act as a mental tonic to those that required one, and reconcile existing unpleasant nesses by a cheerful hope for the future. Book excerpt: A history of capitalism in nineteenth‑ and twentieth‑century China and India that explores the competition between their tea industries “Tea War is not only a detailed comparative history of the transformation of tea production in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but it also intervenes in larger debates about the nature of capitalism, global modernity, and global history.”— Alexander F. Day, Occidental College Tea remains the world’s most popular commercial drink today, and at the turn of the twentieth century, it represented the largest export industry of both China and colonial India. In analyzing the global competition between Chinese and Indian tea, Andrew B. Liu challenges past economic histories premised on the technical “divergence” between the West and the Rest, arguing instead that seemingly traditional technologies and practices were central to modern capital accumulation across Asia. He shows how competitive pressures compelled Chinese merchants to adopt abstract industrial conceptions of time, while colonial planters in India pushed for labor indenture laws to support factory-style tea plantations. Characterizations of China and India as premodern backwaters, he explains, were themselves the historical result of new notions of political economy adopted by Chinese and Indian nationalists, who discovered that these abstract ideas corresponded to concrete social changes in their local surroundings. Together, these stories point toward a more flexible and globally oriented conceptualization of the history of capitalism in China and India.
