Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Church in the Light of the Monuments: A Study in Christian Archology This series of Handbooks is designed to meet a need, which, the Editors believe, has been widely felt, and which results in great measure from the predominant importance attached to Dogmatic and Moral Theology in the studies preliminary to the Priesthood. That the first place must of necessity be given to these subjects will not be disputed. But there remains a large outlying field of professional knowledge which is always in danger of being crowded out in the years before ordination, and the practical utility of which may not be fully realised until some experience of the ministry has been gained. It will be the aim of the present series to offer the sort of help which is dictated by such experience, and its developments will be largely guided by the suggestions, past and future, of the Clergy themselves. To provide Textbooks for Dogmatic Treatises is not contemplated - at any rate not at the outset. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monuments of the Early Church This volume is designed to give a general view of the monuments of the early Church, comprising in its scope all branches of Christian art and archaeology, and treating each of them as completely as is possible within the limits of a handbook. It is designed also, in behalf of students who may wish to pursue the subject further, to provide a general introduction to the archaeology of the early Christian period. To this end it is hoped that the Bibliography will be found useful. This book deals expressly with the monumental remains of Christian antiquity, and only incidentally with the early literature which illustrates the same period and the same subjects. It gives a detailed exposition of many of the most representative monuments, especially of those which are reproduced in the accompanying illustrations. There is included only so much of a more general nature as is necessary to define the point of view from which the monuments of early Christian art must be regarded, or to summarize the historical inferences which may be drawn from them. The author has confined himself scrupulously to the well-defined and soundly assured results of this study, and has endeavored to eliminate questions of a controversial character. The period covered by this study extends from the second to the sixth century inclusive. The interest of this period to the secular student lies in the fact that it represents the last phase of Graeco-Roman art and civilization, and reveals at the same time a new artistic impulse which, after remaining dormant for centuries, was destined to germinate in another soil and appear again in the more familiar art of the Middle Ages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spectacular recent discoveries and a stream of material artifacts have heightened interest in what archaeology can tell us about early Christianity. The first of its kind, William Frend's important and engaging work tells the full story of the archaeological search for early Christianity. He shows how, despite nationalisms, religious rivalry, and personal ambition, archaeology since Napoleon's time has excavated important sites and developed scientific methods to explore them. He explains the important light archaeology sheds on the art, architecture, and social world of Christians in the Roman Empire. He shows how archaeology enriches our understanding of Jewish-Christian relations in the first centuries, and provides clues to long-ignored popular religion and non-orthodox traditions of the Donatists, Manichees, and Monophysites. And he shows how archaeology decisively corrects and modifies text-based scholarly consensus on the mission of Christianity in the Roman Empire.
