Book excerpt: A survey has been made of the literature published previously on the inelastic behavior of shells subjected to dynamic loads. An experimental investigation has also been undertaken to examine the behavior of various cylindrical shell panels which were loaded with an impulse on the inner surface. The panels were fully clamped along the two longitudinal edges and free on the other two. The initial kinetic energy of the dynamic loads was sufficiently large to cause inelastic behavior and to produce maximum permanent transverse deflections of up to nearly twice the corresponding panel thickness. Tests were conducted on mild steel and aluminum 6061 T6 panels which had various thicknesses and an included angle of 90 degrees approximately. (Author).

Book excerpt: An approximate theoretical procedure is presented which may be used to estimate the dynamic plastic response of arbitrarily shaped shells. The influence of finite-deflections is retained in the analysis, but material elasticity, strain hardening and strain rate sensitivity are disregarded. The two particular cases of a complete spherical shell which is subjected to a spherically symmetric pressure pulse and a fully clamped cylindrical shell loaded impulsively are considered in some detail. It is observed that the predictions for these two cases agree favourably with the results of more exact rigid-plastic theories. (Author).

The initial kinetic energy of the dynamic loads in these tests was considerably larger than the maximum amount of strain energy which the shells could absorb in a wholly elastic manner. It emerged that reasonable agreement was obtained for the strain rate insensitive shells examined which should provide encouragement for the further development of these approximate procedures. These topics are followed by a discussion of a few recent numerical studies on the dynamic plastic response of structures, and a brief survey of some recent experimental and theoretical investigations into the collision protection of vehicles.
