Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Duties of Men It is in the solution of this strange social enigma that we approachlshe one moral truth so admirably elucidated in the life and sufferings of Silvio Pellico. It is in this we trace the opera tions Of his comprehensive and subtle mind, - the process Of his reasoning, - and the minutest traits of his extraordinary character, all combining to a single mighty end, - the object of all his efforts and aspirations. Be it ours to supply, in some measure, the key to his beautiful and noble system, in its application no less to the political than to the moral reformationbof mankind; to apply it, in all its national and social bearings, -as a duty we feel due no less to our own countrymen at this eventful era, than to the genius and magnanimous character Of the author. He found a pulpit in a commercial paper published at Genoa, then in another at Leghorn. Both were suppressed. Three articles were written for the chief Italian review, the A niologz'a. But this was not enough for his ardent spirit. He joined the secret society of the Carbonari. It had once been the rallying-ground of enthusi astic Liberals who aimed in a vague way at independence, but it was now a declining force, and a number of unsuccess ful risings had brought discredit upon it. It offered a way of usefulness, however but Mazzini chafed under its fantastic ritual, its negative programme, its patriotism that looked to France for deliverance. He was already dreaming of a very different society. But despotic governments dislike dreamers. Mazzini was arrested, ostensibly on the charge of introducing a recruit into the ranks of the Carbonari, really, as the Governor of Genoa told his father, because he was a thoughtful young man of talent, fond of solitary walks by night. We don't like young people thinking without our knowing the subject of their thoughts. From his cell in the fortress of Savona he looked out upon the sea and sky - two symbols of the infinite and, except the Alps, the sublimest things in nature. Here, with a Bible, a Tacitus, a Byron, and a friendly greenfinch for companions, he had leisure to elaborate the plan of Young Italy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Duty: Twelve Conferences to Young Men Again, duty, it must be remembered, is quite the antithesis of pleasure or self-interest; nay, it is often in complete antagonism to both. No doubt it would be both agreeable and useful for a poor man, with a starving wife and child, to find and keep the purse of a Morgan or a Rockefeller, dropped accidentally in the street, and yet duty, plain, commonplace duty, compels him to return that purse without abstracting a single cent, even though the owner were neither to know of the loss nor would perceptibly suffer from the loss if he did. Dut'y is hard, stern unrelenting. It is pitiless and merciless to passion, pleasure, and in some respects to self-interest alike. It tells us emphatically, through the voice of conscience, to do what is right and shun what is wrong, be the consequences what they may. When duty is in question, mere calculation of gain or pleasure is irrelevant! As well weigh spirit against matter, or virtue against gold, as duty against carnal pleasure, or worldly wisdom. For duty, I repeat, means what is due, by you and me, to God and our neighbor, and that in justice we ought and must pay. However high the standard of Christian duty may be, yet what in duty we are bound to do or omit, that, with God's grace, we can both do or omit. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Man's Origin, Destiny, and Duty Basing my arguments upon facts admitted by nearly all scientists, I have striven in this little volume to establish the following propositions: - (1) That, as regards man and all sentient animals, the soul (which I simply define as that which feels) and the body are different entities. (2) That the soul will survive the body and, by successive transformations, will continually develop upwards. (3) That a psychic universe exists containing numberless ascending orders of intelligent beings above the human; though these are imperceptible to man's senses in the present stage of his development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It was surprising what old experiences remembered could do to a presumably educated, civilized man.” And Hugh Denismore, a young doctor driving his mother’s Cadillac from Los Angeles to Phoenix, is eminently educated and civilized. He is privileged, would seem to have the world at his feet, even. Then why does the sight of a few redneck teenagers disconcert him? Why is he reluctant to pick up a disheveled girl hitchhiking along the desert highway? And why is he the first person the police suspect when she is found dead in Arizona a few days later? Dorothy B. Hughes ranks with Raymond Chandler and Patricia Highsmith as a master of mid-century noir. In books like In a Lonely Place and Ride the Pink Horse she exposed a seething discontent underneath the veneer of twentieth-century prosperity. With The Expendable Man, first published in 1963, Hughes upends the conventions of the wrong-man narrative to deliver a story that engages readers even as it implicates them in the greatest of all American crimes.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Officer's Responsibility for His Men Many books have been written on the training of enlisted men of our Army, most of which have dealt with the military side only. There is another side, the influence of which is quite as important in rounding out the soldier's training to make him the ideal among the Nation's defenders. This book is sent forth as the result of the combined efforts of men of the Second Fort Sheridan Training Camp, to place in the hands of newly commissioned officers, in concrete form, a system of solving the many problems they will meet in the development and training of the newly formed regiments in the armies of the United States. It is believed that the benefits to be gained will increase in proportion to the spirit with which it is accepted and applied. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1854 edition. Excerpt: ... PREFACE. In the First Part of the "Voyage," we propose to delineate the promise, and commend the proper training of Childhood. The subject will be treated under a figurative title, "Childhood, or the 'Narrows' of Life," suggested by the relation of the channel bearing that name, and leading from the Great Metropolis of the New World to the ocean. The treatise, by its allegorical style, it is hoped, will be rendered intelligible and captivating to children; and by its just analysis and clear illustration of the promise and proper education of childhood, prove a useful manual to parents and guardians. In the Second Part of the "Voyage," we shall endeavor to point out the leading temptations and the reliable safeguards of the young, and trace the triumphs of youth in a career of virtue and piety. In the Third Part of the "Voyage," we have attempted to delineate the several classes of the duties of men, as Self-Duties, or those arising from the individual constitution of man; Domestic Duties, or those arising from the family institution; Patriotic Duties, or those arising from civil compact; Duties of Philanthropy, or those arising from the broader relations of the human brotherhood; and Duties of Religion, or those arising from the common relations of creatures to their Creator. In this part, also, are contained a dissertation upon the peculiar sphere and Duties of Woman; and three others upon the "Lights and Shades of City Life;" sketching the features of a great Metropolis, the trials of virtue amid its gay scenes, and the demoralizing influence of the stage. Though this volume has been written, amid the most pressing engagements, and not intended for so early publication, we hop
