Book excerpt: Welcome back to Hawk Island and the village of Two Brooks. After three men disappeared, Monsignor Inocente, is suspicious of the semblance of peace and quiet in his village, and with good reason. He knows his villagers, especially a group of strong-willed women called the Sacristy—defiant and mercurial, delivering their own brand of alternative justice against errant, abusive men. He tries to curb their vigilante means of attaining justice and the general willful behavior of his people, while at the same time protecting them from the implacable heavy hand of justice coming from the mainland. When a police inspector from the mainland, with wild hair and a hooded smile, arrives in Two Brooks to investigate the disappearance of the three men, the residents wonder if he will bring them more sorrow or maybe even hope. As the inspector digs deeper into the lives of the villagers, he becomes one of them. Is it a ruse to learn their secrets or did he fall prey to their ways? In the second book of the Hawk Island series, Angela, one of the Sacristy women, continues to challenge the violent subordination and unrepentant oppression of women in her village. One of her virtues is the depth of her love for people and causes; she does it completely and unabashedly, but this becomes her undoing when she faces the painful truth of loving more than one man.

Book excerpt: The year was 1970 when Misty was born. The children in our family ranged in age from sixteen down to two and a half. There were seven boys and one girl. We lived in a two-story house, with a very large yard. The back porch (or hall as we called it) was enclosed, with a window looking out over the yard. Our first and oldest child was Steve. He was sixteen. Second was Larry, who was fifteen. Third was Alan, who was fourteen. Next in line, the fourth child (and only daughter) was Annette. She was thirteen years old. Fifth in line was David, who was nine years old at the time. Sixth in line was Kelly. He was close to his seventh birthday. Seventh in line was Todd, and he was close to his sixth birthday. (Their birthdays were in April, same time we got Misty.)Then the eighth child, and youngest, was Rick. He was two and a half years old at the time. Dad worked at his job at the V. A. Hospital, and I (Mom) was a full-time homemaker The children were all close in age and we were a very close-knit family. We cared about and helped each other. We did things together. Two of the older boys, Larry and Alan, were constantly into projects. What one wouldnt think of to do, the other one would. The last, and smallest family member was a white and black cat. (He had been rescued from an animal trap) He had several names by our family. One was Pickles (because he was always being rescued) another was Puddy, some just preferred cat.He didnt care. As long as he was petted and loved and fed.

Book excerpt: "Outstanding biography . . . If you never read it, you should. It's an amazing story." --Louisiana Cookin' Leah Lange Chase was raised in a small, country town across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans. With the values instilled in her by devoted parents--hard work, faith, and family--she soon grew into a woman to be reckoned with. In her roles as chef of the most popular Creole restaurant in New Orleans, nationally respected patron of the arts, and civic leader, she has influenced the world around her in important ways. Reading her story makes one think, "If she can do it, maybe I can too." After rejecting the usual occupations for respectable Creole girls to work in a restaurant in the French Quarter, Leah married Edgar "Dooky" Chase II and began running the kitchen for her mother-in-law. After her mother-in-law's death, Leah nurtured the former po' boy shop and numbers business into a world-class restaurant. Dooky Chase's was one of a handful of restaurants in the country where African Americans could sit down to a nice meal in well-appointed surroundings. The restaurant was and still is frequented by prominent African American actors, athletes, artists, writers, and musicians. It has also always been a gathering place for local politicians and activists. Leah Chase has become a living legend for popularizing Creole cuisine, for her political activism, for her tireless work for numerous organizations, and for her extensive art collection. Through it all, she raised four children and survived the sudden loss of the daughter with whom she worked closely and a bombing during the Civil Rights era. What has borne her through it all is perhaps the most compelling aspect of this amazing woman: her faith and her family.

Book excerpt: The Child Inside is a delightful book of childhood stories and original poems, which span from the writer's childhood to her present life. It is a collection of nostalgic memories, followed by the poems that those memories inspired. The wonderful poetry and singsong style of each verse will enrapture children and keep them happy for hours. These narratives capture the imagination no matter the age of the reader, and the illustrations connect you in a special way to the places and characters these poems portray, whether they be a pair of naughty pumpkins or a little girl who lost her mittens playing in the snow. The engaging pages of this charming book carry readers from their own beds to neighborhood farms all the way to Santa's workshop. Each journey is fantastically told through recollections of youth and anecdotes, which are warm, familiar, and heartfelt. The sincere prose and exceptional verse contained within will make you want to read each one again and again.

Book excerpt: The Bradford Legacy is the story of Carter Bradford, a fabulously rich descendant of an American family of entrepreneurs with a financial empire worth billions. Carter is a seriously flawed human being suffering from destructive narcissism and is, by all standards of measurement, a sociopath. From his earliest years Carter has been manipulative and cruel but amazingly charming when the need was there. Following his grandfather, Hiram Bradford, Carter chooses a political career and sets his sights on the Presidency. As the story progresses Carter uses his wealth and political power, augmented by a willingness to commit murder, to reach his goals. In many ways Carter Bradford is an extreme example of the worst of any number of American politicians or, maybe he isn’t. Let the reader judge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book should be on every writer, would-be-writer, or reader's bookshelf. Unlike the hundreds of how-to books, Mr. Charlton leads us down a winding path to becoming a writer. Irreverent at times and solemn at others, he lays out his pratfalls of growing up but never mocks. His explanations are clear and concise. His short stories entertain but are there to draw from. This unique meandering through a writer's mind answers one of the essential questions writers answer in interviews: "How do you come up with _______?"Charlton introduces us to his formative people, explaining how he drew from each person to produce specific characters or circumstances. Consider this a cipher or companion handbook to his books. In his lectures on writing, Mr. Charlton explains writing dense or contextually rich novels that are not drudgery to read. In his mysteries, he drops clues like a flirtatious southern lady would drop her handkerchief. Even the most innocent offhanded reference should never be a throwaway line. Throwaway lines are indirectly filler or fluff. In this day of expensive printing, word count should be the last bloviated fixture in a novel. Learning to write concisely should be the goal of every writer. Charlton discusses writing to the changing word counts in journalism, or even to an exact word count for a contest. His writing exercises are merely for self-examination. He uses his family as a collection of tools and information about the varieties of family undercurrents. Ozzie and Harriet were good for thirty minutes each week in the fifties but became tediously plebian for a novel-especially in a mystery or thriller. Better to substitute Ozzy Osbourne for the paternal role. Once he shows his youth lessons, Mr. Charlton interjects some of his favorite short stories. These are the stories he uses as lessons, building characters real enough for them to snatch the storytelling from the writer and reveal the story, which is only theirs to tell. Characters, storytelling, novels, or movies will never be the same again. As Charlton loves to point out-not all mysteries are murders, and not all murders are mysteries.
