Book excerpt: 'Dry Store Room No. 1' is an intimate biography of the Natural History Museum, celebrating the eccentric personalities who have peopled it and capturing the wonders of scientific endeavour, academic rigour and imagination. 'This book is a kind of museum of the mind. It is my own collection, a personal archive, designed to explain what goes on behind the polished doors in the Natural History Museum. The lustre of a museum does not depend only on the artefacts or objects it contains - the people who work out of sight are what keeps a museum alive...I want to bring those invisible people into the sunlight.' Behind the public façade of any great museum there lies a secret domain: one of unseen galleries, locked doors, priceless specimens and hidden lives. Through the stories of the numerous eccentric individuals whose long careers have left their mark on the study of evolutionary science, Richard Fortey, former senior paleaontologist at London's Natural History Museum, celebrates the pioneering work of the Museum from its inception to the present day. He delves into the feuds, affairs, scandals and skulduggery that have punctuated its long history, and formed a backdrop to extraordinary scientific endeavour. He explores the staying power and adaptability of the Museum as it responds to changes wrought by advances in technology and molecular biology - 'spare' bones from an extinct giant bird suddenly become cutting-edge science with the new knowledge that DNA can be extracted from them, and ancient fish are tested with the latest equipment that is able to measure rises in pollution. 'Dry Store Room No. 1' is a fascinating and affectionate account of a hidden world of untold treasures, where every fragment tells a story about time past, by a scientist who combines rigorous professional learning with a gift for prose that sparkles with wit and literary sensibility.

Book excerpt: This book explains the current and traditional fish smoking and drying practices in terms of the basic underlying principles of biochemistry and food technology. Readers will soon become aware of the discrepancies between the basic scientific knowledge and modern technology on one hand, and the traditional processes described in some chapters. This book bridges that gap. The emphasis in this book in on the critical factors which affect the quality of products produced in less technological cultures-products which have been largely neglected in technically advanced countries-and on developments and innovations which have occurred in the last five years. The critical factors affecting the quality of fish products in technically advanced countries have been summarized. The answers to questions on the quality of smoked, cured and dried fish can be found from an understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological factors influencing the functionality of the product at every stage of its preparation and subsequent handling from the time the fish is harvested to the time it is eaten.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 2 does what it says on the can - it continues from where the first volume left off. It looks at the bloody years of 1978 and 1979. It covers eyewitness accounts from soldiers on the ground and there is the occasional comment from civilians who were living in the troubled province at the time. There are accounts from the IRA atrocity at the la Mon Restaurant when the terrorists used a napalm-like device to incinerate 12 innocent civilians; it includes the murder of Lord Mountbatten, hero of Burma, and some of his family and staff on his yacht in Co Sligo. It also covers the worst tragedy for the Army in Ulster, the murder of 18 soldiers at Warrenpoint. Every single troubles-related death and every major incident is covered and includes those soldiers who died in 'non-battle' incidents, the ones who are not included in the 'official' figures. The book pulls no punches and the author is outspoken in his criticism of the Irish-American community and their incredibly na•ve support of the Republican terrorists who almost destroyed an entire country. The author condemns in equal measure the paramilitaries of both sides and considers the evil activities of Lenny Murphy and the 'Shankill Butchers' as bad as anything which the Provisional IRA or INLA did. The book looks at individual incidents and tries to examine the terrorist mindset and their motives for the atrocities which they carried out in the name of their communities. It supports the security forces unequivocally but renders criticism where appropriate. The book examines the role of the young soldiers from Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, indeed from every part of the UK from which these young men came. It looks at foot patrols, riot control and the daily fear and threat under which they operated for their four month or two year tours. Read carefully the words of an Irish-American who clearly is contemptuous of the way her fellow Americans almost sleepwalked into supporting the IRA from afar with the dollars which they placed so willingly into the NORAID collection jars. The level of detail and research the author goes into is phenomenal and demonstrates his commitment to continue telling the story of one of Britain's forgotten wars.

Book excerpt: We have all heard stories where somebody heard somebody say that they did such and such and the story seems so outlandish it can't be true. Well here is a lifetime spent living some of those stories. The reader will be transported 600 miles out in the Atlantic Ocean and experience the horror of realising that the helicopter, your only means of getting back to your ship, has just inexplicably flown off over the horizon leaving you floating in a pond where you are now considered food. Or trying to cut your way out of a fishing net that is pressing you down onto the unforgiving shell of a 2000lb WW2 German bomb in visibility that is so bad you can't tell the difference between dark and light, up or down or even which way the surface of the water is. Climbing down a cliff to recover a hand grenade from under a dead body that has been lying on top of it for 3 months. Then moving a bomb across a building site that is so sensitive spirit levels had to be taped to the top of it to keep it level so it won't detonate, while only 30m away the UK firework championship contenders have laid out over 80 tons of fireworks in preparation for a three day display. Only three hours before this task began he was dealing with a hand grenade in a shop that was full of gas after the resident had torn the gas metre off the wall because of a dispute with his landlord. This is the stuff films are made of only films like this would clearly have to be put in the fiction genre, surely people don't do this kind of thing for real? Mark D Holroyd has spent 24 years as a Clearance Diver in the British Royal Navy. His stories are a reflection on a life spent in situations most people would find hard to comprehend, from a diving course where at least 60% of those attempting the course are expected to fail. To escaping from sunken helicopters in complete darkness, this is life on the edge as part of a small elite group of men who make up this secretive part of the Royal Navy. When things get bad and the situation is dire humour is sometimes all that keeps men sane.
