Book excerpt: The account of one of the smallest soldiers in blue George Ulmer, the author of this book, is unusually distinguishable from many of the soldiers who penned their recollections of their time in the Union Army during the great civil war between the states. Ulmer was no strapping youth straight from the farm, or mature man fighting for deeply held convictions; by his own admission, as war broke out he was 'a midget of a boy; a barefooted ragged news-boy in the city of New York' where he made much needed money by selling newspapers after proclaiming contents they did not possess. Ulmer's mother died in 1861 and his father moved the family to a farm in Maine to provide them with a healthier lifestyle. As the war progressed, Ulmer's brother joined the army to fight and he too burned to go. His attempts to be mustered into a regiment were repeatedly met with rejection and derisive laughter. However, Ulmer though both very young and small was also a street-wise urchin from the city who knew how to get his own way and eventually, in 1863 he found himself in the ranks of the 8th Maine wearing the smallest uniform that could be issued to him-it 'looked as if it was enough make a suit for an entire family.' He became something of a mascot to the 'Maine giants' of his regiment and the diminutive Ulmer had a fair degree of leeway in his movements becoming a champion forager-something for which his background had ideally qualified him. Of course this remains the account of a fighting soldier and Ulmer found himself in action at Fort Powhatan, Cold Harbor and Petersburg. This is an enjoyable, charming and often humorous recollection, candidly told in manhood by someone who remembered himself as a canny but mischievous 'young devil.' Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fought amid rocks and trees, in thick blinding smoke, and under exceedingly stressful conditions, the battle for the southern slope of Little Round Top on July 2, 1863 stands among the most famous and crucial military actions in American history, one of the key engagements that led to the North's victory at Gettysburg. In this powerfully narrated history, Maine historian Tom Desjardin tells the story of the 20th Maine Regiment, the soldiers who fought and won the battle of Little Round Top. This engaging work is the culmination of years of detailed research on the experiences of the soldiers in that regiment, telling the complete story of the unit in the Gettysburg Campaign, from June 21 through July 10, 1863. Desjardin uses more than seventy first-hand accounts to tell the story of this campaign in critical detail. He brings the personal experiences of the soldiers to life, relating the story from both sides and revealing the actions and feelings of the men from Alabama who tried, in vain, to seize Little Round Top. Indeed, ranging from the lowest ranking private to the highest officers, this book explores the terrible experiences of war and their tragic effect. Following the regiment through the campaign enables readers to understand fully the soldiers' feelings towards the enemy, towards citizens of both North and South, and towards the commanders of the two armies. In addition, this book traces the development of the legend of Gettysburg, as veterans of the fight struggle to remember, grasp, and memorialize their part in the largest battle ever fought on the continent. With a new preface and updated maps and illustrations, Stand Firm Ye Boys of Maine offers a compelling account of one of the most crucial small engagements of the Civil War.

Book Synopsis The Beat of My Own Drum by : Sheila E.
Download or read book The Beat of My Own Drum written by Sheila E. and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Grammy-nominated singer, drummer, and percussionist who is world renowned for her contributions throughout the music industry, a moving memoir about the healing power of music and spiritual growth inspired by five decades of life and love on the stage. She was born Sheila Escovedo in 1957, but the world knows her as Sheila E. She first picked up the drumsticks and started making music at the precocious age of three, taught by her legendary father, percussionist Pete Escovedo. As the goddaughter of Tito Puente, music was the heartbeat of her family, and despite Sheila's impoverished childhood in Oakland, California, her family stayed strong, inspired by the music they played nightly in their living room. When she was only five, Sheila delivered her first solo performance to a live audience. By nineteen, she had fallen in love with Carlos Santana. By twenty-one, she met Prince at one of her concerts. Sheila E. and Prince would eventually join forces and collaborate for more than two decades, creating hits that catapulted Sheila to her own pop superstardom. The Beat of My Own Drum is both a walk through four decades of Latin and pop music—from her tours with Marvin Gaye, Lionel Richie, Prince, and Ringo Starr to her own solo career. At the same time, it’s also a heartbreaking, ultimately redemptive look at how the sanctity of music can save a person’s life. Having repeatedly endured sexual abuse as a child, Sheila credits her parents, music, and God with giving her the will to carry on and to build a lasting legacy. Rich in musical detail, pop, and Latin music history, this is a fascinating walk through some of the biggest moments in music from the ’70s and ’80s. But as Sheila’s personal story, this memoir is a unique glimpse into a world-famous drummer’s singular life—a treat for both new and longtime fans of Sheila E. And above all, The Beat of My Own Drum is a testament to how the positive power of music has fueled Sheila’s heart and soul—and how it can transform your life as well.
