In a series of thirty-five long poems, the masterful French writer here rejects the "real" world, and immerses the reader in a series of images taken from ancient mythology and fantasy. Christian Souchon has rendered his brother's verse into a marvelous series of images, presented on flanking pages in their outstanding French originals along with marvelously evocative English-language translations. Illustrated throughout. MICHEL GALIANA (1933-1999) wrote novels, poetry, essays, and criticism. His brother, Christian Souchon, is a translator with the international organization, OECD.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jenny George’s debut showcases an astonishing poetic talent, a new voice that is intensely focused, patient, and empathic. The Dream of Reason explores the paradoxical relationships between humans and the animals we imagine, keep, fear, and consume. Titled after Goya’s grotesque bestiary, George’s own dreamscape is populated by purring moths, bats that crawl like goblins, and livestock—especially pigs, whose spirit and slaughter inform a central series of portraits. The poems invite moments of stark realism into a spacious, lucid realm just outside of time—finding revelation in stillness, intimacy in violence, and vision in language that lifts from the dark. From “Threshold Gods”: I saw a bat in a dream and then later that week I saw a real bat, crawling on its elbows across the porch like a goblin. It was early evening. I want to ask about death. But first I want to ask about flying. Jenny George lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she runs a foundation for Buddhist-based social justice. She holds an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.

Book excerpt: Richly allusive, the poems in Brigit Pegeen Kelly’s The Orchard evoke elements of myth in distinctive aural and rhythmic patterns. Her poetic strength lies in her ability to cast poems as modern myths and allegories. Propelled by patterned repetitions and lush cadences, the poems move the reader through a landscape where waking and dream consciousness fuse. Brigit Pegeen Kelly teaches creative writing at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her poetry collections are Song (BOA Editions), the 1994 Lamont Poetry Selection of The Academy of American Poets and a finalist for the 1995 Los Angeles Times Book Award, and To the Place of Trumpets, selected by James Merrill for the 1987 Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize.

Book excerpt: It's 1977 and troubled thirteen year-old Joe Shepard has been banished by his parents to spend the summer out at his Great-Uncle Amil's ranch. the two of them will bond quickly over stories of baseball's glorious past. But when the heat of the summer days drive his uncle indoors, Joe's restlessness will spark his sense of adventure. His explorations will take him beyond the borders of the ranch--leading to a ghoulish discovery amongst the fence posts of the neighboring farm to the east. and then there is Emily--the beautiful and enigmatic girl he befriends. Her dress, her mannerism--look so out of place in the middle of a dusty apple orchard. Joe will discover why their friendship is truly unique, and in doing so, realize that the similarities between he and his uncle are many. Erik Jacobsen weaves an intricate story of intersecting subplots and fascinating characters spanning almost 90 years. the Apple Orchard is a lyrical tale of the continual struggle of good versus evil, of death and betrayal, and the loss of innocence. It is about the seemingly little insignificant choices made every day--how action, as well as inaction, can bring the gravest of consequences.

Book excerpt: A charming second-chance romance about a big city chef whose return home to help run her family's wedding planning business means reuniting with the man who broke her heart. Chef Aurora Shipley spent years slicing, dicing, and chopping her way up the ladder of L.A.'s competitive restaurant scene, but when her sisters needed her help, she dropped everything to return home to Texas. With her family’s Orchard Inn now on its feet, it's time for Aurora to head back to the big city. At least there, she won’t keep running into ex-boyfriend Jude Jones or her high school bully Erica, who now needs Aurora and her wedding planning business to throw the celebration of her dreams. Will Aurora let the past go long enough to send the bride off without a hitch and ignore her traitorous heart urging her to stay and try again with Jude? As a teenager, Jude Jones foolishly listened to his father and let Aurora Shipley slip away. In the intervening years, the sweet, shy girl grew into a stunning, capable, confident woman, and her reappearance is messing with Jude's focus, which should be on expanding Jones' Family Herbs. He broke Aurora's heart once, and she broke his, too. This time will Jude be strong enough to fight for her—for them—and a future together?

It is 1987 and Hargeisa waits. Whispers of revolution travel on the dry winds, but still the dictatorship remains secure. Soon, through the eyes of three women, we will see Somalia fall. Nine-year-old Deqo has left the vast refugee camp where she was born, lured to the city by the promise of her first pair of shoes. Kawsar, a solitary widow, is trapped in her little house with its garden clawed from the desert, confined to her bed after a savage beating in the local police station. Filsan, a young female soldier, has moved from Mogadishu to suppress the rebellion growing in the north. As the country is unraveled by a civil war that will shock the world, the fates of these three women are twisted irrevocably together. Nadifa Mohamed was born in Hargeisa and was exiled before the outbreak of war. In The Orchard of Lost Souls, she returns to Hargeisa in her imagination. Intimate, frank, brimming with beauty and fierce love, this novel is an unforgettable account of ordinary lives lived in extraordinary times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analytical views in this book are not in any way serendipity; rather, they were well thought-out and structured as simply received. Thus arises the need to initiatively look back at the epoch of our existence on Earth as preceded by the following: survival of the fittest, search for food, where to live, sacrifices and rituals to appeal to God, brutalism against one another, religious sect formation, and deforestation due to uncontrollable population increase. Improvisation of wooden houses, trees of concrete, iron, and steel have been initiated, but, in a way, they have continually caused global warming to increase very much, at a gradual pace, as civilization advances through Machine Age/mechanized farming, industrialization, and technological advancements, space exploration, and globalization of industries and corporate organizations. The heat increases at an unusual, unprecedented level due to greenhouse gas emission and thus the assumed greenhouse releases a light-weight carbon dioxide (CO2) gas into the atmosphere, which is speculated to have formed impenetrable blanket. The presence of CO2 is an indicator, pointing to a fact that this gas in question had been released in the past and is presently being discharged uncontrollably. More so, there seems to be no end in sight as the CO2 continues to be sporadically expunged into the atmosphere. The process described above has continued to be expanding through all frontiers with no end in sight, where new neighborhoods are being built, Suburbs margining together as new Castles are evolving block by block, and concrete plazas are enveloping the Earth; so are the vegetative forest of trees are disappearing, causing global warming to increase exponentially. The increase becomes very much intense at an alarming rate in that it has now been considered to be adversely effective when found to be dangerously impacting the essence and every facet of life. Analytical research is hereby required to be conducted by the world’s best researchers and scientists in their respective professional fields. Necessary wisdom of advice has to be forwarded by religious leaders of all known, notable, reliable religious groups or denominations. Leaders and heads of governments of all Nations that control every facet of life, in every part of the globe, must guide and monitor, purposely to do proper checks and balances with intuition, ideology, predictions, and prophecies contained in this book. The Land & the Orchard of Human Species This is to determine the level of damages caused by humanity, thereby putting the Earth’s conditions into a scale of ratio prior to civilization, and, as civilization progresses, i.e., the condition of the Earth from time immemorial as the scientists and archaeologists can determine through lists of records and documentaries. Precisely, from premedieval periods to present days and age, while projecting into the future of the planet Earth in order for us to be just and find peace among ourselves and on Earth. If humanity cannot find peace on Earth, then, we cannot find peace elsewhere because human’s trait is like a shadow that trails behind you when you take a walk in the light. Source of all lives and the means of energy and growth.

Book excerpt: “With impeccable research and flawless prose, Chevalier perfectly conjures the grandeur of the pristine Wild West . . . and the everyday adventurers—male and female—who were bold enough or foolish enough to be drawn to the unknown. She crafts for us an excellent experience.” —USA Today From internationally bestselling author Tracy Chevalier, author of A Single Thread, comes a riveting drama of a pioneer family on the American frontier 1838: James and Sadie Goodenough have settled where their wagon got stuck – in the muddy, stagnant swamps of northwest Ohio. They and their five children work relentlessly to tame their patch of land, buying saplings from a local tree man known as John Appleseed so they can cultivate the fifty apple trees required to stake their claim on the property. But the orchard they plant sows the seeds of a long battle. James loves the apples, reminders of an easier life back in Connecticut; while Sadie prefers the applejack they make, an alcoholic refuge from brutal frontier life. 1853: Their youngest child Robert is wandering through Gold Rush California. Restless and haunted by the broken family he left behind, he has made his way alone across the country. In the redwood and giant sequoia groves he finds some solace, collecting seeds for a naturalist who sells plants from the new world to the gardeners of England. But you can run only so far, even in America, and when Robert’s past makes an unexpected appearance he must decide whether to strike out again or stake his own claim to a home at last. Chevalier tells a fierce, beautifully crafted story in At the Edge of the Orchard, her most graceful and richly imagined work yet.

The poems are surreal, resonant, and full of unexpected connections, like dreams themselves, and, in fact, like poetry itself. Bibiana's original dreams are included in a special section. Some of the Dreams, as well as some of the Inexplicaciones, are in Spanish. If you want to know what your dreams "mean", this is a good place to start figuring them out! Includes some reinexplicaciones of Bennett's poems by Ivan Argüelles.
