Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Method of Teaching That I came to the conclusion that there was a great need of a radical change. So little was there of initiative or originality on the part of the children themselves, that I felt sure nothing short of a surgical operation - a com plete cutting away of old habits and the formation of a new school tradition - would meet the case. The first aid which I invoked was nature study, mainly from its aesthetic standpoint and from the verv first I realized that, to be Of any value, it must be nature real/y sfua'z'ea' by t/ze c/zz'la' flimsdf. It must not be nature filtered through pic torial illustration, textbook, dried specimen, and scientific terms, finally dribbled into passive children's minds minus the joy of assimilation; but it must be the real study of living and working nature, absorbed in the open air under conditions which allow for free movement under natural discipline. And Since nature is the storehouse from which poet and artist draw their inspiration, it naturally follows that we found it but a short step from the study of the open book of nature into the Elysian fields of literature and the arts. Nature study then became the basis of every possible lesson; and the school nature gardens and na ture rambles supplied subject matter for lessons In Singing, reading, writing, arithmetic, drawing, painting, recitation, composition, grammar, and much of the geography. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dramatic Technique The contents of this book were originally brought together from notes for the classroom as eight lectures delivered be fore the Lowell Institute, Boston, in the winter of 1913. They were carefully reworked for later lectures before audiences in Brooklyn and Philadelphia. Indeed, both in and out of the classroom they have been slowly revised in the intervening five years. Detailed consideration Of the one-act play has been reserved for later Special treatment. Otherwise the book attempts to treat helpfully the many problems which the would-be dramatist must face in learning the funda mentals of a very difficult but fascinating art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dramatization: Selection From English Classics Adapted in Dramatic Form It is the aim of this volume to give practical suggestions for the dramatization of high school classics. The teaching experience of the authors leads them to believe that dramatization of the literature studied is one of the most successful of all devices for vitalizing the work of the English class. Moreover, the imagined difficulties in the way of high school dramatization vanish entirely on nearer view or become, in the working out, a stimulus to invention. The selections here treated are familiar to students in the secondary schools. The dramatic illustrations offered are type studies and are intended as a working basis for teachers and pupils in developing similar exercises. To facilitate their use in the classroom, they are grouped, according to the usual high school English course, in four parts, one for each year respectively; and are published independently in pamphlet form expressly for the convenience of pupils. This grouping is necessarily somewhat arbitrary. Most of the selections may be used in any year, irrespective of their place in the series of pamphlets. Their purpose is to instruct, the idea of amusement and entertainment, from the nature of the case, being wholly incidental. This book is sent to high school teachers with the earnest hope that it may point the way to making the regular, not the holiday, dramatization of literature an effective instrument in the teaching of English. Let us turn literature into life for the pupil and we shall give him an amulet, at whose magic touch new worlds arc opened, - we shall give him in deed and in truth "that old enchanted Arabian grain, the Sesame, which opens doors; - doors, not of robbers', but of Kings' Treasuries." Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of the Drama: Its Philosophy and Teaching; With a Chapter on the Law of Copyright in Its Relation to Dramatic Work HE remarkable progress which has, within the last half-century, been made in all branches of the drama is a subject which will well repay close and criti cal examination. There has never existed any depart ment of art so closely allied to Nature and her varying conditions of existence as that of the drama, in its connection with the actor's art, and with the analysis of the passions and emotions of the human soul. Know ledge concerning the development of this subject, to be gleaned at all, must be gleaned partly through the pages of dramatic literature, and partly through our personal contact with the theatre. And knowledge of this kind is distinctly valuable, because it embraces much of the hidden mechanism by which the mind is regulated and affected. The extensive metaphysical elaborations which have, from time to time, occupied the genius of speen lative enquiry, have been the means of placing before the student of psychology the intricate operations of the mind, as its workings have been reduced to a science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Instinct in Education Many of the subjects treated under the chap ter headings were then far less in the public eye. Six years ago only the first of the playground congresses had been held; story-tellers' leagues and clubs in town and city were exceptions rather than the rule; dancing was utilized far less than at present, in schools and other institu tions; and pageantry, in its modern form, was not yet introduced into this country. Also, con ditions affecting public amusements were less subject to scientific investigation. The delay in publishing has, howeve'r, had its advantages. The subjects have now become matters of popu lar knowledge and interest. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Drama: Its Law and Its Technique Of Freytag's illustrations from modern drama, many are based on German plays, and are thus less illuminating to the average American reader even the college student than to the German audience for whom they were intended; hence they greatly increase the bulk of the book without adding pro portionately to its effectiveness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dramatic Stories for Reading and Acting Learning to read is more than learning to recognize and pronounce printed words. Reading in a listless manner is a dull and unprofitable exercise. In teaching children to read, the good primary teacher seeks, therefore, by furnishing an incentive through interesting material, and by stimulating intelligent and reasoned activity, to prevent discouragement and to banish ennui. Hence the value of selections that are dramatic in quality, and, to some extent, dramatic in form; for they encourage the children to read as if they were participants in the action of the story. Such material satisfies the child's love of action, stimulates his imagination, and, by keeping his faculties alert, helps him to read with understanding and with intelligent inflection. Thus the gap between the spoken language of his daily life and the printed language of the page is bridged over, and reading becomes to him a real way of acquiring and conveying ideas. Like many other good modern ideas in education, the dramatic work in the schools has often been carried to a ridiculous excess. Dramatization presupposes a certain emphasis, a certain heightening of effects. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. How can teachers transform classroom teaching and learning by making pedagogy more socially and culturally responsive, more relevant to students’ lives, and more collaborative? How can they engage disaffected students in learning and at the same time promote deep understanding though high-quality teaching that goes beyond test preparation? This text for prospective and practicing teachers introduces engaging, innovative pedagogy for putting active and dramatic approaches to learning and teaching into action. Written in an accessible, conversational, and refreshingly honest style by a teacher and professor with over 30 years' experience, it features real examples of preschool, elementary, middle, and high school teachers working in actual classrooms in diverse settings. Their tales explore not only how, but also why, they have changed the way they teach. Photographs and stories of their classroom practice, along with summarizing charts of principles and strategies, both illuminate the critical, cross-curricular, and inquiry-based conceptual framework Edmiston develops and provide rich examples and straightforward guidelines that can support readers as they experiment with using active and dramatic approaches to dialogue, inquiry, building community, planning for exploration, and authentic assessment in their own classrooms.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dramatic Festival: A Consideration of the Lyrical Method as a Factor in Preparatory Education Such are the facts which explain the continually increasing burden which the school is called upon to carry - all those fads and frills against which our utilitarians have been crying out. What these objectors to our miscellaneous curriculum overlook is that these things are veritably the bread of life for the child, quite as necessary as all the proficiencies for which they clamour; be cause without them the powers of life, of emotion and imagination and all the leisure accomplish ments which are essential to the development of manhood and womanhood, must perish. The prob lem is a much larger one and a more profoundly serious one than these critics of our modernised schools realise.
