Book Synopsis The Drama of Kings by : Robert Williams Buchanan
Download or read book The Drama of Kings written by Robert Williams Buchanan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Drama of Kings by Robert Williams Buchanan is an ambitious effort to transform real events into dramatic form. It is trilogy that defines the conflict between France and Germany in a manner similar to Greek dramas. Buchanan opens with a dedication to the father of positivism, Auguste Comte, and immediately sets the tone for what is to come with hard hitting verse that could be compared to a thunderous prologue of a Greek tragedy. The dedication is followed by the poem which is not directly linked to the play but showcases the versatility and prowess of Buchanan as a poet and dramatist. The Drama of Kings set to events defining early nineteenth century Europe, consists of three parts and each one is dedicated to a particular scene. It takes the reader through the turmoil of the Congress of Powers and Napoleon Bonaparte and moves on to Bismarck of Germany and his ascension to power with the defeat of Paris. In developing each of the characters of this title, Buchanan aligns them to a higher, sublime form which overrides the flaws of each individual. The play is filled with chorus of divine agencies, as Buchanan calls them. The Drama of Kings is quite an accomplishment as it adopts the mystic realism style of writing to which the author dedicates an entire chapter at the end of the play. Buchanan's interpretation of Bismarck is worth a mention as he stands out as one of the strongest characters in this play. It is the brilliance with which Buchanan meshes reality and mysticism which becomes the essence of this title. For that reason alone, this work is of great value to students of literature, apart from appealing to the general reader on its own merits as well. Book Synopsis Verse Drama in England, 1900-2015 by : Irene Morra
Download or read book Verse Drama in England, 1900-2015 written by Irene Morra and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-10-20 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Verse Drama in England, 1900-2015 provides a critical and historical exploration of a tradition of modern dramatic creativity that has received very little scholarly attention. Exploring the emergence of a distinctly modern verse drama at the turn of the century and its development into the twenty-first, it counters common assumptions that the form is a marginal, fundamentally outdated curiosity. Through an examination of the extensive and diverse engagement of literary and theatrical writers, directors and musicians, Irene Morra identifies in modern verse drama a consistent and often prominent attempt to expand upon, revitalize, and redefine the contemporary English stage. Dramatists discussed include Stephen Phillips, Gordon Bottomley, John Masefield, James Elroy Flecker, T. S. Eliot, W. H. Auden, Ronald Duncan, Christopher Fry, John Arden, Anne Ridler, Tony Harrison, Steven Berkoff, Caryl Churchill, and Mike Bartlett. The book explores the negotiation of these dramatists with the changing position of verse drama in relation to constructions of national and communal audience, aesthetic challenge, and dramatic heritage. Key to the study is the self-conscious positioning of many of these dramatists in relation to an assumed mainstream tradition – and the various critical responses that that positioning has provoked. The study advocates for a scholarly revaluation of what must be identified as an influential and overlooked tradition of aesthetic challenge and creativity.
