Book excerpt: From the snake in the Garden of Eden to the lost sheep in Luke’s parable, stories about fish and birds, rams and goats abound. We read about them, but they have no voice of their own. Here we allow the raven and the dove on Noah’s ark, the big fish that swallowed Jonah, and the donkey on which Balaam rode, to be the narrators of their own stories, to inform us and help us to re-imagine our stories. We learn something about the intrinsic value of all living beings, and something about ourselves.

Book excerpt: From the bestselling author of Born to Run, a heartwarming story about training a rescue donkey to run one of the most challenging races in America, and, in the process, discovering the life-changing power of the human-animal connection. "A delight, full of heart and hijinks and humor." —John Grogan, author of Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World's Worst Dog When Christopher McDougall decided to adopt a donkey in dire straits, he had no idea what he was getting himself into. But with the help of his neighbors, Chris came up with a crazy idea. Burro racing, a unique type of competition in which humans and donkeys run side by side over mountains and through streams, would be exactly the challenge Sherman and Chris needed. In the course of Sherman’s training, Chris would enlist Amish running clubs, high-spirited goats, the service animal community, and two Sarah Palin–loving long-distance female truckers. Sherman’s heartwarming story of overcoming all odds to run one of the most unbelievable races in America shows the healing power of movement and the strength of the human-animal connection. Look for Christopher McDougall's new book, Born to Run 2, coming in December!

But rumor had it that only the best of all living creatures were to be taken aboard the Ark with Noah. In Why Noah Chose the Dove, a fresh and lively approach to the age-old account, Isaac Bashevis Singer sets down the dialogue of the animals as they vie with one another for a place on the Ark.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Donkey's Journey chronicles the author's life and path to understanding his purpose according to God's will. Although the author had accomplished many things, such as being a Marine Corps veteran from operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and a deputy sheriff and special victims detective, he still felt worthless and was frustrated with the meaning of life. The author takes us on a journey with his bouts with worthlessness and struggles as he relates his life to that of a donkey. The author allows us to feel his pain when acknowledging his failures as a husband which led to the ultimate failure of his marriage. His undiagnosed mental health issues contributed to severe suicidal thoughts. This is of course until the day he turned his entire life over to God, and he asked God to give him a greater purpose for his life. We go on the journey with him as he faces spiritual battles along the way. His purpose in life begins to be identified as his spirit life grows stronger. The purpose of the book is to reach those that are battling some form of struggle in their life, to leave a feeling of worthlessness and find a life of purpose. The key to breaking the chains of bondage from all sorts of issues is to completely turn our lives over to Jesus Christ. He is not only the key to eternal life, he is the key to abundant life.

"The demon of speed is often associated with forgetting, with avoidance . . . and slowness with memory and confronting," observes Milan Kundera in his novel Slowness. With that purpose in mind-a search for slowness and tranquility, Andy Merrifield sets out on a journey of the soul with a friend's donkey, Gribouille, to walk amid the ruins and spectacular vistas of southern France's Haute-Auvergne. As Merrifield contemplates literature, science, truth, and beauty amid the French countryside, Gribouille surprises him with his subtle wisdom, reminding him time and again that enlightenment is all around us if we but seek it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other nonhuman source has served as the basis for more metaphors than animals. Speaking of Animals is a dictionary of animal metaphors that are current in American English. It is comprehensive, historical, and metaphor-based. Each entry refers to the other dictionaries that catalog that same metaphor, and the dates of first appearance in writing are supplied, where possible, for both the metaphor and the name of the source. The main text is organized alphabetically by metaphor rather than by animal or animal behavior; all the metaphors are classified according to their animal source in a list at the end of the book. An animal metaphor is a word, phrase, or sentence that expresses a resemblance or similarity between someone or something and a particular animal or animal class. True metaphors are single words, such as the noun tiger, the verb hog, and the adjective chicken. Phrasal metaphors combine true metaphors with other words, such as blind tiger, hog the road, and chicken colonel. Other animal metaphors take the form of similes, such as like rats leaving a sinking ship and prickly as a hedgehog. Still others take the form of proverbs, such as Don't count your chickens before they hatch and Let sleeping dogs lie. The horse is the animal most frequently referred to in metaphors, followed closely by the dog. The Bible is the most prolific literary source of animal metaphors, followed closely by Shakespeare.
