Book Synopsis Hidden Challenges to Education Systems in Transition Economies by : Sue E. Berryman
Download or read book Hidden Challenges to Education Systems in Transition Economies written by Sue E. Berryman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides diagnostic and strategic analysis of the challenges to educational systems in the transition economies of the Eastern and Central Europe and Central Asia. At the outset of the transition many of these countries educational systems had solved problems such as limited access, gender inequalities, and poor quality outputs that still plague other regions of the world. Many policy makers believed that education was not a problem sector in transition countries. This report presents originally unforeseen results which suggest that deep and broad problems are emerging in the sector and were threatening many countries' achievements in education. The region's education systems which once were a good fit with the planned economies and authoritarian political systems are proving to be a poor fit with market economies and more open political systems. Inequities in learning opportunities are increasing at a time when human capital is becoming ever more important in the region's recovery and development. The danger is that in some countries of the region these education problems, left unchecked, could threaten to create a vicious circle that will make poverty and social exclusion a powerful generational inheritance.
Book Synopsis The Knowledge Economy and Lifelong Learning by : D.W. Livingstone
Download or read book The Knowledge Economy and Lifelong Learning written by D.W. Livingstone and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-07 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents some of the most trenchant critical analyses of the widespread claims for the recent emergence of a knowledge economy and the attendant need for greater lifelong learning. The book contains two sections: first, general critiques of the limits of current notions of a knowledge economy and required adult learning, in terms of historical comparisons, socio-political construction and current empirical evidence; secondly, specific challenges to presumed relations between work requirements and learning through case studies in diverse current workplaces that document richer learning processes than knowledge economy advocates intimate. Many of the leading authors in the field are represented. There are no other books to date that both critically assess the limits of the notion of the knowledge economy and examine closely the relation of workplace restructuring to lifelong learning beyond the confines of formal higher education and related educational policies. This reader provides a distinctive overview for future studies of relations between work and learning in contemporary societies beyond caricatures of the knowledge economy. The book should be of interest to students following undergraduate or postgraduate courses in most social sciences and education, business and labour studies departments, as well as to policy makers and the general public concerned about economic change and lifelong learning issues. D. W. Livingstone is Canada Research Chair in Lifelong Learning and Work and Professor Emeritus at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. David Guile is Professor of Education and Work at the Institute of Education, University of London.

Book Synopsis The Education Gospel by : W. Norton Grubb
Download or read book The Education Gospel written by W. Norton Grubb and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-01 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this hard-hitting history of "the gospel of education," W. Norton Grubb and Marvin Lazerson reveal the allure, and the fallacy, of the longstanding American faith that more schooling for more people is the remedy for all our social and economic problems--and that the central purpose of education is workplace preparation. But do increasing levels of education accurately represent the demands of today's jobs? Grubb and Lazerson argue that the abilities developed in schools and universities and the competencies required in work are often mismatched--since many Americans are under-educated for serious work while at least a third are over-educated for the jobs they hold. The ongoing race for personal advancement and the focus on worker preparation have squeezed out civic education and learning for its own sake. Paradoxically, the focus on schooling as a mechanism of equity has reinforced social inequality. The challenge now, the authors show, is to create environments for learning that incorporate both economic and civic goals, and to prevent the further descent of education into a preoccupation with narrow work skills and empty credentials.

Book Synopsis The School-to-Work Movement by : William J. Stull
Download or read book The School-to-Work Movement written by William J. Stull and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The School-to-Work movement came together as a major national force for educational reform in the late 1980s and reached its peak in 1994 with the passage of the School-to-Work Opportunities Act. Throughout the 1990s, the movement had a substantial record of creativity and accomplishment. Among other things, it hastened the spread of career development activities for all students, strengthened ties between schools and local employers, and supported the creation of many innovative work-based education programs. By the end of the decade, however, the influence of the movement had begun to decline as other reform movements came to dominate the national educational landscape. The book documents the successes and failures of the STW movement during this dramatic decade and assesses the movement's prospects for the future. The book's chapters are written by the nation's top scholars in the STW field and focus on all aspects of the STW movement. Among the topics covered are STW implementation and participation, career academies, education and employment effects of STW participation, the role of STW programming in the new economy, the college for all movement, and STW pedagogy.

Book Synopsis Bringing Learning to Life by : David C.A. Bradshaw
Download or read book Bringing Learning to Life written by David C.A. Bradshaw and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an age of intense economic competition and continual change, the ability to learn is a key factor in survival and prosperity. This book examines the changing interaction of the world economy, Britain’s prospects for prosperity, the connections between different kinds of work and the learning that support them. Focusing on specific areas where changed attitudes and ways of working are long overdue, the authors show the need for a better balance between formal provision in schools, colleges and within employment, and less tangible informal learning at home and in the workplace. These, in turn, open up issues of the curriculum (especially in the formative later years in schools and colleges), guidance for education and work and the qualifications structure.
