Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject American Studies - Culture and Applied Geography, grade: 1, University of Constance (Language Institute), course: Cultural Studies: North America, language: English, abstract: The Doors, who were recently honoured to be the most famous band of the USA, are now selling more records per year than during their whole career with vocalist Jim Morrison1. Almost everything about this band is legendary: their singer, the electric poet Morrison, their all styles of music including sound, the rise and fall of the band and their entry into the Hall of Fame2. In order to analyse The Doors one must consider the historical and political events, which had a deep impact on the social changes of the 60s. At a time when the world was threatened to lose control, the college students who were the main audience for rock music wanted musicians and performers who also threatened to go out of control3 and that was what The Doors did at that time. Furthermore one has to take a close look on their music, lyrics, image and live performance. The late 60s were the era of mass movement. There was a need among young people for the intimacy of the listening experience, public events, such as the Monterey Pop Festival, the Human Be-Ins in San Franzisco and Woodstock4 took place during this period. The Doors were the first of the new era of Rock ’n’ Roll who brought theatrical quality to music and knew about the power of entertainment. They represented one possible form of the merging between high culture and popular culture. They were so successful, that they were the first American rock band to produce eight consecutive gold albums. What were the reasons for the success of The Doors during the 60s, why have they influenced so many bands and why are they still so successful? 1 Moddemann, p. 7 2 Ibid., p. 9 3 Curtis, p. 215 4 Ibid., p. 130

Book excerpt: Welcome to another in the Legends of Rock & Roll series. This is, like the others, a mini-biography of one the greatest of American bands, The Doors. The Doors were one of most intense and radical rock groups of the Sixties and their legacy can still be felt today, 40 years after the death of Jim Morrison. Their career was short, only about 6 years, but they fit a lifetime of music into those 6 years. This was the Sixties, the generation that gave us LSD, hippies, protests of the Vietnam War, flower children, and free love. Jim Morrison and the Doors wrote and sang about all of that. They were as interesting to watch on stage as they were to listen to. This book is about the group, but even more importantly, it's about the music. This series is my way of honoring the people that have brought so much joy to our lives over the years. It is an unauthorized fan tribute.Inside you'll find: Introduction - Remarks about The Doors in general and a kick-off for the book.In the Beginning - A brief biography of each of the four members of the Doors and how they came together.Birth of the Doors - The beginning of the band. Do you know how they got their name? The London Fog - Their first job prior to moving up to the big time and getting a record contract. The First Album: "The Doors" - This album contains their signature song "Light My Fire", their first number one.The Ed Sullivan Show - In the late Sixties, no one stood up to Ed Sullivan. Find out why."Waiting for the Sun" - The Doors third album is their only album to reach number one.Jim Morrison Begins to Self-Destruct - The drinking and the drugs were finally catching with with Jim.Meltdown in Miami - Jim Morrison is arrested again. Did he really do what they said he did?"Morrison Hotel" - Jim's life continued to spin out of control. He is arrested again and their fifth album is released."L.A. Woman" - The last album Jim Morrison actively participated in also contains some of the group's best work.Paris - What really happened the night Jim Morrison died? The 27 Club - Do you know how many performers and writers have died during their 27th year? After Jim Morrison - The band tries to move on without Jim, but finds they can't really do it."An American Prayer" - the last Doors album is recorded using old recordings of Jim reciting his poetry, Taking It Up to the Present - Various events that have happened between the late Seventies and today.Legacy of The Doors - Every Legends book has a Legacy section where we review the awards and contributions of the artist.Afterword - My closing thoughtsSelected Discography - A list of the major works by The Doors.

Book excerpt: As the lead singer of the Doors, Jim Morrison’s searing poetic vision and voracious appetite for sexual, spiritual, and psychedelic experience inflamed the spirit and psyche of a generation. Since his mysterious death in 1971, millions more fans from a new generation have embraced his legacy, as layers of myth have gathered to enshroud the life, career, and true character of the man who was James Douglas Morrison. In Jim Morrison, critically acclaimed journalist Stephen Davis, author of Hammer of the Gods, unmasks Morrison’s constructed personas of the Lizard King and Mr. Mojo Risin’ to reveal a man of fierce intelligence whose own destructive tendencies both fueled his creative ambitions and brought about his downfall. Gathered from dozens of original interviews and investigations of Morrison’s personal journals, Davis has assembled a vivid portrait of a misunderstood genius, tracing the arc of Morrison’s life from his troubled youth to his international stardom, when his drug and alcohol binges, tumultuous sexual affairs, and fractious personal relationships reached a frenzied peak. For the first time, Davis is able to reconstruct Morrison’s last days in Paris to solve one of the greatest mysteries in music history in a shocking final chapter. Compelling and harrowing, intimate and revelatory, Jim Morrison is the definitive biography of the rock idol in snakeskin and leather who defined the 1960s.

Book excerpt: (Book). It has been over 40 years since the untimely death of L.A.'s mystic and rock's Dionysus, Jim Morrison, yet the Doors have consistently inspired new generations of fans worldwide ever since. Highlighting one of the most influential, original, and outrageous American bands of the 1960s, The Doors FAQ is a dynamic, unorthodox exploration of this remarkable band and its enigmatic lead singer. Drawing upon unique sources, Rich Weidman digs deep and serves up fresh perspective on the music, from the garage to the hits to the outtakes; and on the band's members, from their roots, influences, and key industry partners to their rare talents, personal foibles, love affairs, and arrests. This volume also details every studio album and live recording, all the highs and lows of the Doors in concert (including the notorious 1969 Miami concert), Morrison's 40-day trial, and the death of the "Lizard King" in Paris in 1971, as well as post-Morrison milestones. Unlike the straightforward narratives of other Doors biographies, this inventive, ceremonious biographical collage leaves no stone unturned, covering the band both with Morrison and post-Morrison, including the 2010 When You're Strange documentary and the recent pardon of Morrison by the State of Florida for the Miami concert. Countless rare images from album art to ticket stubs to posters accompany the text, in this dazzling edition of solid rock scholarship.

Seven years in the writing, this definitive biography is the work of two men whose empathy and experience with Jim Morrison uniquely prepared them to recount this modern tragedy: Jerry Hopkins, whose famous Presley biography, Elvis, was inspired by Morrison's suggestion, and Danny Sugerman, confidant of and aide to the Doors. With an afterword by Michael McClure.

Book excerpt: From one of rock's greatest writers, Love Becomes a Funeral Pyre is the definitive biography of the Doors Spanning the entire history of the band, from the birth of its members to the deaths of those who have departed, this book will long remain the definitive history of a band that changed the history of popular music. The band that started out as the "American Rolling Stones," noted for their wildly unpredictable performances, their jazzy vibe, and the crazed monologues of their front man, ended as badly as did the '60s: abruptly, bloodily, cripplingly. Along with evoking the cultural milieu of Los Angeles in the era, bestselling writer Mick Wall captures the true spirit of that tarnished age. From the release of their classic first album, The Doors, to their last with Jim Morrison, L.A. Woman, this band biography is a brilliantly penetrating and contemporary investigation into the real story of the Doors.

Book excerpt: In his tell-all, legendary Doors guitarist, Robby Krieger, one of Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time," opens up about his band's meteoric career, his own darkest moments, and the most famous black eye in rock 'n' roll. Few bands are as shrouded in the murky haze of rock mythology as The Doors, and parsing fact from fiction has been a virtually impossible task. But now, after fifty years, The Doors' notoriously quiet guitarist is finally breaking his silence to set the record straight. Through a series of vignettes, Robby Krieger takes readers back to where it all happened: the pawn shop where he bought his first guitar; the jail cell he was tossed into after a teenage drug bust; his parents' living room where his first songwriting sessions with Jim Morrison took place; the empty bars and backyard parties where The Doors played their first awkward gigs; the studios where their iconic songs were recorded; and the many concert venues that erupted into historic riots. Set the Night on Fire is packed with never-before-told stories from The Doors' most vital years, and offers a fresh perspective on the most infamous moments of the band's career. Krieger also goes into heartbreaking detail about his life's most difficult struggles, ranging from drug addiction to cancer, but he balances out the sorrow with humorous anecdotes about run-ins with unstable fans, famous musicians, and one really angry monk. Set the Night on Fire is at once an insightful time capsule of the '60s counterculture, a moving reflection on what it means to find oneself as a musician, and a touching tale of a life lived non-traditionally. It's not only a must-read for Doors fans, but an essential volume of American pop culture history.

Book excerpt: Jim Morrison and the Doors wield an unquestionable influence on popular music and the mainstream, but behind the rock'n'roll myths and the monstrous creation the band called Jimbo, there were four young men in search of something mightier. Led by Jim Morrison's intellectual capacity and thirst for discovery, the band explored its dark themes from a distinctly prophetic and Western perspective: spirituality, drugs, political, environmental and social concerns all played a role - it was the '60s after all. But while Beat poetry, William Blake and Arthur Rimbaud swirled in Morrison's mind, and the band laid down tracks that followed jazz, classical and Far East patterns, they more often than not landed at the center of the blues. Lured by its nighttime rhythm, its cinematic storytelling abilities and inescapable American history, the band resisted, but Jim's connections to its rhyme schemes and emotional depths won out in the end: The blues is at once The Doors' known and secret influence - among others explored here - and Morrison was haunted by them. Chased by the stealthy demon alcohol until the end, and horrified by a past and future all too real to him, this telling of the Doors often-told story makes new connections with the subconscious tidal wave that carried Morrison from Gulf Coast Florida to California gold.

Book excerpt: Thirty-five years after his death in Paris at age twenty-seven, Jim Morrison's iconic legend remains as powerful as ever, swathed in the mists of mystery. There have been numerous biographies about the self-proclaimed "Lizard King's" life and career. But none have examined his roots and childhood, the intellectual foundations of his music, his wild days with the Doors, and his enigmatic early death as completely and insightfully as Break On Through. More than simply a fascinating look at a rock legend whose cult following never stops growing, here is the definitive Morrison biography: his angry relationship with his father; the early tragedies and terrible events responsible for the darkness of his artistic vision; his private life and legal trials, including his infamous Miami obscenity bust; and the truth about his final hours. Based on extensive research and featuring dozens of rarely published photographs, this is the authoritative portrait of the poet, the grim visionary, the haunted man, and his haunting music.
