Book excerpt: Challenging previous studies that claim anxiety and antagonism between transatlantic Victorian authors, Jennifer Cognard-Black uncovers a model of reciprocal influence among three of the most popular women writers of the era. Combining analyses of personal correspondence and print culture with close readings of key narratives, this study presents an original history of transatlantic authorship that examines how these writers invented a collaborative aesthetics both within and against the dominant discourse of professionalism.

Book excerpt: Transatlantic Footholds: Turn-of-the-Century American Women Writers and British Reviewers analyses British reviews of American women fiction writers, essayists and poets between the periods of literary domesticity and modernism. The book demonstrates that a variety of American women writers were intelligently read in Britain during this era. British reviewers read American women as literary artists, as women and as Americans. While their notion of who counted as "women" was too limited by race and class, they eagerly read these writers for insight about how women around the world were entering debates on women’s place, the class struggle, religion, Indian policy, childrearing, and high society. In the process, by reading American women in varied ways, reviewers became hybrid and dissenting readers. The taste among British reviewers for American women’s books helped change the predominant direction that high culture flowed across the Atlantic from east-to-west to west-to-east. Britons working in London or far afield were deeply invested in the idea of "America." "America," their responses prove, is a transnational construct.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique interdisciplinary essay collection offers a fresh perspective on the active involvement of American women authors in the nineteenth-century transatlantic world. Internationally diverse contributors explore topics ranging from women's social and political mobility to their authorship and activism. While a number of essays focus on such well-known writers as Margaret Fuller, Catharine Maria Sedgwick, Harriet Beecher Stowe, George Eliot, Louisa May Alcott, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman, other, perhaps lesser-known authors are also included, such as E. D. E. N. Southworth, Elizabeth Stuart Phelps, Elizabeth Peabody, Jeannette Hart, and Laura Richards. These essays show the spectrum of interests and activities in which nineteenth-century women were involved as they moved, geographically and metaphorically, toward gaining their independence and the right to control their lives. Traveling far and wide - to Italy, France, Great Britain, and the Bahamas - these writers came into contact with realities far different from their own. On topics ranging from homeopathy and literary endeavors to politics and revolution, they conversed with others, reaching and inspiring transnational audiences with their words and deeds, and creating a space for self-expression in the rapidly changing transatlantic world.

Our particular prayer is already provided for; that is, God is already doing that which is required to supply what we desire. Therefore, God will not have to do something special to answer our special request. He is already and eternally doing everything; but we must do something special to secure what God has already provided for us.FROM THE BOOK

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have always prided myself on having a good memory but suddenly I looked in the mirror and saw a woman with white hair. Who was she? She looked familiar, but was she someone I knew? Internally, I am still this nubile creature anxiously awaiting another day, another adventure and every person a puzzle. Did I have all the adventures? Did I solve all the puzzles? Did I have a memory lapse? Did I move to another dimension? When did I get older? When did I grow up? Am I really wiser and mellower? I dont think so. All the people I have known and met have seen my face and that is where Ive been. The reflection of how others perceived me is the image I have of myself. There have been a variety of faces over the years but I seem to remember only the smiling, happy ones. I must have an erase mode that wipes out all the negative images I received. I feel the same as I did, ten, twenty, thirty years ago or I think I do. There is always, not necessarily a fire in my belly, but certainly there are an abundant number of embers that with a little fanning begins to glow. There is still the mischievous five year old, the sober twelve year old, and the earnest twenty-one and on it goes, but who is that woman I now see in the mirror. I guess I will just have to get in touch with my inner child and tell it You dont have to act your age but try to be considerate of that woman in the mirror. It could turn out to be you.

There she falls into character and enjoys the romance of a bygone era. Soon, though, she discovers that the hotel—including the carriage house she lives in—is haunted by a mischievous ghost and threatened by the earth spirit that calls the valley home. Desperate to make things work, Katie forges ahead with her work and meets a wonderful cast of characters from around the hotel, including an enigmatic young man who seems pulled from another time. Their romance blossoms despite some strange occurrences, but soon Katie discovers that not everything is as it seems—or seemed—in the idyllic mountain town. She is forced to make a terrible decision, one whose effects could send ripples through time itself.
