Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Smith and his family have traveled from their home in South Scalia to seek medical care for his sister. It's supposed to make everything better. What they discover is that their new home in North Scalia holds danger and the deepest kind of intolerance. It starts when Thomas is only seven. His younger sister, Grace, gets a simple cough. In impoverished South Scalia, advanced medical care is scarce, and Grace's cough soon turns into a deadly infection. There is no help for her in South Scalia. Grace's only hope lies across the desert in prosperous North Scalia. Thomas's parents know that they have to do everything they can for their daughter. Surely the inhabitants of North Scalia will not deny a four-year-old girl medical care. With the help of their beloved donkey, Grandma Jan, the Smiths set off across the desert. Their church and community have given all they can to help the Smiths on their quest. Will it be enough? The Smith family's experiences have eerie similarities to the current political climate in the United States. Daniel Washle's cautionary fable reveals the ugly underside of a society that claims to be free and just.

Download or read book Dragon in Chains written by Daniel Fox and published by Del Rey. This book was released on 2009-01-27 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From award-winning author Daniel Fox comes a ravishingly written epic of revolution and romance set in a world where magic is found in stone and in water, in dragons and in men–and in the chains that bind them. Deposed by a vicious usurper, a young emperor flees with his court to the small island of Taishu. There, with a dwindling army, a manipulative mother, and a resentful population–and his only friend a local fishergirl he takes as a concubine–he prepares for his last stand. In the mountains of Taishu, a young miner finds a huge piece of jade, the potent mineral whose ingestion can gift the emperor with superhuman attributes. Setting out to deliver the stone to the embattled emperor, Yu Shan finds himself changing into something more than human, something forbidden. Meanwhile, a great dragon lies beneath the strait that separates Taishu from the mainland, bound by chains that must be constantly renewed by the magic of a community of monks. When the monks are slaughtered by a willful pirate captain, a maimed slave assumes the terrible burden of keeping the dragon subdued. If he should fail, if she should rise free, the result will be slaughter on an unimaginable scale. Now the prisoner beneath the sea and the men and women above it will shatter old bonds of loyalty and love and forge a common destiny from the ruins of an empire.
Book Synopsis Donkeys in the Biblical World by : Kenneth C. Way
Download or read book Donkeys in the Biblical World written by Kenneth C. Way and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Kenneth Way explores the role of donkeys in the symbolism and ceremonies of the biblical world. His study stands alone in providing a comprehensive examination of donkeys in ancient Near Eastern texts, the archaeological record, and the Hebrew Bible. Way demonstrates that donkeys held a distinct status in the beliefs and rituals of the ancient Near East and especially Canaan-Israel. The focus on ceremony and symbol encompasses social and religious thoughts and practices that are reflected in ancient texts and material culture relating to the donkey. Ceremonial considerations include matters of sacrifice, treaty ratification, consumption, death, burial, “scapegoat” rituals, and foundation deposits; symbolic considerations include matters of characterization, association, function, behavior, and iconographic depiction. However, the distinction between ceremony and symbol is not strict. In many cases, these two categories are symbiotic. The need for this study on donkeys is very apparent in the disciplines that study the biblical world. There is not a single monograph or article that treats this subject comprehensively. Philologists have discussed the meaning of the Amorite phrase “to kill a jackass,” and archaeologists have discussed the phenomenon of equid burials. But until now, neither philologists nor archaeologists have attempted to pull together all the ceremonial and symbolic data on donkeys from burials, ancient Near Eastern texts, and the Hebrew Bible. Way’s study fills this void.

Book excerpt: "You are as stubborn as a donkey!" It is a phrase nearly everyone has heard or said at one time or another, and probably for good reason. However, that reason may not be exactly correct. Despite their reputation, donkeys actually have many virtuous qualities. In The Donkey Factor, Kevin P. Horath takes an in-depth look at an important yet often overlooked animal in the Bible-the donkey. Through Scripture, stories, humor, and practical examples, Kevin teaches valuable lessons from this amazing animal, including the following: - How to be a better messenger of God's Word - Why it is necessary to tame selfish desires - How to understand God's plan of redemption - The importance of leading children to Christ Used as a stand-alone adult devotional or in conjunction with his children's book, Daniel and the Donkey Factor, this book is sure to forever change the way you look at donkeys-and yourself.
